ATTRIBUTED TO ZHANG XIONG (1803–1886), WANG LI (1813–1879), ZHU CHENG (1826–1900), AND OTHER ARTISTS Flowers of an Elegant Gathering China, Qing dynasty, late 19th century, circa 1876 A collaborative hanging scroll, ink and color on paper, depicting an abundant gathering of flowering plants, blossoms and grasses extending across the composition in delicately modulated washes of ink and color. Numerous individual passages are inscribed and sealed by their respective contributors, together with an extensive poetic inscription at the upper right. Likely associated with a loosely connected group of painters around Shanghai. Among the signatures and seals are inscriptions apparently reading 子祥 (Zixiang), the well-documented sobriquet of Zhang Xiong 張熊 (1803–1886); 秋言 (Qiuyan), associated with Wang Li 王禮 (1813–1879); and 胥山樵叟 (Xushan Qiaosou), a documented sobriquet of Zhu Cheng 朱偁 (1826–1900), also known as Zhu Menglu 朱夢廬. Two additional inscriptions present intriguing possible identifications. One, provisionally read as 松泉 (Songquan), may correspond to Jin Zhen 金鎮 (1820–1883), a flower painter documented as a pupil of Zhang Xiong. Another appears to read 雪汀 (Xueting) and may correspond to Wang Weiqi 王偉棨 (Qing dynasty, dates unknown), a Jiaxing-area painter and seal carver known by the courtesy name Xueting. Additional passages bear signatures, sobriquets and seals presently read as including Taogu 桃古, Xiaochi 小池, Chujiang 初江, Xiashan 霞山, and others. Mounted as a hanging scroll within patterned silk brocade borders. Housed in a period box.
