Lot: 88 - Richard Wagner ALS 1869 Framed Music Related
A hand written letter, signed, by Richard Wagner (1813-1883). Purchased in 1984 from Robert Tollett for $2700. Translation follows (from supplied translation...) "Dear Herr Kapellmeister (*) I would have liked it very much if, right at the performance of the "Meistersinger" in Dessau, my presence had been acknowledged with some sort of consideration by the management of the Duke's theatre. Unfortunately, your kind assurances and explanations about the exceptional enthusiasm with which my work was undertaken there, are coming a bit too late. But even now I thank you sincerely, although I felt that your kind words were a subtle glossing over of the fact that the offer for (F) "Rienzi" was kept as small as possible. It would be nice if the German Theatre directors didn't always start their efforts to save money at the expense of the authors whose works they want to feature. The French fortunately have no such inclinations and they survive too! I am not sure now what the amount of the payment for the "Flying Dutchman" will be but I hope that the exalted management will find the wherewithall to pay me 20 Louis d'or, the same amount given to me for the so very successful "Meistersinger". In any case, I do not intend to fight over this with your director, since he made me very happy with his corageous and sensitive understanding of my "Meistersinger". Because of this I trist I will receive a favorable decision. Respectfully yours, Richard Wagner. Luzern, Aug. 23, 1869. " (*)Literally "Orchestra Master- a polite form of address for which "Conductor" is inadequate. There is no English equivalent (translator). (F) "The Flying Dutchman" (I meant to say).
