Cass Treating with Indians can be observed and accounts for the focus of the viewer's attention while a smaller subsidiary vignette depicting a running buck may be observed along the left margin in a vertical garlanded arrangement. This piece further predates the tenure of Oliver Cowdery as President who helped bring the Bank of Monroe under the influence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the late 1830s. We previously sold an example of this very same design in 2016 for $1,645. PMG comments "Minor Repair."

These Remainders represent the scrip issued by the company which did not run afoul of New Jersey law prohibiting the use of currency unrecognized by the state. Some staining can be observed on the 12 1/2 Cents & $2 Obsoletes. It would also appear that someone attempted to falsely issue the 12 1/2 Cents Obsolete based on what appears to be a serial number and signature in the Secretary's panel.

Ranked among the most iconic of issues by Bowers and Sundman in their book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes, the so-called "Bison" has long been a staple of collector want lists. This example presented here is preserved in a state of preservation that comes tantalizingly close to being uncirculated. Radiant with originality and eye appeal; each element of this design is perceptible and readily apparent in a manner that is often lost upon most circulated examples. A bold crimson overprint serves to focus the attention of the viewer and brings attention to the centermost vignette engraved by M.S. Baldwin Knight depicting a dynamic forward-facing American bison. Indeed a great representative of this iconic and long-lived design that will certainly scratch an itch that has befallen many collectors seeking an example for themselves.

Lot: 92230 - Fr. 224. 1896 $1 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.

An iconic note that stands among the upper echelons of the pantheon of American paper money, this remarkably well preserved example radiates with a brilliance often unseen among comparably graded notes. Featuring a scene entitled History Instructing Youth, History is seen instructing Youth on the finer points of the Constitution while seated upon an unadorned marble plinth overlooking the Potomac River from the perspective of the Lee Mansion in Arlington. The cityscape of Washington D.C. can be observed in the background with the Washington Monument and the United States Capitol Building assuming prominent positions alongside the old Bureau of Engraving & Printing Building which currently houses offices associated with the United States Forest Service. Accomplished and executed in a level of detail that is seemingly impossible to reconcile with the human hand, the engraved elements that compose this iconic design are drawn from a variety of ink tones that lend a sense of dramatic realism to the scene at hand. In contrast, the back which features separate portraits of George and Martha Washington feels reminiscent of previous issues on account of the multi-hued green inks and the familiar portraits of two American icons engraved and laid out in an ornate and excessive manner consistent of the period that adapts previous works done by Gilbert Stuart and an unknown artist. Truly a great example of this iconic design type that will undoubtedly bear witness to spirted bidding from interested parties.

Lot: 92541 - Fr. 2067-B. 1969 $20 Federal Reserve Note. New York. Extremely Fine. Missing Seal Error.

A very interesting item by any measure. This $20 Federal Reserve Note from the New York district lacks the Treasury seal at right which prompted this note to be handed over as contraband to the Secret Service in 1971. The original contraband receipt along with a letter from the Treasury Department dated January 3, 1972 is further included. The letter from the Treasury Department reads: "Reference is made to your letter dated December 17, 1971, requesting the return of one genuine $20 Federal Reserve Note devoid of U.S. Treasury Seal. The subject note is attached. Sincerely, Robert J. Newbrand Special Agent in Charge." I would wager this note was turned over by an employee as a "counterfeit" which in turn caught the attention of one of her superiors who likely wished to keep as a souvenir for numismatic reasons. The agent listed on the receipt was further caught on one of the White House Tapes as part of Conversation 535-011 as listed by the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.
