A Hand Colored Copper Engraving from Hortus Eystettensis by Basilius Besler (German, 1561 - 1629). Folio sheet of unwatermarked laid paper with Latin text visible on verso. Pencil initial top left. Double matted & gilt framed. Mat opening: H: 18 x W: 14 1/2 in. H: 25 1/4 W: 20 5/8 in. Basilius Besler, Hortus Eystettensis [The Garden of Eichstätt] Published Nuremberg: 1613 (1st ed.), 1640 (2nd ed.), 1713 [- c. 1750] (3rd ed.). This was the first great European folio of botanical prints commissioned by Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (c. 1561-1612), Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt, to chronicle his garden through the four seasons, with most of the plants depicted actual size. This garden, which encircled the Episcopal residence, was one of the first of its kind, an inclusive display of shrubs and flowering plants, mostly European, but with some then exotic species from Asia, Africa and the Americas. Basil Besler, a pharmacist and botanist, was retained as an artist to record the glories of the garden. Besler worked over a 16-year period, on site or from specimens. A team of at least six engravers faithfully translated Besler’s drawings to copperplates. A Betsy Ross 13 Star Flag, by Rachel Albright Inscribed and Dated 1904. Hand-sewn Silk ribbon flag with 13 hand embroidered stars in canton; inscribed as follows on hoist: First Flag made 1777 by Betsy Ross. This copy of the original Flag made in Oct. 1904 by Rachel Albright aged 92 years. Grand-daughter of Betsy Ross. Mounted in glazed gilded frame. The story goes that Betsy Ross's Granddaughter, Rachel Wilson Albright began making little flags for tourists in the East Wing of Independence Hall in Philadelphia possibly around the centennial of 1876 but certainly by the end of the 19th century. Her daughter Mary Catherine and niece Sarah Wilson joined in the making of flags. An Unusual Antique Brass & Glass Microscope, A brass and glass rectangular-shaped antique microscope designed for the preparation of exhibition materials or pictographic slides designed to be viewed under magnification. The cabinet, sealed by a hinged door, allows for remote manipulation and arrangement of microscopic objects. The slide is protected from air currents and dust during the construction process. Microscope features an ocular stationed at the top and two inset cutaways at either side of the top wall which allow for one to view the stage, which can be moved left and right via a mechanism at one side or tilted via a lever at the other side.
