For the honor and glory of England and in praise of her valiant sailors Hakluyt wrote his great work. Says John Masefiled in his introduction, 'His Principal Navigations is our English epic.'"Â
Lot: 73 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #4 Amaryllis
Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ) Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print. This modern re-print was created in the 1980's. 11" X 14". Redoute is unquestionably the best-known botanical illustrator of any era. The decorative appeal of his original engravings led to their modern reproduction, which in turn popularized Redoute's work in a way unique among botanical artists. Born into a family of artists in what is now Belgium, Redoute's talent was recognized & encouraged from an early age. Eventually, Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens & empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to the Empress Josephine & her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty works on natural history & archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redoute, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redoute provided. Â

He was converted to Christianity and became a Missionary Baptist. He started touring as an activist speaker in 1884, covering 20 states by 1892. Much of his lecturing put forward the case for Indian rights and laid out just causes for complaint, as one North Carolina newspaper put it in a headline, summarizing hundreds of broken treaties, incursions by settlers into Indian lands, forcible displacement by the army, and the practices of corrupt Indian agents. He was able to make his case even more appealing to his audiences by demonstrating these wrongs impeded some tribes from gaining the benefits of civilization and Christianity and were thus a challenge to the country's boasted civilization, philanthropy, Christianity and missionary zeal. Mounted on gray card stock, this image bears no photographer imprint and may have been something sold at his lecture appearances. 32ct Natural Mexican Fire Opal gemstone carving, focal pendant, in the form of a drilled face, mask. 29x29mm. 6mm thick. 6.3 grams weight. Queretaro is the center of opal mining and cutting in Mexico. Mexican opal has been known since the latter part of the 18th century, but the more familiar gem quality material has been available to the world market only since the end of the last century. At times, the beauty of Mexican opal exceeds that found in opal from any of the worldâs better-known deposits, such as Australia. The most important opal deposits in Mexico are in the state of Queretaro, although there are other significant deposits in the states of Chihuahua. Queretaro opal is often distinguished from other opal by its unusually high degree of transparency and by its particularly vivid red and green play of color. Although the cabochon is the most common cutting style, the transparency of the Queretaro material occasionally allows it to be faceted, a cutting style not generally considered for opal. A reddish orange body color is most commonly seen in fine opals from this area (responsible for the term fire opal), with predominantly green play of color that may be in broad spangles, small flecks, or even pin fire.

That city was home to many Quaker families and an active station on the Underground Railroad, providing the paper with more subscribers. James Barnaby was the publisher of the paper and received support from the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society, such as Abby Kelley. This allowed the paper to continue to be in circulation for 18 years and was shipped to other states, including Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin. The paper stated its goal in the first issue: "Our mission is a great and glorious one. It is to preach deliverance to the captive, and the opening of the prison door to them that are bound; to hasten in the day when 'liberty shall be proclaimed throughout all the land, unto all inhabitants thereof." In 1858, it featured the first publication of Frances Harper's abolitionist poem "Bury Me in a Free Land". Later, the paper expanded its mission from anti-slavery topics to include advocacy for the Women's Right Movement. It ran letters and speeches such as Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" Â

Lot: 301 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #89 Oranger a fruits deprimes (Oranges)

Photos courtesy of the New York State Museum. "There have been recorded in North America eight hundred distinct species of wild birds, and four hundred additional subspecies, or climatic varieties. This refers to the territory lying north of the Rio Grande. "When the present work on Birds of America was projected, we felt that the time was at last ripe for a new book on the subject that should be a final repository of all the vast treasure of scattered information. What was clearly needed, was to make a thorough canvass of the field and produce a work at once popular and scientific, and at the same time comprehensive -- a record of our wild birds. The official check list of the American Ornithologists' Union has been followed for classification. We have tried, in a word, to present a complete picture and story of our feathered wild bird life." ..T. Gilbert Pearson, President of the National Assoc. of Audubon Societies.

Lot: 403 - After Redoute, Floral Print, #35 Clove, Carnation, Christmas Rose
Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ) Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print. This modern re-print was created in the 1980's. 11" X 14". Comes with mat & backboard ready to frame.

Lot: 434 - Prehistoric Ocean Predator Fossil Display
Prehistoric ocean predator teeth, fangs museum display. Three fossil teeth include: - Enchodus fang -2" specimen - Mosasaur tooth, 3" specimen - Megalodon Shark tooth, 1 3/4" specimen  - 3 1/2" X 7" museum display case Enchodus is an extinct genus of Actinopterygii-ray-finned fish. It flourished during the Upper Cretaceous, surviving the CretaceousâPaleogene extinction event and persisted at least into the Eocene. Enchodus species were small to medium in size. One of the genus' most notable attributes are the large "fangs" at the front of the upper and lower jaws and on the palatine bones, leading to its misleading nickname among fossil hunters and paleoichthyologists, "the saber-toothed herring". These fangs, along with a long sleek body and large eyes, suggest Enchodus was a predatory species. Mosasaurs are an extinct group of large Marine Dinosaurs that probably evolved from a group of aquatic Lizards known Aigialosaurs in the Early Cretaceous, living from 100 million years to 20 million years ago. After the extinction of Ichthyosaurs and the decline of Plesiosaurs, Mosasaurs became one of the most dominant marine predators in the ancient seas. They breathed air, were powerful swimmers living in the warm shallow inland seas & gave birth to live young rather than returning to the shore to lay eggs. They ate mollusks with shells & had double-hinged jaws and flexible skulls resembling those of modern reptiles. Millions of years ago, during the Miocene Period, the ocean was ravaged by one of the largest sharks to have ever existed. The Charcharocles Megalodon. With adult sharks reaching lengths of close to 65 feet, and a maximum tooth size of 7 1/16", this was by far the deadliest predator to have roamed the oceans. Fortunately, they have been extinct since around the Pliocene Epoch, about 2 million years ago. Â

1936 Pearson Birds, #40 Heron, Bitterns. 8" x 11" Comes with mat board. Birds of America. T. Gilbert Pearson, Editor-in-Chief, Garden City Publishing Co., Inc. c1936.

Lot: 481 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #128 Rose
