One Owner Sumida Gawa Pottery Collection! A FABULOUS single owner collection of traditional Japanese Samida Gawa/ Sumidagawa pottery. The collection includes vases, pitchers, mugs, tea pots, bowls, floor vases and MORE!. Collectors reside all over the world for this artistic Japanese style pottery! Traditionally, Sumida has a painted matte body, a heavy colorful flambe style drip glaze on the top 1/3rd, and applied figures of people, animals and more! Each piece was hand formed and placed. Some are traditional, some are telling a story, and some are even humorous! Sumida Gawa is a softer raku pottery that was made begining in the early 1800s locally. Sumida Gawa was made exclusively for export beginning in the late 1800s and ending at the beginning of World War II. The production of Sumida was revived following the end of the war and still continues. Sumidas name comes from the Sumida River whose course takes it by the Asakusa pottery district near Tokyo. The Japanese word gawa translates as river. The most infamous creator and makers are from the Ryosai family. Ryosai I, active in Tokyo between 1875 and 1900, invented a pottery style that utilized flowing glazes between applied figures. Ryosai II, born in 1860, continued to work in his fathers traditional style. His son Ryosai III (1888-1971) moved his manufacturing operation to Yokohama in 1924. Hara Gozan, Ishiguro Koko, and Sezan are other famous potters who produced Sumida. MOST pieces in this auction are marked on cartouche applications. Only a few are unmarked. Each piece is unique and different!! *** Please note that all traditional and authentic Sumida Gawa pottery was hand made from start to finish. Each piece is an original and each piece may wear differently. Noted to be intentional for aesthetic, body paint flaking on each piece is welcomed and expected. Some pieces may have had paint touch ups. Several in the making irregularities in the figures from being hand formed and placed are also expected in this kind of artistry. Each piece is described and pictured in great detail, but may have tiny or flea speck chips in applied figures unseen.
