African Senufo Kafigeledjo Oracle Figure, Ivory Coast. Wood, cloth, feather, quills, encrusted patina. On stand. Size: Height on stand: 33.5" (89 cm). Provenance: Allen Davis Collection, Santa Fe, NM. The kafigeledjo ("he who speaks the truth") gives visual representation to invisible bush spirits and function as a divination device. The kafigeledjo are created and used by Senufo divination specialists to provoke a sense of anxiety and guilt in those who have committed wrong-doings but have yet to be punished. Kafigeledjo divination uncovers misdeeds, false testimony, and culpability.

Nigerian Bush Cow Mask, Katana or Related People. On stand. Wood, natural pigment. Size: 20'' x 11'' x 13'' (51 x 28 x 33 cm). Height on stand: 24" (61 cm). Inventory #TW1155, original #1721. There’s a bit of a mystery surrounding this masks as it obviously old and used, yet it has defied identification. It appears Wheelock bought this mask thinking it was from Burkina, perhaps because the seller presented it as such. Although not classically Kantana, the tubular mouth calls to mind Mumuye vabo masks, while the unusual, conical projections are reminiscent of those on some Kantana/Mama masks. Provenance: Thomas G. Tapa Cloth Fragment and Stencil, Tonga, Mid-Late 19th C. Tapa or bark cloth made from bark that has been softened through a process of soaking and beating and designed applied with vegetable dyes. Framed. Together with a Tapa Cloth Stencil, Kupesi-Tonga, used to imprint tapa cloth patterns, constructed of pandanus leaf base with coconut leaf midribs forming the design pattern. This particular kupesi represents the pine trees lining the road to the royal palace and would be an integral component in making the Sila o Tonga, the Tongan coat of arms tapa patterns. Two Oceanic Carvings, Early 20th C. Including: A figural staff and very unusual ritual canoe object, Admiralty Islands. A stylized canoe form with flanking finials that mimic traditional Admiralty Island canoe prows, having totem anthropomorphic figures emerging from the mouth of a spirit crocodile. Four stylized birds, that often appear on old Admiralty canoe prows span the center of the composition. The underside is less refined but from this perspective the croc’s sweeping jaw lines double and a graceful extension of the human figure’s legs. A reddish/brown, probably indigenous, coating has been applied. This is a sensitively carved, intriguing figure from the Admiralty Islands. From the collection of Joseph Salamanca.
