A first edition, first issue copy of A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1929. This significant work of American literature retains its original blue dust jacket illustrated with striking Art Deco imagery. The dust jacket shows notable wear, including tears, chipping, and fading primarily around the spine and edges, though it remains intact. The book's black cloth covers, with gilt title panel, exhibit mild rubbing and light shelf wear. This first edition of Ethic Amusements by Mr. Bellamy, published in 1768 and revised by his son D. This work is richly illustrated, featuring 2 engraved section titles, 44 engraved plates, 27 vignettes, and 8 additional engravings, many of which are by the renowned engraver G. Bickham. "Nimrod: Memoirs of the Life of the Late John Mytton" is a biography written by Charles James Apperley under the pseudonym "Nimrod." First published in 1835, this work provides a vivid and entertaining account of the life of John Mytton, a British eccentric and sportsman known for his extravagant and reckless lifestyle. The book is illustrated by Henry Alken and T. J. She was the youngest of five children and displayed a keen intellect and a love for learning from an early age. After her mother died in 1836, she took over household responsibilities but continued her education, eventually moving to Coventry, where she was influenced by free-thinking intellectuals. In the 1850s, Eliot moved to London, where she became the assistant editor of the Westminster Review, a leading journal of the time.

Measures 7.25" x 4" inches. Peter Boylston Adams (1779-1852) was a prominent merchant and political leader in Braintree, Massachusetts. His involvement in local civic and economic initiatives significantly shaped the town’s development. In addition to his influential role in Braintree, Adams had a notable presence in state politics and business ventures. Peter Boylston Adams was the older brother of John Adams, the second President of the United States. His sister, Polly Adams, known post-marriage as Mary Adams Tufts, was John Adams' niece. Polly, like her brother, played a role in the family’s historical legacy, though she is less well-known.

Hugo Junkers was a German engineer and aircraft designer, born on February 3, 1859, and passed away on February 3, 1935. He is best known for his contributions to the field of aviation. Junkers played a significant role in the development of all-metal aircraft, particularly the Junkers J 1, which is considered one of the world's first practical all-metal airplanes. His work in aviation technology laid the foundation for future aircraft design. Beyond aviation, Junkers also made contributions to the field of thermodynamics and heating technology. Dudley died one week later. An 1871 pension certificate from the U.S. Department of the Interior for Alexander Crockett of Captain Peter Dudley's company of the Kentucky Militia, active during the War of 1812. ABOUT PETER DUDLEY General Peter Dudley (1787–1869) was a prominent figure in Frankfort, Kentucky, known for his military leadership and civic contributions. Born to Ambrose and Ann Parker Dudley, who migrated from Virginia to Kentucky in 1793, Dudley quickly emerged as a leader in his community. He served with distinction in the War of 1812, first as a captain in the 10th Kentucky Volunteer Light Infantry and later as a major in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia. His long tenure as Adjutant General of the Kentucky State Militia, from 1829 to 1851, cemented his role in shaping Kentucky's military policies. Dudley’s civic involvement extended beyond his military service. A Grouping of 6 Chinese Emperor of Manchukuo Postcards with Harbin Cancellation 1934. On March 1, 1934, a significant event occurred regarding the Emperor of Manchukuo. On this date, Puyi, who had previously been the last emperor of China as a child, was installed as the Emperor of Manchukuo. Manchukuo was a puppet state established by the Empire of Japan in northeastern China and Inner Mongolia. Puyi, under Japanese influence, became the symbolic leader of this state. His installation as the Emperor of Manchukuo further solidified Japanese control over the region. It's important to note that Manchukuo was not internationally recognized, and its creation was widely seen as a result of Japanese aggression in the region. Puyi's role as emperor was largely symbolic, and the state was under strong Japanese influence throughout its existence until the end of World War II. Harbin cancellation stamp - The town name "Harbin" appears in the top segment. The date 1934 is shown in the center, and the country name "Manchoukuo" is shown in the bottom segment.

Gunner's Mate George Grant, b1775, from Donaghadee, Ireland lost his right eye from a musket ball shot aboard the cutter of the Royal Navy ship Antelope on March 25, 1804. The disfiguring wound was received when the ship was near Colijnsplaat, Noord-Beveland in Holland. The document is signed by the ship's captain, William Sidney Smith, the ship's lieutenant, master, surgeon, and purser, as well as the later examining surgeons who described the wound and signed off on the sailor's relief. The inception of the Chatham Chest finds its roots as a benevolent fund crafted to support injured Navy sailors. Its nomenclature is tied to the initial site where contributions were first deposited—Hill-house in Chatham. This compassionate initiative was spearheaded by Charles Howard, the esteemed Lord of Effingham. Charles Howard of Effingham (1602), known as Lord Howard of Effingham, collaborated with luminaries such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins following the pivotal events of the Spanish Armada's defeat in 1588. Their collective mission was "for the alleviation of wounded and retired English Mariners." The document shows wear and discoloration with a little loss to the top edge. Matted and framed. Franz Sigel (1824-1902). Photographic print mounted to paper of this artistic rendering of Anthony's portrait of Sigel. Signed ""F. Sigel, Maj. Gen."" Image measures 2"" x 3.25"". Sigel was a notable Union general during the Civil War. Initially commanding the 3rd Brigade of the Army of the West, he participated in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in 1861. Sigel’s leadership at the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862 was crucial to the Union victory. He also fought in the Battle of Cedar Mountain and the Second Battle of Bull Run. Sigel commanded at the Battle of New Market in 1864 and later served in the Department of West Virginia. His military career was marked by his strategic influence and his role in German-American advocacy.

Scarce Robert B Van Valkenburgh cut autograph. "Robert B Van Valkenburgh, Bath, N.Y." Cut page measures - 7.25" x 2.25". Robert Bruce Van Valkenburgh (September 4, 1821 – August 1, 1888) was a U.S. representative from New York, a Union Army officer in the Civil War, and later served as the U.S. Minister Resident to Japan. Born in Prattsburgh, New York, he attended Franklin Academy and practiced law in Bath. Van Valkenburgh was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1852, 1857, and 1858. Despite being the Republican candidate for Speaker in 1858, he lost to Democrat Thomas G. Alvord. During the Civil War, Van Valkenburgh led the recruiting depot in Elmira, organizing seventeen regiments. He served as a Republican in the 37th and 38th U.S. Congresses from March 4, 1861, to March 3, 1865, and was Chairman of the Committee on Militia. After the war, he acted as Commissioner of Indian Affairs in 1865. Appointed Minister Resident to Japan in 1866, he held the position until November 11, 1869. Notably, he prevented the delivery of the CSS Stonewall to the Tokugawa clan during the Boshin War. Returning to the U.S., Van Valkenburgh settled in Florida and became an associate justice of the Florida Supreme Court in 1874. He remained in this role until his death in Suwannee Springs in 1888, and he was buried alongside his wife at Old St. Nicholas Cemetery in Jacksonville. Vintage 1950s Westclox travel alarm clock, finished in cream with gold/bronze metallic accents, features a rolltop cover protecting the face and a rear hatch that allows it to stand upright.  Measuring approximately 4 x 3 x 2 inches, this clock model was widely produced in the 1950s and is the same style owned and used by Marilyn Monroe.  During the early 1950s, this model Westclox alarm clock was pictured beside Marilyn in several photographs snapped at her Doheny Drive apartment. Her actual clock, featuring an identical design to this one, was auctioned at Christie's in 2004 and is now part of the prestigious Marilyn Monroe Collection. The clock has a gold-tone face with mid-century Arabic numerals and a wind-up mechanism. The clock runs and ticks, and the alarm bell functions. Original personal stationery note card with printed “Mr. and Mrs. Clark Gable” on the front, dating to circa 1939-1941, featuring a signed inscription by Carole Lombard in green ink to a friend. The recipient's name is difficult to decipher, but resembles something close to “Rawagur”, very possibly a nickname for a friend. Carole was famous for giving her family and friends unique nicknames - like “Fieldsie”, “Teach” and “Bucket”; as author Robert Matzen notes, “The people in Lombard’s universe knew they had arrived if they picked up a nickname.” The note reads: “(Name) dear - you were an angel to remember my birthday. Thank you so very much dear. Love always, Carole.” Lombard has crossed out “Mr and Mrs Clark Gable” on the front. The card measures 4.5" x 7" when opened. This note relates to Lombard’s October 6 birthday during the period of her marriage to Clark Gable, whom she wed on March 30, 1939. Lombard, beloved for her roles in My Man Godfrey and Nothing Sacred, shared an iconic Hollywood partnership with Gable until her tragic death in a plane crash on January 16, 1942, while returning from a war bond tour. This note relates to Lombard’s March 30, 1939 wedding to Clark Gable in Kingman, Arizona. Gable and Lombard moved into their famous ranch house in Encino, California, in 1939, shortly after their wedding. The musical, based on the play My Sister Eileen, follows the story of two sisters from Ohio who move to Greenwich Village in the 1930s to pursue their dreams. Celebrated for its clever lyrics, dynamic score, and lively portrayal of New York City life, Wonderful Town was a critical and commercial success, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Lot: 263 - 1893 Advertising Card "Gentleman Jack" Boxer James J. Corbett Performance (Cheyenne, WY)

Original advertising card publicizing boxer “Gentleman Jim”, James J. Corbett. “Champion of the World - James J. Corbett - Under the Management of Wm. A. Brady”, with the handwritten note “At Cheyenne on June 13th, '93”. The card promotes Gentleman Jack, a theatrical production featuring Corbett. Following his 1892 victory over Sullivan, Corbett toured extensively with the play to capitalize on his fame. The card references an 1893, performance in Cheyenne, Wyoming, part of Corbett’s tour across the West. These cards were typically distributed to promote upcoming shows and featured images of the star, along with dates and locations. Gentleman Jack combined elements of sport and theater, offering Corbett a venue to engage with audiences outside the ring while maintaining his public profile as both an athlete and entertainer. Measures 4.25" x 6.5" inches. James J. Corbett (1866–1933) was the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1892 to 1897. He defeated John L. Sullivan to claim the title, ending the bare-knuckle era. Corbett retired with a 24-4-3 record, including 12 wins by knockout. He was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
