Carved Oak Bench in Gothic Revival Style This bench is carved oak in gothic revival style. It has four panels in the back, each of which bears an armed and armored figure. These run from gothic full plate to 17th century Cavalier. The bench has scrolled arms. There are rails on the legs. Source: The full provenance of this bench is unknown, but it was bought at auction from the estate of Dr. A.W. McAlester, who was descended on his mother's side from Dr. Henry Clay, M.D. of Bourbon County, KY. Dr. Henry Clay was a first cousin of Green Clay, father of Cassius Clay, and John Clay, father of Henry Clay the statesman. This piece may have been owned by a Clay ancestor of Dr. Henry Clay. Condition: Fair. The bench is largely structurally sound with expected overall wear but the arms are loose and may detach if handled much. It measures 73' w by 21 /2' d by 41 1/2' h. Below the writing surface, there is one drawer with round knobs for additional storage and lopers with brass knobs. The desk stands on four slender, turned legs. When opened, the desk features a fold-down writing surface and reveals a well-organized interior with multiple compartments and three small drawers. The top features a horizontal surface with a slightly protruding, curved edge detail. Above this surface, there is a central raised panel flanked by two doors. The doors have recessed panels and are attached to the main structure by hinges at their sides. When open, they reveal multiple shelves of varying heights inside, providing ample storage space for books, documents, or decorative items. Rare Ivory Calling Card Case A truly exceptional and highly sought-after Chinese carved ivory calling card case dating back to the late 1700s or early 1800s. This exquisite piece showcases intricate and detailed carvings depicting various scenes, possibly representing daily life or cultural traditions. This piece has been described to us as "museum quality". Calling card cases were essential social accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used to convey visits, invitations, and messages between individuals. When someone wished to visit a friend or acquaintance, they would leave their calling card at the door. The card served as a notification of their visit and a way to express their intentions. During our research, we found a similar item in the National Museum of American History. It measures 4 1/4' by 2 3/4' and 5/16 of an inch deep.

Antique Oak Sideboard with Hand-Painted Cabinet Doors Featuring an antique oak sideboard. The sideboard features a rectangular top with visible wood grain and edges that show signs of wear, indicative of its age and use. Below the top surface, there are two cabinet doors for storage, each adorned with colorful hand-painted scenes. The sideboard stands on four turned legs. These legs are connected by a stretcher at the base, which is a horizontal piece of wood providing additional support and stability to the structure. The stretcher is positioned closer to the bottom of the legs, creating an open space between it and the bottom of the cabinets. Also included is three curved and hand painted wooden panels. The panels have splits in the wood (see photo). Each panel measures 13 1/2' by 10'. The sideboard measures 40 1/2' (w) by 18' (d) by 36 1/2' (h). The left drawer is locked and we do not have the key. The right drawer can be opened. See matching table and chairs in lot 18.

Born at Mount Joy, Virginia, he was educated at Georgetown University and the Virginia Military Institute. Denby became a lawyer and served through the Civil War, achieving the rank of Colonel. After the war, he resumed practicing law. In 1885, he was appointed as the minister to China and served in Peking for thirteen years. During his tenure, he also played a significant role during the war between China and Japan, with the Japanese placing their interests in China in his care. Denby was later appointed to the commission to investigate the conduct of the War with Spain and became a member of the Philippine Commission. He authored "China and Her People," published in two volumes in 1906. The frame measures 16' by 14 1/2'. "Deaccessioned property from the Ashland Estate being sold by the Henry Clay Memorial Foundation with proceeds to be deposited to the Ashland Acquisition Fund for further Acquisitions and direct care of collections."
