NATIVE AMERICAN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT BY E.C. BOLTE. American, circa 1915-1925. Portrait painted by Bolte (possibly Ernst Christel Bolte, born 1889 in Hawaii-died 1966 in California) after a black and white printed photo on a magazine or program page (folded page included in the lot). The folded page possibly from one of the early Miller Brothers and 101 Ranch Real Wild West souvenir "route books", ca. 1910-15). The published photo is signed "Joseph Miller" in the lower right (Colonel Joseph Carson Miller, 1868-1927, operator and general director of the 101 Ranch Wild West Show). Founded in 1879 by Miller's father and run by the Miller family, the 101 Ranch compiled 110,000 acres of leased Indian lands across four Oklahoma counties. Creating a self-sufficient, working showplace that employed thousands of people (including many from the indigenous tribes), the ranch had its own school, show grounds, general store and café, hotel, newspaper, magazine, meat packing plant and even its own scrip or money. Started on the ranch by Colonel Joe in 1905, The 101 Ranch Wild West Show had close to 80,000 people on the ranch opening day for the frontier exhibition with such attractions as the Apache prisoner Geronimo, Buffalo Bill, Tom Mix, plus a buffalo hunt and barbecue, Indian sports and dancing, and a gigantic parade. The show traveled all over the world lasting 35 years until 1939. Joe was seen as a real friend to and beloved by the Native peoples that inhabited the ranch. Anco Bilt stretcher is 16"w. 20"h.
