Lot: 1 - Paul Colin, Le Bal Fleuri

Paul Colin Le Bal Fleuri 1927 62 h x 46 w in (157 x 117 cm) "Colin's use of a 'triple exposure'—three virtual snapshots of an elegant couple making their way around a packed dance floor, layered one on top of another and drawn from three different points of view—creates a wonderful, sweeping sense of stop-motion sequencing to promote a 1927 springtime 'floral ball' held to benefit French orphans." (Crouse/Deco, p. 156) Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 117; PAI-LXXV, 291 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 2 - Paul Colin, Grand Gala du Printemps / Bal des Valses

Paul Colin Grand Gala du Printemps / Bal des Valses 1936 46.75 h x 31.5 w in (119 x 80 cm) Colin clearly enjoyed the visual effect of swishing skirts on the dance floor, as he used this method in at least one other design (see Colin, 65 and No. 6). Here, a Spring Gala is announced to benefit the Belgian Red Cross. Imp. Ch. Bulens, Bruxelles This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 3 - Paul Colin, Bal Toulouse-Lautrec

Paul Colin Bal Toulouse-Lautrec 1935 22.625 h x 15.125 w in (57 x 38 cm) Directed and designed by Colin, this ball held at the Moulin de la Galette was an homage to the famed Toulouse-Lautrec. This impressive composition gives a nod to Lautrec's love of La Goulue doing her high kick in the quadrille—a gesture immortalized in his iconic poster for the Moulin Rouge. This is the smaller format version of the poster. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 45; Colin Affichiste, 126; PAI-LXXI, 308 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 4 - Paul Colin, Bal des Trois Dimensions

Paul Colin Bal des Trois Dimensions 21.875 h x 14.125 w in (56 x 36 cm) An event benefitting Colin's art school held at the Tabarin boasts the inclusion of "transvestites, parades, and numerous attractions." These were certainly different times. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 5 - Paul Colin, Bal des Arts

Paul Colin Bal des Arts 1947 23.375 h x 15.625 w in (59 x 40 cm) Held at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild, this poster for an annual arts ball shows a painting literally coming to life to dance with an alabaster female sculpture. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 142; PAI-LVII, 287 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Bal des Arts 1950 23.5 h x 15.625 w in (60 x 40 cm) One of a variety of posters Colin created for the annual Artist's Ball, this one had a witchcraft theme. Literature: PAI-LXVIII, 349 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 14 - Paul Colin, Bal a la Comedie Francaise

Paul Colin Bal a la Comedie Francaise 1932 47.125 h x 39 w in (120 x 99 cm) As both a superior designer and a man about town, Colin was often asked to make posters for various balls and fetes over a thirty-year period. Here, it's for a highly prestigious charity ball for the benefit of an actors' retirement home, attended even by then-French president, Albert Lebrun. Yet the affair stirred up a cauldron of controversy in the press, as it marked a major break in the tradition of the Comedie Francaise, which hitherto had never allowed a ball on its premises. Colin acknowledges the host with the silhouette of a bust of Moliere (by Houdon) used for the background in his design. France Affiches, Paris Literature: Colin, 44; Colin/Affichiste, 120; PAI-XLII, 245 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 15 - Paul Colin, Bal des Nations / Ailes Brisees

Paul Colin Bal des Nations / Ailes Brisees 1929 22.875 h x 15.25 w in (58 x 39 cm) Colin announces a Ball of Nations benefitting the National Federation of Aviators, with the image threatening imminent demise if Parisians don't contribute to the cause. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 17 - Reymond, in the manner of Paul Colin, Bal des Affiches / Ecole Paul Colin

Reymond, in the manner of Paul Colin Bal des Affiches / Ecole Paul Colin 1934 22.375 h x 14.375 w in (57 x 37 cm) For the annual Bal des Affiches organized by Paul Colin's students, one of his pupils, Reymond, designed this Colin-esque announcement showing a multiplying dancer and artist getting his groove on. Literature: PAI-XCI, 221 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 18 - Paul Colin, Les Bleus de l'Amour

Paul Colin Les Bleus de l'Amour 62.375 h x 47 w in (158 x 119 cm) A departure from Colin's usual portraiture, this jazzy Cubist montage promoting a blues nightclub reeks of cigarette smoke and moves to the muted blare of trumpets and sax. As evocative as the design is, it raises a few questions: who is the beleaguered tuxedo-wearer at the bottom? A gentleman dragged out against his will by his young girlfriend? Or is he the eponymous owner of Club Alfred who puts up with the latest sounds for the sake of the business they bring in? And that little train in the background—is it a nod to the American blues refrain, "I hate to hear that lonesome whistle blow"? At any rate, it's especially rare! Publicite Artistique & Commerciale Literature: PAI-XX, 218 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 19 - Paul Colin, Maya

Paul Colin Maya 1937 61.25 h x 46 w in (156 x 117 cm) "The play Maya went through many revivals over a 30 year period. The production at the Studio des Champs-Elysees had only about 20 performances in 1924, but in 1926 Gaston Baty decided to give the play a second chance and for the occasion he ordered this poster. The play was a success, running for 376 consecutive performances and it was subsequently translated into 17 languages... The composition shown here is one of several done for Maya by Colin and the poster was given much of the credit for the play's success at the time. One can see why: Colin has perfectly captured the heroine, a streetwalker... The sharp delineation of the progressively disrobed heroine, with the night/day slash, in which Colin actually uses two reds and two blacks, one each for the 'daytime' and 'nighttime' personality. It is a very strong, effective poster, one of his best and a masterpiece by any standard" (Colin, p. 8). This is the larger format. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 22; Colin Affichiste, 9; PAI-LII, 209 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 20 - Paul Colin, Revue Espagnole

Paul Colin Revue Espagnole 1926 63 h x 47.5 w in (160 x 121 cm) This rare Colin design vibrantly announces an evening of Spanish entertainment hosted by the composer Jose Padilla. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: PAI-LXIX, 326 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 21 - After Paul Colin, Theatre Pigalle / La Chauve Souris

After Paul Colin Theatre Pigalle / La Chauve Souris 1924 37.75 h x 15.625 w in (96 x 40 cm) Austrian-born Max Reinhardt (1873-1943) became Germany's most influential figure in the Expressionist movement of the early twentieth century. If the internationally-acclaimed director had one special gift, it was his eclecticism. He was, quite possibly, the most versatile director the theatre has ever seen. He embraced realism, symbolism, and expressionism, combining them in a perfect mixture for each play he directed. Reinhardt shared composer Richard Wagner's aesthetic theory that it was the responsibility of the modern stage to recreate a perfect mixture of music, poetry, dance, and song in order to appeal to the senses and the feelings. In brief, that made him the perfect person to helm this Theatre Pigalle production of Wagner's classic operetta, "La Chauve Souris," or "Der Fledermaus," as it was originally titled. This "d'apres Colin" design advertises the musical diversion with a breezy, sophisticated elan lifted directly from Prince Orloffsky's second act ball. Literature: PAI-XXXIX, 246 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 22 - Paul Colin, Le Carrousel des Ondes

Paul Colin Le Carrousel des Ondes c. 1965 22.25 h x 14.375 w in (57 x 37 cm) Colin invites us to an event at the children's park of Paris with stylized silhouette figures representing the performing arts and a pattern of radio waves. Titled "A Carousel of the Airwaves," it was a fundraiser for Rhin and Danube, a nonprofit organization which collected funds for widows of the Free French soldiers who fought to liberate Europe during World War II. Imp. Vasselais, Paris Literature: PAI-XVIII, 247 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 23 - Paul Colin, Pleyel

Paul Colin Pleyel 1928 62.625 h x 46.125 w in (159 x 117 cm) One of the rarest of all Colin posters, this design for a concert hall (which still exists today) is from the artist's deepest Art Deco period: he employs angled shapes, prominent letters, and a spare use of color. The reflection of the letters in the polished surface is an inspired touch. Imp. Hachard, Paris Literature: PAI-XV, 236 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 24 - Paul Colin, Grand Guignol / La Machine Rouge

Paul Colin Grand Guignol / La Machine Rouge 1931 23.75 h x 15 w in (60 x 38 cm) "The Theatre du Grand-Guignol, located in a former Baroque chapel, presented each evening two tragic plays, filled with violence, coupled with two comic, almost vaudeville-like, plays. Spectators regularly passed out in the theatre. This theatre originated the adjective 'grandguignolesque' (an incongruous combination of appalling violence and slapstick comedy) which has become part of common French speech. The guillotine depicted in La Machine Rouge (The Red Machine) was probably one of the more harmless accessories on stage. Tension is added here by the jostling couple, the tipping bottle and table, the fence, and the bloody blade of the guillotine" (Colin, p. 10). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 61 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 25 - Paul Colin, Ces Messieurs Dames

Paul Colin Ces Messieurs Dames 1932 22.75 h x 15.5 w in (58 x 39 cm) This poster promoted a revue with music by Vincent Scotto (Josephine Baker's favorite composer who wrote her biggest hit, "Two Loves"); the star was Cora Madou. Colin contributed 25 set designs for the show, which was presented at the Studio de Paris. France Affiches, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 23; PAI-LXXXV, 268 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 26 - Paul Colin, Toulouse-Lautrec at Brothel : Drawing

Paul Colin Toulouse-Lautrec at Brothel : Drawing oil on board 17.25 h x 23.125 w in (44 x 59 cm) Colin pays homage to his poster predecessor in this imagining of Toulouse-Lautrec visiting a brothel. Signed. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 27 - Paul Colin, L'Ennemie : Maquette

Paul Colin L'Ennemie : Maquette c. 1931 watercolor, gouache, ink 24 h x 18 w in (61 x 46 cm) Colin takes cues from the Cubist movement to create a dynamic announcement for a theatrical performance at the Theatre Antoine. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 28 - Paul Colin, Theatre Pigalle / Donogoo : Maquette

Paul Colin Theatre Pigalle / Donogoo : Maquette gouache and ink 23.75 h x 18 w in (60 x 46 cm) Colin noted that "During the creation of Donogoo by Jules Romains, at the Pigalle theater, I lived shoulder to shoulder with Louis Jouvet who, for this play, had arranged, in the thirty sets that I had built, a production whose memory has not faded" (Colin Affichiste, p. 14). This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 29 - Paul Colin, La Machine A Calculer

Paul Colin La Machine A Calculer 1927 47.125 h x 31 w in (120 x 79 cm) This poster promotes the French production of Elmer Rice's 1923 play The Adding Machine, a landmark of American expressionism, which focuses on Mr. Zero, an accountant at a large, faceless company. After 25 years, he's replaced by an adding machine. Shocking and ironic drama ensues. This is an extremely rare example of Colin stripping away all conventions of commercial art—and Jazz Age trappings—to arrive at a pure Modernist interpretation of a mind deep in calculation. The play was revived for the autumn 2017 season at Dallas's Theater Three. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 7; PAI-LXXXV, 292 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 30 - Paul Colin, Theatre St. Georges / Destination Inconnue

Paul Colin Theatre St. Georges / Destination Inconnue 1928 63 h x 47.375 w in (160 x 120 cm) "Horror reigned at the Grand Guignol and people flocked in, not knowing or caring much about the plot of the play they were about to see, but taking comfort in the certainty that they were going to be frightened out of their seats" (Colin, p. 10). And seeing as the St. Georges Theatre's production of Destination Unknown was directed in part by former Guignol director, Camille Choissy, audiences could certainly expect to receive more of the same thrills and chills. And Colin's eerily erotic poster no doubt helped to lure lovers of the macabre in droves. Though no plot traces could be dug up for the play, the poster tantalizes, yet reveals very little. Colin divides the surface into three clearly delineated areas: at right, "Laughter," indicated by glowing violet candlelight; at center, an ominous cadaver; and third, a drooling fiend in shadowy black and white called upon to represent "Terror." Even with these hints, many questions remain—but the design certainly piques one's morbid curiosity, creating a desire to know more. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: PAI-XXXIV, 341 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 31 - Paul Colin, La Rouille

Paul Colin La Rouille 1929 62.5 h x 47 w in (159 x 119 cm) La Rouille (Rust) was one of the first pieces of theatre to sharply criticize Soviet Communism in the West. Written by Russians Vladimir Kirchon and Andrei Ouspenski, it was adapted into French and premiered at the Theatre de l'Avenue in Paris on November 22, 1929. Rust consisted of 10 short sketches or vignettes each dramatizing an aspect of Communist existence in Moscow, according to the Brisbane Courier of Jan. 25, 1930. The leading character, Constantine Tereklne, is an utter scoundrel, and each successive scene adds to the picture of the misery, poverty, depravity, and hopelessness which constitutes life in the Russia of to-day. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: PAI-LXXV, 299 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 32 - Paul Colin, Grand-Guignol / La Main de Singe

Paul Colin Grand-Guignol / La Main de Singe 1930 62.625 h x 46.375 w in (159 x 118 cm) "We know nothing of the plot of La Main de Singe (The Bloody Hand); what matters is that a new machine—a rotary printing press—has been added to the arsenal of horror weapons. Asked about his unusual, almost photographic, treatment in this poster, Colin says: 'You can interpret Mistinguett or plays and actors in various ways, but for a drama whose sole purpose is to frighten, the poster must itself become terrifying and gruesome and this does require a realistic treatment" (Colin, p. 10). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 60; PAI-XXXVI, 286 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 33 - Paul Colin, Ambigu / Rapide de Minuit

Paul Colin Ambigu / Rapide de Minuit 1925 43.125 h x 30.5 w in (110 x 77 cm) The play Rapide de Minuit was common melodramatic fare for the Ambigu Theatre, which specialized in keeping audiences on the edges of their seats. Here, Colin frenetically displays the horrifying climax of the play, when the foreman of a jury condemns a young woman to the electric chair for murder. The verdict runs against public sentiment; friends and even his own family turn against him, until he has to prove to his own satisfaction that the woman was indeed guilty. Nearly a decade later, the play would be made into the film "Midnight" (later titled "Call It Murder") starring Humphrey Bogart. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 14; Colin Affichiste, 6; PAI-LI, 280 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 34 - Paul Colin, Theatre St. Georges / Le Jardin des Supplices

Paul Colin Theatre St. Georges / Le Jardin des Supplices 1929 23.75 h x 15.75 w in (60 x 40 cm) This grisly image announces the play The Garden of Torture at the Theatre St. Georges. The plot follows a French doctor involved in a dirty practice which gets him extradited to China. There, he falls in love with a young woman who leads him to a mysterious garden where he learns that she enjoys watching slaves being tortured. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 35 - Paul Colin, Tetes de Rechange

Paul Colin Tetes de Rechange 1926 61.125 h x 46.5 w in (155 x 118 cm) This early and amusing poster by Colin is for the Jean-Victor Pellerin play Tetes de Rechange (A Change of Faces) which opened in 1926 at the Studio des Champs-Elysees. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 94 (var); Colin Affichiste, 8; PAI-IX, 246 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 36 - Paul Colin, Les Mathurins / Le Collier

Paul Colin Les Mathurins / Le Collier 1929 23.5 h x 15.75 w in (60 x 40 cm) The play Le Collier (The Necklace) dealt with a society woman whose necklace, through an unhappy coincidence, betrays her shadowy past—and Colin virtually reveals the whole plot in this exceedingly economical double-image design. A tenebrous night shades the entire image, again hinting at the drama to come. Rare! Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 56 (var); Colin Affichiste, 14 (var); PAI-LXXXVI, 200 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 37 - Paul Colin, Pour le Centenaire de Pirandello : Maquette

Paul Colin Pour le Centenaire de Pirandello : Maquette c. 1967 gouache and ink on board 39.75 h x 31 w in (101 x 79 cm) This is the preparatory work for Colin's final poster celebrating the theatrical author Luigi Pirandello. Literature: Colin, 112; Colin Affichiste, 35; PAI-XCI, 228 (all var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 38 - Paul Colin, Centenaire de Luigi Pirandello

Paul Colin Centenaire de Luigi Pirandello 1967 58.875 h x 38.875 w in (150 x 99 cm) "The 100th anniversary of the birth of Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was celebrated throughout the world. This genial author, whose plays, such as Chacun sa verite (To Each His Own Truth), La volupte de l'honneur (The Delight of Honor), and Six personnages en quete d'auteur (Six Characters in Search of an Author), set the tone for much of today's drama, started writing at the age of 50 in 1917 and then went on to give us 43 plays. The year 1967 saw many revivals in Paris as well as a special play for the occasion, Se trouver (To Find Oneself) at the Theatre Antoine, for which Colin produced this moving tribute" (Colin, p. 12). Imp. St. Martin Literature: Colin, 112; Colin Affichiste, 35; PAI-XCI, 228 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 39 - Paul Colin, Chatelet / Rose de Noel : Maquette

Paul Colin Chatelet / Rose de Noel : Maquette gouache and ink 63 h x 44.375 w in (160 x 113 cm) The Christmas Rose was a musical play that paid tribute to Hungarian composer Franz Lehar and, over the course of three hours, recounts the life of Lehar and his companions during late 19th century Hungary. Signed. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 40 - Paul Colin, Devi Dja's

Paul Colin Devi Dja's 47.5 h x 31.25 w in (121 x 79 cm) Indonesian-born Devi Dja launched her career in dance at the young age of 13; she quickly became a star of dance, theatre, and film at home and abroad, earning her the nickname "Pavlova of the Orient" after ballerina Anna Pavlova. Colin depicts her in her traditional apparel for a performance in France. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 41 - Paul Colin, Theatre Pigalle / La Chauve Souris

Paul Colin Theatre Pigalle / La Chauve Souris 1934 23.5 h x 15.25 w in (60 x 39 cm) "Die Fledermaus, by waltz master Johann Strauss, is one of the most successful operettas in the world. In 1934 she was just sixty years old but still popular. This show had the honor of being put together and directed by the great German director Max Reinhardt who had just fled Nazi Germany and was going to the United States to make a film" (Colin Affichiste, p. 34). Imp. de Vaugirard, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 21 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 42 - Paul Colin, Theatre Pigalle / La Chauve Souris

Paul Colin Theatre Pigalle / La Chauve Souris 1934 23.875 h x 15.625 w in (61 x 40 cm) This is a color variant of the previous poster. Imp. de Vaugirard, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 21 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 43 - Paul Colin, La Nuit / Ballets Russes

Paul Colin La Nuit / Ballets Russes 1952 46 h x 29.375 w in (117 x 75 cm) Paul Colin not only designed posters for the revolutionary Ballets Russes—he also made significant contributions to the troupe as a theatrical designer. In 1952, he again provided his creative services—this time, for a summer resort ball at the municipal casino, which was surely a festive occasion. Colin's spectacular brevity once more comes to the fore: the vivacity and flare of the evening's festivities are encapsulated in the sole dancer's featureless form; she's exuberantly lost in the purity of uninhibited movement. P.S.P. Opera Literature: PAI-XCII, 194 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 44 - Paul Colin, Theatre Pigalle / Montmartre

Paul Colin Theatre Pigalle / Montmartre c. 1942 58.5 h x 38.5 w in (149 x 98 cm) "For the play Montmartre by Pierre Frondaie, Colin evokes the spirit of that quarter, so dear to the poets, artists, and posterists of the time. Frondaie, a novelist of little note, was skilled at adapting famous novels to the stage: Pierre Louys' 'Aphrodite,' Anatole France's 'Sylvestre Bonnard,' Claude Farrere's 'La Bataille,' owe their stage success to him. The Theatre Pigalle was built in 1929 by the Rothschild banking family but was demolished about 30 years later; it had not been one of their profitable ventures" (Colin, p. 10). This poster has a war stamp. Societe Nouvelle Publicitas Literature: Colin, 68; Colin Affichiste, 27 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 45 - Paul Colin, L'Amour Magicien

Paul Colin L'Amour Magicien 1926 46.5 h x 31.5 w in (118 x 80 cm) Henri-Rene Lenormand's plays were tense psychological dramas; Colin therefore borrowed some of the technique of German expressionists and produced an image of a woman haunted by shadowy specters from her subconscious. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 20; Colin Affichiste, 5; PAI-XI, 181 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 46 - Paul Colin, Garden Party

Paul Colin Garden Party 1968 23.75 h x 15.75 w in (60 x 40 cm) "Balls involved not only students and artists, but professional groups as well. In this charity ball, to raise money for widows and orphans of doctors, Colin used an obviously appealing symbol, the child, eyes open and hands outstretched. The silhouette with a pointed hat is reminiscent of the doctors in Moliere's plays, but it's obvious that the dancing, in the background, is quite contemporary. Although Colin, as seen, will use shadows and details in the background of his compositions, he is always certain to use a strong, central motif to catch the eye. Commenting on this poster, he states, 'You must create an atmosphere, but you must also catch the eye with something. See the child's eyes... even if you were driving by in a hurry, you would notice this child. And the hat'" (Colin, p. 9). Imp. Mourlot, Paris Literature: Colin, 46; Colin Affichiste, 124 (both var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 47 - Paul Colin, Champs Elysees / Olive Negres

Paul Colin Champs Elysees / Olive Negres 1926 62.625 h x 47.25 w in (159 x 120 cm) "This unusual poster—the only other black-and-white poster of Colin which I have ever seen is that of Madika [see No. 119]—celebrates an equally unusual, and now somewhat obscure, sketch at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees. Colin himself does not recall it but we can surmise that Olive Negres was a sketch meant as a parody of the colonial exhibits which were being organized all over France at that time. A couple of Africans are shown visiting the French in 'Le Village Blanc.' The caricature was as much of the hosts as of the visitors. The primitive look, enforced in its black-and-white simplicity, is further abetted by the hand-drawn lettering. The book for this sketch was by Henri Falk, music was by Jean Wiener... and decors and costumes by the great painter, Jean Hugo, great-grandson of Victor Hugo" (Colin, p. 7). Imp. H. Lot: 48 - Paul Colin, Anastasia

Paul Colin Anastasia 1955 58.5 h x 39 w in (149 x 99 cm) The shadow behind the performer wears a crown, subtly suggesting the dual personality of the heroine of this stage play by Marcelle Maurette. The plot has a mysterious woman emerge from obscurity with a claim that she is Anastasia, heir to the Russian throne, who was supposedly murdered as a child with her whole family many years before in the Bolshevik revolution. Juliette Greco, who took on the role on the French stage, was born in 1926 in Montpelier, and made her debut in the 1940s in Paris with existentialist chansons. This stage experience gave her career a boost, and she thereafter appeared in several French and international films. Colin perfectly captures the quiet reserve and yet great inner strength which Greco projected in her role. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 34; PAI-XXV, 280 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 50 - Paul Colin, Casino de Paris / Sex Appeal

Paul Colin Casino de Paris / Sex Appeal 1932 19.625 h x 14.25 w in (50 x 36 cm) "The great actress and singer, Marie Dubas, born in Paris two years after Colin, in 1894, started as a singer of operettas such as Franz Lehar's La Valse des Libellules and Andre Messager's L'Amour Masque. She was one of the leading singers of the thirties, often favorably compared to Edith Piaf and Annie Cordy. She starred in revues at the Casino de Paris and the Concert Mayol. The revue advertised here, Sex Appeal 32, had a tough act to follow, the very successful 1931-32 revue titled Paris qui remue... but it would appear that Dubas, with the help of Charpini, Pills and Tabet, and Andrex, overcame that obstacle and, if the lively poster by Colin, who is credited with inspiring and decorating the whole revue as well is any indication, it was a successful show. Commenting... on Dubas, Colin [said], 'She was very successful and she was very sexy; as for the show, I did everything—the costumes, the stage designs, the program, the poster'" (Colin, p. 10). Lot: 51 - Paul Colin, Apollo / Matricule 33

Paul Colin Apollo / Matricule 33 1930 41 h x 29.125 w in (104 x 74 cm) "During the 1930s Colin did a great deal of the advertising art for the Theatre de l'Apollo, then situated next to the Casino de Paris, and his prodigious output for it included dozens of programs and posters. It was in this huge and attractive house that operettas and big spectacles (such as Mary Dugan's Trial) were staged... The drama for which Colin provides this 3-color poster, Matricule 33, belonged to a genre that was fashionable at the time: the detective play. Again, the element of suspense, the impending danger, is expressed by means of piercing eyes emoting from a human void, and heightened here by the open door. You can hear it squeak. Surely we want to know what lurks beyond..." (Colin, p. 9). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 40; Colin Affichiste, 20 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 52 - Paul Colin, Theatre St. Georges / Les Mangeurs d'Hommes

Paul Colin Theatre St. Georges / Les Mangeurs d'Hommes 1929 23.375 h x 15.375 w in (59 x 39 cm) The play was based on a novel by Perye published in 1928, named Ong Cop, mangeur d'hommes (Ong Cop, Man Eater). The author was not widely known, but specialized in stories about the colonies and tropical islands. We can presume that this play was set in Vietnam. The Theatre St. Georges was founded in 1929 by Camille Choisy, who was also the director of this play. In fact, this play was maybe the second performed in this new theatre, which specialized in dark, dramatic, and macabre plays. This is not a surprise because at the same time (between 1914-1930) Choisy was also the director of the Theatre du Grand Guignol, as mentioned in the poster. A well known theatre in Paris since the middle of the 19th century, they specialized in scary, bloody, pornographic, and scandalous plays. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 53 - Paul Colin, Festival Beethoven

Paul Colin Festival Beethoven 1941 61.5 h x 44.875 w in (156 x 114 cm) Colin created this hazy vision of Beethoven for a commemorative concert that was held at the Palais de Chaillot and featured orchestras and choirs organized by Marguerite Long and Charles Munch. Imp. A. Karcher, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 54 - Paul Colin, Au Grand Large

Paul Colin Au Grand Large 1926 62.75 h x 45 w in (159 x 114 cm) This play by a British author was published in 1923. The dark plot follows a group of people who meet on a liner. They realize they are all dead and waiting to receive the verdict of whether they go to heaven or hell. The poster has some similarities with the cover of the book. The Comedie des Champs Elysees is a well-known Art Deco theatre that still exists in Paris. The play was directed by Louis Jouvet, who is a master of theatre from the first part of the 20th century, and was also the director of the theatre at this time. He is still an important reference in the worlds of theatre and cinema. The play also featured Michel Simon, as famous as Jouvet in theatre and cinema, and considered by Chaplin as the best actor in the world. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 55 - Paul Colin, Festival Ravel

Paul Colin Festival Ravel 1941 62.625 h x 47.5 w in (159 x 121 cm) Just four years after the death of the famed French composer Maurice Ravel, a tribute concert was held by the Conservatory Concert Society. Similar to his promotion for the Beethoven concert (see No. 53), Colin keeps the design simple with a portrait of the composer in the center of all the pertinent text information. Imp. A. Karcher, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 63 - Paul Colin, Blanche Montel / Les Trois Mousquetaires

Paul Colin Blanche Montel / Les Trois Mousquetaires 1932 47 h x 31 w in (119 x 79 cm) Colin dispenses with his more typical multifaceted promotional style in order to deliver this straightforward portrait of Blanche Montel (1902-1998) in the role of Constance Bonacieux, a role that she would assume in both of the French-released "Three Musketeers" films of 1932. Colin executed several posters for the film, which was the first sound version of the Alexandre Dumas swashbuckling classic. Imp. des Presses Universitaires, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 42; PAI-XLIII, 284 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 64 - Paul Colin, Les Miserables

Paul Colin Les Miserables 1933 62.75 h x 44.25 w in (159 x 112 cm) The famous novel of Victor Hugo has been seen on film, in one interpretation or another, more than twenty times since 1907. Potentially the most ambitious was that directed by Raymond Bernard and starring Harry Baur in the title role of Jean Valjean. In its original version, it consisted of three parts with a total running time of five hours and fifteen minutes. For each of the parts, Colin created a one-sheet and a two-sheet poster; this is the one-sheet version for the third part. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 68 - Paul Colin, Paul Colline / Les Trois Mousquetaires

Paul Colin Paul Colline / Les Trois Mousquetaires 1932 45 h x 30.875 w in (114 x 78 cm) This is one of two posters created by Colin for the first sound version of "The Three Musketeers." The actor Colline did not have a very big role in the film, but it made sense to feature him because he was very well known to the French public from the radio, on which he was one of the most popular singers at the time. The poster employs Colin's usual economy of lines and colors. Imp. des Presses Universitaires, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 41; PAI-XV, 234 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 69 - Paul Colin, La Premiere Legion / Charles Boyer

Paul Colin La Premiere Legion / Charles Boyer 1951 63.125 h x 46.5 w in (160 x 118 cm) "The First Legion" was an American film that followed a Jesuit instructor experiencing a crisis of faith. It was based on a play of the same name which opened on Broadway in 1934 with an all-male cast. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 70 - Paul Colin, Cinema Edouard VII / Katharine Hepburn

Paul Colin Cinema Edouard VII / Katharine Hepburn c. 1935 93.25 h x 30.375 w in (237 x 77 cm) The lovely Katharine Hepburn starred in this 1947 Western film directed by Elia Kazan. A tale of love and loss, farming, motherhood, and betrayal, Kazan was ultimately unhappy with the film and discouraged his friends from seeing it. Nevertheless, it was the most commercially successful of the Hepburn-Tracy MGM films, making over $3 million in the U.S. This is a two-sheet poster. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 71 - Paul Colin, Journal d'un Cure de Campagne

Paul Colin Journal d'un Cure de Campagne 1950 60.75 h x 45.125 w in (154 x 115 cm) For an artist given to calling upon multifaceted portraiture to express the inner workings of his subjects, Colin shows amazing restraint—to reflective, soulful ends—in this poster for the French film, "Diary of a Country Priest." Based on the 1936 novel by Georges Bernanos about a clergyman's spiritual development in a small community, it initially seems like an odd choice for screen adaptation as all of the soul-wrenching conflicts take place in the protagonist's mind. But in the hands of French New Wave pioneer Robert Bresson, the intellectual subject was tackled with admirable skill, becoming a classic in the process. Framing the story with the priest actually writing a diary and recounting events with a gentle voice-over, Bresson proved that inner turmoil can be projected with good use of film narrative, solid low-key acting, and deft editing. The priest is faced with many frustrations, disappointments, despair, temptations, and illness, and eventually dies in great pain from stomach cancer while murmuring, "All is grace." The final diary entry is then written by someone else about his death. Publicite Jean Laurance Literature: Colin Affichiste, 51; PAI-XXXII, 281 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 72 - Paul Colin, Television : Maquette

Paul Colin Television : Maquette 59.25 h x 46.75 w in (150 x 119 cm) Resembling a design Cassandre made for Philips in 1951 (see PAI-LXXX, 298), Colin gives the blue swirl a whirl for an unrealized poster. Hand-signed gouache, ink, and watercolor maquette. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 73 - Paul Colin, La Derniere Etape

Paul Colin La Derniere Etape 62.25 h x 44.75 w in (158 x 114 cm) This film by Wanda Jakubowska, survivor of the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, recounts the horrible atrocities which she and her fellows were subjected to. Most of the roles were played by the other survivors with whom she stayed in contact. This semi-documentary was obviously not a commercial project, and Colin probably got little or no pay, but this was one of the posters he contributed to good causes in his mature years. The film had a brief release in the U.S. with the title "The Last Step." Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 49; PAI-XV, 229 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 74 - Paul Colin, La Chanson du Bonheur

Paul Colin La Chanson du Bonheur 23.25 h x 11 w in (59 x 28 cm) Colin advertises an operatic film in three acts with an Alpine atmosphere resembling that in "The Sound of Music." Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 77 - Paul Colin, Zouzou / Josephine Baker

Paul Colin Zouzou / Josephine Baker 1934 62.5 h x 45.75 w in (159 x 116 cm) This graphic image promotes the film Zouzou, whose greatest acclaim is featuring Baker as the first black woman to star in a major motion picture. As a child, Baker's Zouzou is a traveling circus performer who has been paired with a non-blood-related twin, Jean. Even when they're older, Jean treats her as a sister, but Zouzou falls in love with him. Through this lovelorn drama, Zouzou eventually becomes a star performer in her own right. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 78 - Paul Colin, Bal Negre

Paul Colin Bal Negre 1927 61.5 h x 45.5 w in (156 x 116 cm) "It had been more than a year since the Revue Negre started a 'black craze' in Paris. American Negro art, music and dress, as perceived by the Parisians, was tremendously popular. On Rue Blouret a Negro dance hall had opened its doors and the Parisian smart set gathered there each evening to dance with themselves and with the blacks... And as if one night was meant to crown or synthesize all this, the Bal Negre was held on February 11, 1927... Colin recalls this event fifty years later: 'I organized the Bal Negre and I put up the money myself for this evening of dance at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees. We had a full house. All the society people were there. There must have been at least 3,000 people.' For poster collectors today, [this poster] is the most prized—and most expensive—of all [Colin's] posters" (Colin, p. 7). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 19; Colin Affichiste, 113; PAI-LXXXVI, 202 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 79 - Paul Colin, Bal Negre

Paul Colin Bal Negre 1927 25.5 h x 19.5 w in (65 x 50 cm) This print is based on Colin's famous 1927 poster for the Bal Negre (see No. 78). Although he dates this the same year, it was most likely executed at a later date. The one-night event at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees was meant to crown the whole "black craze" which swept into Paris in 1925 with Josephine Baker and the Revue Negre. It was organized entirely by Paul Colin and was a hugely successful event. Josephine Baker was not the model but, according to Colin, she was quite definitely his inspiration. Lot: 80 - Paul Colin, Josephine Baker / Casino de Paris / La Joie de Paris

Paul Colin Josephine Baker / Casino de Paris / La Joie de Paris 1932 35.375 h x 15.375 w in (90 x 39 cm) Immediately after Mistinguett's Paris Qui Brille closed at the Casino de Paris, Josephine Baker launched her latest theatrical spectacle: La Joie de Paris. The program for the show promised 22 "colored boys" in addition to other exotic novelties, naming Josephine "the soul of jazz." In this energetic image, Colin shows Baker and her shadows in the midst of a provocative dance. France Affiches, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 81 - Paul Colin, Tabarin

Paul Colin Tabarin c. 1930 62.25 h x 46.25 w in (158 x 117 cm) This is the rarely seen larger format of a poster for the Bal Tabarin, which opened in 1904, and eventually became home to the cancan, then later the Charleston, or whatever the latest dance craze was. It allegedly looked from the outside like the entrance to a tomb, but inside it was hot and, as the magazine Candide put it: "The star of the Tabarin, that's woman" (3/4/1937). To say this graphically, Colin uses one of his favorite techniques, a multiple exposure portraying the history of dance at the Tabarin: Jane Avril does the cancan, La Argentina swishes her flamenco skirt, and Josephine Baker struts toward us doing the Charleston. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 25; Colin Affichiste, 172; PAI-L, 215 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 82 - Paul Colin, Tabarin : Maquette

Paul Colin Tabarin : Maquette 1928 23 h x 17 w in (58 x 43 cm) In this preparatory work for his final poster, we can see all of Colin's elements falling neatly into place. Watercolor, gouache, and graphite maquette. Framed. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 84 - Paul Colin, Andre Renaud

Paul Colin Andre Renaud 1929 61 h x 45.5 w in (155 x 116 cm) "The two pianos which Andre Renaud played simultaneously are thrown at us with seeming abandon, but, like all these geometric 'tricks' of Colin, they are very deliberately drawn for maximum effect. The effect Colin seeks here—to overwhelm us with the wizardry of Renaud—is achieved by the overwhelming size of the pianos. Renaud, who went on to become a bandleader, even played the two pianos blindfolded for a while" (Colin, p. 9). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 39; Colin Affichiste, 74; PAI-XCI, 224 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 85 - Paul Colin, Delfy

Paul Colin Delfy 46 h x 30.25 w in (117 x 77 cm) The man passionately hammering away at the ivory keys is Enrique Pedro Delfino (a.k.a. Delfy), an Argentinean tango composer, pianist, conductor, and lyricist. He was the Victor Borge of his day and was quite prolific, having written 200 tangos as well as soundtracks for theatre and film. He traveled extensively in South America and Europe, and recorded with RCA Victor in New Jersey. Colin masterfully captures the artist's energy and elan in this design. Imp. Maurice Dupuy, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 86 - Paul Colin, Jean Sablon

Paul Colin Jean Sablon 62 h x 46.875 w in (157 x 119 cm) The engaging nightclub performer we see strutting out of a French horn was a kind of Parisian Mel Torme, "one of the most celebrated 'velvet-voices' of his era" (Colin Affichiste, p. 88). The popular crooner began his career in 1932 as a band singer in Paris and soon became a recording star in both French and English. Colin also created a poster in 1946 to celebrate Sablon's return to France after spending the war years in the U.S. Rare! Lot: 87 - Paul Colin, Damia

Paul Colin Damia 1929 62.75 h x 46.5 w in (159 x 118 cm) Born in 1892, Maryse "Damia" Damien is often called "the grande dame" of French song. She began her career as a member of Loie Fuller's troupe, appearing in Folies-Bergere revues and various small plays and films, before making it as a chanteuse. Her signature ensemble consisted of a long, black, sleeveless dress with a deep, plunging neckline, as shown here by Colin. He also claims to be the person who came up with the idea of placing her in front of a black velvet curtain, allowing only her pale face and arms to be seen by the audience—a trick she used her entire professional life. This is the larger format. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 55 (var); Colin Affichiste, 83 (var); PAI-LXXXVIII, 288 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 88 - Paul Colin, Damia / Columbia

Paul Colin Damia / Columbia 1941 63 h x 47.375 w in (160 x 120 cm) Created eleven years after the previous poster, "the black curtain has been removed, the house lights have been turned on, and the plunging neckline has been raised. This may say something about a change in Damia's character, Colin's style, or possibly in the mood of the country itself. For war raged, and France was occupied. What a difference the position of arms and hands makes: in 1930 it was a defiant, 'give me life,' palms-up reach and now, in 1941, hands are crossed on her hip, constrained and resigned. Possibly like the country. Her dress is still black, but lacking the plunging neckline, it becomes a mourner's cloak" (Colin, p. 11). This poster is hand-signed by the artist. Literature: Colin, 89 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 89 - Paul Colin, Mitty Tillio et Ricaux / Casino de Paris

Paul Colin Mitty Tillio et Ricaux / Casino de Paris 1928 62.25 h x 46.75 w in (158 x 119 cm) For at least this one stand at the Casino de Paris, the acrobatic dance duo of Mitty & Tillio became the trio of Mitty, Tillio, and Ricaux. In this routine by the ever inventive dancers, Tillio and Ricaux seem to be playing human football with the airborne Mitty. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 68; PAI-XCI, 213 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 90 - Paul Colin, Georgia Graves

Paul Colin Georgia Graves 1928 60.625 h x 45.125 w in (154 x 115 cm) Trained by Ernest Belcher in Los Angeles, Georgia Graves quickly became one of the more celebrated dancers in the Western World. This poster was created for her performance at the Folies-Bergere, during which she combined both dance and acrobatics to create wildly exuberant routines. She frequently utilized giant balls (she called them "bubbles"), oversized fans, and other large-scale props, creating a half-burlesque, half-circus performance. Lot: 91 - Paul Colin, Fortunia

Paul Colin Fortunia c. 1949 46.5 h x 30.5 w in (118 x 77 cm) Didi Fortunia (Louise Maguerite Verna) was an actress, singer, and dancer from Haiti. She had a short career mostly in France during the 1950s and '60s. She had roles in the movies "Pensione Edelweiss" (1959), "Pleasures of Paris" (1952), and "Une femme par jour" (1949), and was in the famous Broadway play, Folies Bergère. Imp. Lot: 92 - Paul Colin, Gham-Bo

Paul Colin Gham-Bo c. 1930 22.875 h x 14.875 w in (58 x 38 cm) This is one of Colin's most bizarre designs in that no historian can agree on what exactly it is advertising. Some sources have claimed that it was created to promote a magician's trick. Arrington, Paris Literature: PAI-LXIX, 334 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 93 - Paul Colin, Katherine Dunham : Two Maquettes

Paul Colin Katherine Dunham : Two Maquettes 1946 12 h x Each: 8.25 w in (30 x 0 cm) These are two preparatory works for finalized posters promoting the famous dancer. Katherine Dunham was always met with an enthusiastic audience when she toured France. And while these images are certainly more mature and developed than those which Colin created for the Revue Negre, they still embody that unbridled air of the exotic flair which made her shows so popular. (2) Ink, crayon, and watercolor collages. Literature: Colin 98; PAI-LXXXVI, 203; PAI-LIII, 212 (all var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 94 - Paul Colin, Katherine Dunham

Paul Colin Katherine Dunham 1947 63 h x 46.125 w in (160 x 117 cm) Chicago-born Katherine Dunham has been called the matriarch and queen mother of black dance. While a student at the University of Chicago, she took a leave of absence to study Caribbean dance and ethnography—a performance path she'd follow for the rest of her life. 1947 was a huge year for her. She began it by choreographing the musical play Windy City, which debuted in her hometown; then she opened a cabaret show in the brand-new tourist destination of Las Vegas, and followed that up with tours in Mexico and Europe, where she was an immediate sensation. Colin's poster, a spiritual successor to his world famous Revue Negre and Bal Negre (see Nos. 76 and 78) for Josephine Baker, captures the Windy City jazz opening in Paris: all fishnets and flappers and zoot suits and gangster hats. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin 98; PAI-LXXXVI, 203 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 95 - Paul Colin, Katherine Dunham

Paul Colin Katherine Dunham 1949 59.25 h x 39.5 w in (150 x 100 cm) Known as the "Matriarch of Black Dance," Katherine Dunham pioneered the art of modern African dance, bringing it to thousands of viewers in the Americas and Europe. From the mid-1940s through the 1960s, she choreographed over 90 dances, maintained the only Black American dance troupe, and headlined dozens of shows herself. Dunham was likely inspired by the Revue Negre of 1920s Paris, and developed a fresher and more disciplined performance group out of this tradition. Colin would go on to do all of her posters. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 30; PAI-LXXXIV, 295 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 96 - Paul Colin, Espanita Cortez

Paul Colin Espanita Cortez 1944 59.5 h x 44.625 w in (151 x 113 cm) Before switching to film in the early 1950s, Espanita Cortez was known as an interpreter of regional Spanish dances at the Opera Comique."This is a most interesting poster for her by Colin, who indicates that he had a special fondness for her: 'She was once my mistress—she was a little dancer—she danced Spanish dances but she wasn't really Spanish.' Colin has certainly drawn her 'little' in this poster, her small form floating and almost lost in the larger color backdrop. It's also one of the few Colin posters in which the lettering is essentially hand-drawn as opposed to machine-composed" (Colin, p. 11). Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 80 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 97 - Paul Colin, Espanita Cortez : Maquette

Paul Colin Espanita Cortez : Maquette 1944 gouache and ink 30.875 h x 23 w in (78 x 58 cm) This is Colin's preparatory work for his final poster (see PAI-LXXVI, 247), which is remarkably faithful to his original draft. Literature: Colin Affichiste, 108; PAI-LXXVI, 247 (both var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 98 - Paul Colin, Band : Maquette

Paul Colin Band : Maquette c. 1939 14.5 h x 16.5 w in (37 x 42 cm) Similar in style to his many jazz musicians in Le Tumulte Noir and elsewhere, this smiling brass band fills the page with punctuated energy. A certificate of authenticity from Alain Weill is included on the verso. Gouache and ink maquette. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 99 - Paul Colin, Lily Mounet

Paul Colin Lily Mounet 1925 62.25 h x 46.25 w in (158 x 117 cm) The coquettish Lily Mounet (1895-1978) was a film actress born in Cannes. Aside from a few titles in which she appeared, little else is known of the stylish starlet. imp. H. Chachoin, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 100 - Paul Colin, Jacques Chenais / Les Comediens de Bois

Paul Colin Jacques Chenais / Les Comediens de Bois 63 h x 47.25 w in (160 x 120 cm) This design for a marionette troupe operating under the name of Jacques Chenais' Wooden Comedians is a marvel of understatement and grace. With the masked commedia dell'arte blockhead acting as the company's sole ambassador to the public, Colin's mischievous implications can't help but make one wonder what this puppet has stumbled across. And the lovely concert of simple curves and linear elements creates an undeniably satisfying graphic tension. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: PAI-XXXV, 278 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 101 - Paul Colin, Rozsi Rethy

Paul Colin Rozsi Rethy 1931 63 h x 45.75 w in (160 x 116 cm) "Daughter of a Hungarian director based in Paris, Rozsi Rethy became a famous violinist. She recorded at Pathe" (Colin Affichiste, p. 78). Delattre, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 86 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 102 - Paul Colin, Rosario & Antonio

Paul Colin Rosario & Antonio 1949 58 h x 45 w in (147 x 114 cm) For more than 25 years, Rosario and her cousin Antonio, from Seville, had a world-famous flamenco dance partnership. They starred in three Hollywood movies and performed on Broadway. Paul Colin's 1949 poster is a marvelous capture of devotion in motion: the symmetry of knees bending, the concatenation of arms twisting, and Rosario's balancing act twinned with Antonio's soaring leap. Literature: Colin, 99; Colin Affichiste, 112; PAI-LXXII, 191 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 103 - Paul Colin, Alix Combelle / Jazz de Paris

Paul Colin Alix Combelle / Jazz de Paris c. 1938 62.75 h x 46.75 w in (159 x 119 cm) Swing was a short-lived French jazz record label of the 1930s, and saxophone and clarinet player Alix Combelle and his band appeared on it regularly. The music they played was red hot, but Colin did the design—an extremely rare one at that—in blue. Once more, he used multiple exposure, a most effective graphic ploy. Combelle, born in 1912, was one of the best French disciples of the Black jazz idiom, and he recorded with such American artists as Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, and Lionel Hampton. Imp. A. Karcher, Paris Literature: PAI-XIII, 180 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 104 - Paul Colin, Serge Lifar

Paul Colin Serge Lifar 1935 60.75 h x 45.25 w in (154 x 115 cm) Serge Lifar, born in Kiev in 1905, became the last of Diaghilev's discoveries. Only a teenager when he joined the Diaghilev troupe, within two years he was made premier danseur (1925), a post he held until Diaghilev's death and the dissolution of the company in 1929. He began his choreographic career with his mentor and, with his appointment to the Opera in Paris in 1930, he launched himself as a prolific creator of ballets, many of them starring vehicles for his own artistry. Surely this is one of the finest posters ever created for a dancer and even among the many superb dance posters produced by Colin... it has to rank at or near the top... [T]he effective use of his two favorite colors, red and black, the strong central image, the movement of the dancer by imposition of the form over the face, the use of light and shadow, the typography—everything works together, and well (Colin, p. 10). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 63; Colin Affichiste, 92; PAI-LXXXIII, 299 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 105 - Paul Colin, Gine Narcy

Paul Colin Gine Narcy 62.625 h x 47.5 w in (159 x 121 cm) Actress Gine Narcy's greatest claim to fame was her appearance as the chanteuse in the 1933 film "Le martyre de l'obese" (The Martyrdom of the Obese), in which a woman tries to make her cheating husband jealous by flirting with a portly man. Atelier Paul Colin, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 106 - Paul Colin, Joe Alex

Paul Colin Joe Alex 1926 50.75 h x 44.875 w in (129 x 114 cm) "Joe Alex was part of the Revue Negre troupe which had made such a big smash in Paris in 1925, the year before Colin created this poster for him. Many of those performers went back to America, but many others stayed in Europe and launched successful careers on their own; one of them was Alex. A stunning dancer from the nightclubs of Harlem, he became a choreographer and an integral part of many successful black American revues in Paris, including Florence Mills' Blackbirds of 1926, Louis Douglas' 1936 troupe, and the Cotton Club Revue of 1937. Much of the compelling quality of this 3-color poster (blue, brown, and black) comes from Colin's fine sense of composition: by using strong, almost geometric lines to frame what could have been just another profile, Colin has turned the performer—and the poster—into a most engaging subject" (Colin, p. 7). This printing is without the bottom text panel with Alex's name. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris (not shown) Literature: Colin, 15; Colin Affichiste, 65; PAI-L, 214 (all var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 107 - Paul Colin, Grock / Odeon

Paul Colin Grock / Odeon 1928 44.875 h x 28.125 w in (114 x 71 cm) Known as the king of clowns, the Swiss artist Grock (Adrien Wettach, 1880-1959), was at one point in time the highest paid performer in the world. Here, he bows a copy of his own album in promotion of his latest Odeon record. Atelier Paul Colin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 70; PAI-LXVIII, 343 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 108 - Paul Colin, Suzy Solidor : Painting

Paul Colin Suzy Solidor : Painting 1940 28.5 h x 20.875 w in (72 x 53 cm) Compared to his prodigious output of posters, Colin's paintings are extremely rare, yet he obviously had a firm grasp of the technical side of it. Suzy Solidor (1906-1983) was born Suzanne Rocher; it was not until she began singing at the L'Europeen music hall in 1934 that she adopted her stage name. She was blonde, tall, and athletic and sang with a deep voice, mostly about sailors and the sea. She was featured in all the big music halls and cabarets for 30 years. In addition to her stage appearances, she was a radio, recording, and film star as well. And she is particularly remembered for entertaining Parisians tirelessly in the dark days of German occupation during World War II. At the height of her career, she commissioned her portrait from leading artists such as van Dongen, Derain, Kisling, and two from Colin. Signed oil painting. Literature: PAI-XV, 239 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 109 - Paul Colin, Disques Odeon / Carlos Gardel

Paul Colin Disques Odeon / Carlos Gardel 1930 71.875 h x 46.875 w in (183 x 119 cm) "Carlos Gardel was, as this poster makes clear, a darkly handsome singer who passed himself off as an authentic Argentinean. Although his repertoire was limited to tangos, he was in fact a Frenchman, born in Toulouse in 1890. He made several films, released by Paramount, all with Spanish titles... the last one [was] also released in English as 'The Day You Love Me.' This poster may have been used for his appearance in Henri Varna's revue, 'Parade de Femmes,' at the Palace; it was definitely used also in a record dealer display and sleeve design by Odeon Records. Gardel died in an airplane accident in 1935 and was mourned almost as much as Valentino" (Colin, p. 8). Rare! Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 28; Colin Affichiste, 79; PAI-XXIV, 248 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 110 - Paul Colin, Lys Gauty / Columbia

Paul Colin Lys Gauty / Columbia 1942 62.75 h x 45.625 w in (159 x 116 cm) "In the mid-1930s, Lys Gauty remained for several years the most popular singer on the radio and in record sales... after Tino Rossi. Unlike the latter, she did not seek a career in cinema and remained in singing" (Colin Affichiste, p. 86). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 104 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 111 - Paul Colin, Line Viala / Columbia

Paul Colin Line Viala / Columbia 1941 61.75 h x 45 w in (157 x 114 cm) Line Viala was a celebrated pianist and accordionist. Colin depicts both of her instruments, though the piano receives a much more minimal treatment, emerging from the black reserve of the paper. Literature: Colin Affichiste, 101; PAI-XCI, 218 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 112 - Paul Colin, Disques Odeon

Paul Colin Disques Odeon 1930 62.625 h x 46.25 w in (159 x 117 cm) "Colin must have done over 30 posters for Odeon artists and frequently American counterparts of Odeon, such as Columbia, would use the same poster design... In fact, Colin claims to be the first artist to have created a poster for records... This poster is quite different from the others, for it seems to promote the Odeon library rather than any single artist and it does so in a playful manner, using the image of a clown, a popular enough symbol for Frenchmen at that time" (Colin, p. 9). Imp. Reunies, Paris Literature: Colin, 41; Colin Affichiste, 175 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 113 - Paul Colin, Jean-Pierre Aumont

Paul Colin Jean-Pierre Aumont 1935 62 h x 44.75 w in (157 x 114 cm) Colin looks at the actor both objectively and subjectively. At left, we see the camera's view; at right, we're given the artistic impression using two shades of yellow—sand and cadmium—and the merest hint of the features one remembers, such as the eyes and the well groomed hair. Jean-Pierre Aumont was born in 1909, made his debut in the theatre at 20, and eventually became a big film star, appearing on the screen regularly between 1931 and 1976. He even made some guest appearances in Hollywood productions, such as "Lili" in 1953. During World War II, he fought with the Free French and got decorated with the Croix de Guerre as well as the Legion d'Honneur. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 89; PAI-XV, 232 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 114 - Paul Colin, Jean-Max

Paul Colin Jean-Max 62.25 h x 46.625 w in (158 x 118 cm) Jean-Max (1894-1970) was a film actor who specialized in dark, brooding German espionage films of the 1930s. The Colin poster for the performer is a masterpiece of moody evocations composed of relatively few elements, but it conveys an undeniable emotional resonance. The divided face with a silhouette lurking in the shadows of the darker half demonstrates Colin's ability to effortlessly explore a multifaceted personality. And although the shadowy Jean-Max remains a bit of a mystery, Colin's design definitely generates interest in the subject. Imp. Joseph Charles, Paris Literature: PAI-XCI, 212 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 115 - Paul Colin, Gaby Sims

Paul Colin Gaby Sims 61 h x 45.375 w in (155 x 115 cm) In his poster for Gaby Sims—an artist who has sadly faded from the record—Colin subtly implies an easy-going manner and gentle sway with four clearly defined quadrants. He then locks the viewer in with the direct gaze of the wry, fresh-faced Sims, who playfully hooks us with intrigue while portioning out just enough visual hints to allow the imagination to take control. Delattre, Paris Literature: PAI-XXXV, 286 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 116 - Paul Colin, La Granero

Paul Colin La Granero 1935 62.75 h x 47.375 w in (159 x 120 cm) Nothing is known about this sultry Spanish dancer who went by the stage name La Granero (literally, The Barn); however, her dramatic stance and coy smile would imply that hers was quite the seductive show. Imp. Joseph Charles, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 90; PAI-LXVI, 222 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 117 - Paul Colin, Jean Sarment

Paul Colin Jean Sarment 1930 61.25 h x 46.5 w in (156 x 118 cm) Born Jean Bellemere, Sarment was a popular cabaret singer throughout the 1920s and 1930s. He would later go on to enjoy a career in screenwriting and acting. Here, Colin depicts him in sharp profile against a moody Art Deco background. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 83; PAI-LXII, 224 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 118 - Paul Colin, Jean Borlin

Paul Colin Jean Borlin 1925 46.875 h x 30.5 w in (119 x 77 cm) "Jean Borlin was a principal dancer of the Royal Swedish Ballet when Rolf de Mare brought him to Paris in in 1920 as first dancer and choreographer of the Ballets Suedois at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees... According to Colin, de Mare 'was very rich' and he had brought the Swedish Ballet to Paris 'especially to show his young lover, Jean Borlin.' When Borlin died prematurely in New York on December 6, 1930 (he was buried in Paris a month later) at age 37, a stricken de Mare founded Les Archives Internationales de Danse, in his memory. This is another fine poster design for yet another dancer. Colin had an affinity for them... some of his best posters were, in fact, created for dancers... In the case of Borlin, Colin's poster went with him to Brazil, the United States, and other countries to announce the appearance of this avant-garde dancer" (Colin, p. 8). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 23; Colin Affichiste, 57; PAI-XLV, 268 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 119 - Paul Colin, Madika

Paul Colin Madika 1930 46.375 h x 30.75 w in (118 x 78 cm) "This and the Olive Negre poster are the only ones in black-and-white which I have seen in all the Colin posters viewed. The three dance positions of Madika, superimposed one on the other, give us a fine sense of dance and movement. But just who this Madika was remains a mystery. Colin frequently produced posters for obscure dancers and singers whom he befriended; this may be the legacy of such friendship" (Colin, p. 9). Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, 42; Colin Affichiste, p. 76; PAI-XCI, 214 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 120 - Paul Colin, Simone Dulac

Paul Colin Simone Dulac 1930 62.625 h x 46 w in (159 x 117 cm) An actress and script writer, Simone Dulac has few credits to her name, but she was advertised by the best of them: Gesmar, Barrere, and Colin all designed lovely posters for her. Based on her creative acquaintances, we can assume that she was quite the Parisian socialite. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 77 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 121 - Paul Colin, Marguerite Valmond

Paul Colin Marguerite Valmond 1928 61.75 h x 46 w in (157 x 117 cm) Among the most elusive of Colin's portraits of performers, this is also one of his best: it's a sensitive study of a chanteuse in a wistful mood. The poster was run off with the name misspelled as "Valmont"; instead of reprinting it, Chachoin ran off a quantity of "D"s and pasted them on. The color is slightly mismatched, but the interest value is only enhanced. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: PAI-XLII, 248 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 122 - Paul Colin, Lucienne Radisse

Paul Colin Lucienne Radisse 61.75 h x 46.75 w in (157 x 119 cm) The promising cello student Lucienne Radisse won the Prix d'Excellence at the Paris National Conservatory in 1918. As her concert career progressed, composers of the day deemed her an ideal interpreter of their works, and often counted on her elegant ease and vibrant sonority for premieres. Paris critics were too sophisticated to comment on her blonde beauty, but reviewers in outlying cities—like Geneva, Monte Carlo, and Chicago—often indicated that she was equally gratifying to look at and hear. Never one for prettifying, Colin concentrates here on the soulful quality of Radisse's playing and sets up a blue-black equation between the waisted shape of the instrument and the instrumentalist herself. Rare! Imp. Joseph Charles, Paris Literature: PAI-XXII, 306 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 123 - Paul Colin, Jean Weidt

Paul Colin Jean Weidt 1938 46.75 h x 30.375 w in (119 x 77 cm) While originally famous in Germany for working with Max Reinhardt, Jean Weidt truly achieved international acclaim when he emigrated to France in 1932 and became the country's foremost Modern dancer. Pub. R.L.D., Paris Literature: Colin, 43; Colin Affichiste, 94; PAI-LXV, 208 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 124 - Paul Colin, Mary Ditrix / Disques Pathe

Paul Colin Mary Ditrix / Disques Pathe c. 1934 61.75 h x 46.25 w in (157 x 117 cm) While no information remains regarding Mary Ditrix, it is obvious that she took her stage name and general look from the famous Marlene Dietrich. The poster, however, is absolutely marvelous, with the performer raising her arms enthusiastically above her head as three sketches of flamenco dancers circle around her torso. Delattre, Paris Literature: PAI-LXVII, 271 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 125 - Paul Colin, Anita Lueza

Paul Colin Anita Lueza 30 h x 21.75 w in (76 x 55 cm) "This is another fine portrait-poster by Colin, but yet another mystery: neither Colin's memory nor any research discloses any information about Anita Lueza. The poster remains our only clue to this lady; it tells us that whatever else she was, she was strikingly beautiful" (Colin, p. 9). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 48; Colin Affichiste, 97 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 126 - Paul Colin, Simone d'Arche

Paul Colin Simone d'Arche 47 h x 30.75 w in (119 x 78 cm) Another actress with just one film credit to her name (the 1936 "Bach detective"), Colin most likely took this commission to show off Simone's attractive features. Literature: Colin Affichiste, 75 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 127 - Paul Colin, Frehel

Paul Colin Frehel 1946 62.75 h x 47.5 w in (159 x 121 cm) In a very simple and direct way, Colin captures the characteristic slouch and somewhat dejected mien of this French chanteuse, who toward the end of her life struggled with alcoholism. As a young dancer, Marguerite Boulch had been Maurice Chevalier's partner both on and off stage. When she was replaced in both senses by Mistinguett, she went crazy and threatened to kill him. Afterwards, she switched from dancing to singing, adopting the stage name Frehel. Imp. A. Karcher, Paris Literature: Colin, 90; Colin Affichiste, 111; PAI-LIX, 318 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 128 - Paul Colin, Betty Spell / Columbia

Paul Colin Betty Spell / Columbia c. 1949 63 h x 46.75 w in (160 x 119 cm) Oh, Betty Spell, you certainly look like you were a charmer. It's too bad history didn't see fit to register more of your accomplishments. Apart from the fact that she made a few records for Columbia and appeared in several inconsequential French films between 1930 and 1954, little is known of the bewitching Ms. Spell. However, thanks to Colin, she has achieved this small slice of immortality, set down forever as a vivacious, leggy brunette with a receptive disposition. Imp. A. Karcher, Paris Literature: PAI-XLI, 237 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 129 - Paul Colin, Gus Viseur / Columbia

Paul Colin Gus Viseur / Columbia 1941 61 h x 46.125 w in (155 x 117 cm) The popular French accordionist Gus Viseur was a good friend of Paul Colin, and in this advertisement for eight of his 78-rpm records on the Columbia label, we get an image of the artist with minimal detail. The delicacy of the design is what gives it its intensity, with Colin juxtaposing the white silhouette of the musician against the stark black background and bright instrument. This is the small format version of the poster. Literature: Colin, 67; Colin Affichiste, 102; PAI-LII, 348 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 130 - Paul Colin, Benglia

Paul Colin Benglia 1928 61.75 h x 46.5 w in (157 x 118 cm) Habib Benglia (1895-1961) was a French actor from Algeria. He made himself famous at the theatre, and played in 25 films between 1926 and 1959. In Paris, he was quickly swept up by negrophilia, becoming a sexual icon at the cabarets and in the theatre. At the Folies-Bergere, he accompanied Josephine Baker on stage, wearing a short grass skirt to resemble her. The year before, Benglia had caused a sensation at the Folies by dancing with a white girl. J. A. Rogers, visiting Paris for the Amsterdam News, reported that this sight—'of a magnificent Senegalese Negro nude, save for a loin cloth, dancing with an equally striking white woman, similarly dressed'—had caused 'the crackers who are here in great numbers to gnash their teeth with rage... In the dance, the woman sat on his knee and caressed him. It sure made the Mason-Dixon folks mad...' (Josephine, p. 136). Here, Colin de-sexualizes Benglia by showing only his head above the neck—but he has imbued him with statuesque contours and a determined gaze, reflecting the common attribution that Benglia was like an ancient statue. Rare! Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 69; PAI-LXXX, 27 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 131 - Paul Colin, Blaise / La Voyante

Paul Colin Blaise / La Voyante 23.875 h x 15.75 w in (61 x 40 cm) This very rare Colin design for a magic act looks strikingly contemporary. He's used bold colors, energetic lines, and minimal text to draw us into the mysterious eyes. This poster is hand-signed. Literature: PAI-XCIII, 225 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 132 - Paul Colin, Tino Rossi / Columbia

Paul Colin Tino Rossi / Columbia 1936 39 h x 25.5 w in (99 x 65 cm) "Constantin Rossi, born in Corsica in 1907, became a very popular singer on the radio, in operettas, music halls, and, from 1934, in the cinema. From his very long career as a singer with a sweet voice, he remains in everyone's memory for his interpretation of Petit Papa Noel" (Colin Affichiste, p. 82). Literature: Colin Affichiste, 93 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 133 - Paul Colin, Jaime Plana / Columbia

Paul Colin Jaime Plana / Columbia 1942 63.125 h x 46.75 w in (160 x 119 cm) Born in 1905 in Spain, Jaime Plana became a chanteuse in France and also performed in the 1938 German film "The Stars Shine." Here, Colin provides a flattering backlit portrait for Columbia records. Literature: Colin Affichiste, 106 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 134 - Paul Colin, Lyvia Holos

Paul Colin Lyvia Holos c. 1935 62.875 h x 46.25 w in (160 x 117 cm) While no information remains on Lyvia Holos, one can gather from Colin's dynamic composition that she was an athletic and charming Modern dancer. Imp. de la Cinematographie Francaise, Paris Literature: PAI-LXXXIV, 201 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 135 - Paul Colin, Lucienne Delyle / Columbia

Paul Colin Lucienne Delyle / Columbia 62.75 h x 47 w in (159 x 119 cm) Born in Paris in 1913, Delyle initially pursued a career in pharmacy before being discovered as a singer. Her major breakthrough came with the 1942 hit "Mon amant de Saint-Jean" (My Lover From Saint-Jean) which led her to become the most popular French singer of the 1950s. Her career was cut short by leukemia, and she died in Monte Carlo in 1962. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 136 - Paul Colin, Anniversaire de la Liberation des Camps de Concentration

Paul Colin Anniversaire de la Liberation des Camps de Concentration 1965 61.25 h x 45 w in (156 x 114 cm) Originally created for the 1945 Nazi Crime Exhibition, presented by the French government under the auspices of the United Nations War Crime Commission, this brutal Colin image was reissued twenty years later to commemorate the liberation of the concentration camps. When Colin, an agnostic, was questioned about his decision to illustrate humanity's suffering in such a Christ-like manner, he replied, "Yes, if you insist, it's Christ. But it's really suffering, torture, humanity. I am anti-church. I believe that religions make war... So if you want to stigmatize, to evoke suffering, the fashionable martyrdom to use is that of Christ... Here you see, in this poster, a poor deported woman, nailed to the swastika. We should leave it at that" (Colin, p. 11). This is the larger format version of the poster. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 85; Colin Affichiste, 135; PAI-LIX, 320 (all var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 137 - Paul Colin, Liberte : Maquette

Paul Colin Liberte : Maquette 1944 55.875 h x 39.875 w in (142 x 101 cm) This was probably a refused maquette for a resistance poster during World War II. The dead soldier seems to be German due to his helmet. The gory image implies that the death of Germans will provide freedom to France, and we see the same type of imagery in the following lot. Signed gouache and crayon maquette. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 138 - Paul Colin, La Resistance

Paul Colin La Resistance 1948 60.75 h x 44.5 w in (154 x 113 cm) This one-day international demonstration in Paris against war and dictatorship was another of the many causes for peace that Colin, a great humanist, supported during this era. (That same year he created a poster announcing a worldwide congress of intellectuals for peace in Poland). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 143; PAI-XXI, 141 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 139 - Paul Colin, Dien-Bien-Phu

Paul Colin Dien-Bien-Phu 1955 30.75 h x 23.25 w in (78 x 59 cm) This poster is dedicated to the French troops that "sacrificed themselves for liberty" at Dien Bien Phu, the former French military base near the Laos border. Desperate pleas for United States intervention were unsuccessful and the fortress fell to North Vietnamese forces on May 7, 1954, after a fifty-six day siege—the Alamo of France's Vietnam war—signaling the end of French colonial power in Indochina. The soldier, as close to being crucified as Colin could dare without blaspheming, bleeds red, white, and blue. Paix et Liberte, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 171; PAI-I, 297 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 140 - Paul Colin, Dien-Bien-Phu

Paul Colin Dien-Bien-Phu 1955 93.375 h x 62.75 w in (237 x 159 cm) This is the larger, two-sheet version of the previous poster. Paix et Liberte, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 171 (var); PAI-XIX, 310 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 141 - Paul Colin, Dien-Bien-Phu : Maquette

Paul Colin Dien-Bien-Phu : Maquette 1954 31.5 h x 23.125 w in (80 x 59 cm) This is the preparatory work for Colin's final poster. Though both the poster and this maquette are undeniably potent, the painting conveys its visceral message with extreme textural conveyance, a raw expression that instantly bypasses intellect in favor of emotional response. Signed oil maquette on board. Framed. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 142 - Paul Colin, Varsovie Accuse : Maquette

Paul Colin Varsovie Accuse : Maquette 1945 gouache and acrylic on board 42 h x 31.375 w in (107 x 80 cm) "The French Government asked Colin's help in organizing a big exhibition... to commemorate the suffering of the Poles and to express Paris's feelings towards the citizens of Warsaw. And Colin responded with yet another moving poster; again we have the ruins, the eyes of Poland being two gaping holes in the country's structure, much of the emotional impact coming from the fire-like hair and the torn limb... [It] remains an eloquent testament to the suffering of the Poles, 'accusing' not only the Germans, but those who might forget" (Colin, p. 10). This is the preparatory work for the final poster. Literature: Colin, 71; Colin Affichiste, 161; PAI-LXV, 210 (all var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 146 - Paul Colin, Bons de la Defense Nationale : Maquette

Paul Colin Bons de la Defense Nationale : Maquette c. 1945 46 h x 30.5 w in (117 x 77 cm) This original artwork for a poster was intended to motivate the postwar French populace to invest in national defense vouchers. It's executed in a similar manner to Colin's famed 1944 Liberation poster (see No. 145). But where that poster presents its forward-looking Marianne figure still bearing the stigmatic wounds of German barbarism, this rock-solid Marianne is completely healed (at least on the outside), with reconstruction in full swing behind her, and an eye-shielding forward gaze that doubles as a salute to those working fiercely to put France on a path to total recovery. It's a powerful expression of national resilience and pride. Signed gouache and ink maquette. Framed. Literature: PAI-XLIX, 240 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 147 - Paul Colin, Silence

Paul Colin Silence 1939 46.875 h x 30.375 w in (119 x 77 cm) This was one of the most widely distributed posters in France during World War II. "Silence," the poster warns, "the enemy will steal your secrets." Although the Germans had yet to invade France, there was a general paranoia about the espionage war which had certainly already begun. This is the rare, larger format version of the poster. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 83; Colin Affichiste, 157; PAI-LX, 237 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Colin shows the Polish victims in a standoff with Nazi forces. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 149 - Paul Colin, Defense Passive

Paul Colin Defense Passive 1939 58.875 h x 38.375 w in (150 x 97 cm) "With the clouds of war looming on the horizon, defense officials, remembering the terrible experience of the First World War, taught the population some basic defenses, such as wearing a gas mask, which later turned out to be completely useless" (Colin Affichiste, p. 112). Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 82; Colin Affichiste, 155 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 151 - Paul Colin, Victoire

Paul Colin Victoire c. 1945 63.25 h x 46 w in (161 x 117 cm) The association Organisme National d'Aide aux Combattants (National Combatant Assistance Organization) was founded in 1916 to help wounded soldiers and their families. Because of the present-tense text which reads "They die for you," it was most likely printed just before the liberation of France. On the soldier's arm is the cross of Lorraine, who was the symbol of the resistance under de Gaulle. De Plas, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 152 - Paul Colin, Troupes Aeroportees

Paul Colin Troupes Aeroportees 1948 46.5 h x 30.75 w in (118 x 78 cm) "This recruiting poster for parachutists seems contradictory with Paul Colin's well-known pacifism. In fact, it should not be forgotten that at that time, insurgencies had started in Indochina and all evidence indicates that military forces were on standby to intervene" (Colin Affichiste, p. 118). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 166; PAI-XLI, 242 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Art et Resistance c. 1946 58.375 h x 39 w in (148 x 99 cm) This exhibition at the Palais de Tokio honored the efforts of French partisans and the "francs-tireurs," irregular military groups first deployed by France during the Franco-Prussian War and later reemployed against the Nazis in World War II. Imp. Courbet, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 154 - Paul Colin, Defense Nationale / Souscrivez

Paul Colin Defense Nationale / Souscrivez c. 1938 45.25 h x 30.625 w in (115 x 78 cm) "As Hitler began his invasion in 1938, surreptitiously absorbing Austria and the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, it was evident that war was imminent. It became urgent—although a little late—to think about equipping ourselves for a new conflict" (Colin Affichiste, p. 112). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 153 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 155 - Paul Colin, Defense Nationale / Souscrivez

Lot: 156 - Paul Colin, La Bataille de l'Eau Lourde

Paul Colin La Bataille de l'Eau Lourde 1948 62.25 h x 44.5 w in (158 x 113 cm) This documentary film recounts the "Battle of Heavy Water," an Allied military operation to destroy a heavy water production plant in Norway as part of the atomic bomb race. The effort was successful, and the heavy water—a material crucial to atomic bomb construction—was moved to Great Britain, away from German hands. This marked one of the first acts of French resistance. In the film, many of the involved parties play their own roles, including French scientist Joliot-Curie. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 157 - Paul Colin, Soiree Exceptionnelle

Paul Colin Soiree Exceptionnelle c. 1948 62.5 h x 45.75 w in (159 x 116 cm) In the wake of World War II and the liberation of France, Colin created this design announcing a benefit soiree for the widows and orphans of Parisian police officers who were killed in the line of duty. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 158 - Paul Colin, La Pensee Francaise

Paul Colin La Pensee Francaise 1946 46.875 h x 30 w in (119 x 76 cm) "This is one of the organizations of which Paul Colin was a member. At that time, he was even its president and willingly devoted his talent to declaring the association's intentions to act in favor of peace" (Colin Affichiste, p. 118). Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 165 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 159 - Paul Colin, En l'Honneur de Paris

Paul Colin En l'Honneur de Paris 1944 58.75 h x 38.25 w in (149 x 97 cm) With "Paris liberated (but the war still raging on other fronts), the Capital paid homage to those who freed it, and the newspaper Liberation sponsored an exhibition at the Palais de Chaillot. It must have been important to Frenchmen at the time to emphasize the courage and glory of its Army of Resistance, and if this is done with lack of objectivity and at the expense of the forces of General Leclerc and the Allied Armies, then it is at least understandable. And yet, its overstatement is made all the more obvious and poignant by the solitary resistance fighter who seems to have the burden of shielding the entire city behind him" (Colin, p. 11). Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 84; Colin Affichiste, 129 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 160 - Paul Colin, Ligue Maritime et Coloniale Francaise

Paul Colin Ligue Maritime et Coloniale Francaise c. 1921 23.5 h x 15.5 w in (60 x 39 cm) This league was created in 1921 by combining two preexisting groups: the Ligue Coloniale, created in the 19th century, which promoted the expansion of French colonization; and the Ligue Maritime, created in 1899 after the military defeat of Fachoda, which combined the military navy and the commercial navy. Both were influential groups equivalent to today's lobbies. They merged in 1921 and became immediately popular and powerful, and contributed to the expansion of France, especially in Africa, where there were already several colonies. Colin shows a white arm and a black arm shaking, but history tells us that this was likely not a friendly agreement. L'Edition Publicitaire This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 161 - Paul Colin, Emprunt de la Liberation

Paul Colin Emprunt de la Liberation c. 1945 63.125 h x 46.75 w in (160 x 119 cm) "Before the war, in 1938, Colin created a well-known poster for the 'Emprunt de la Defense Nationale' (National Defense Loan) which showed France, made of wheat and with factories behind her, holding the nation's shield and urging Frenchmen 'Souscrivez pour sauver la Paix et vos Libertes' (Subscribe in order to save the Country and your Freedoms). Now, in 1945, Frenchmen, in another Colin poster, are being urge to subscribe to the 'Emprunt de la Liberation' (The Liberation Loan). Charles de Gaulle's provisional government launched a great national loan drive to help with the reconstruction effort. Marianne, the Republic's symbol, brandishing the French flag after having broken her chains, leads the effort to financially rescue the state" (Colin, p. 10). Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 73; Colin Affichiste, 162 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 162 - Paul Colin, France d'Outre-Mer

Paul Colin France d'Outre-Mer 1945 62.875 h x 46.375 w in (160 x 118 cm) "This poster announced an exhibition—more of a tribute—to the contribution of 'France d'Outre-Mer' (Overseas France) to the war effort. Explains Colin: 'The French people didn't know what had happened to its colonies. This poster was intended to show that we still had our territories. Different people but under the same flag. It was supposed to unite the French and the people from the colonies; the flag had to be restored. There was a great exhibit at the Grand Palais and I was asked to recreate the atmosphere of each colony—Madagascar, Ivory Coast, etc.—with the indigenous music, costumes, decor of each. I was there with de Gaulle and the Colonial Minister at the opening.' Trophies, uniforms, banners, weapons, and other mementos of the war in the colonies were displayed, as well as native arts and crafts, and the theme of the entire exhibition was 'France's gratitude to her children'" (Colin, p. 10-11). Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 74; Colin Affichiste, 131 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 163 - Paul Colin, La Paix du Monde

Paul Colin La Paix du Monde c. 1955 63 h x 45.75 w in (160 x 116 cm) From left to right, we see the flags of Germany, England, Belgium, France, likely Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Italy. The knot is made with the flags of Belgium, France, and probably Luxembourg. It appears that Colin is referring to the European fathers who were united, along with Churchill, in the early '50s to initiate an association between European countries. The mention of the peace dove is probably a reference to Picasso's 1949 poster for the Congress of Peace. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 164 - Paul Colin, Journees Francaises / Bruxelles

Paul Colin Journees Francaises / Bruxelles 63 h x 47 w in (160 x 119 cm) The ties that bind are, in this case, two ropes—one with French colors and one with Belgian colors—to announce a French festival in Brussels. Affiches Marci, Bruxelles Literature: PAI-X, 204 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 165 - Paul Colin, Croisade

Paul Colin Croisade 1963 23.375 h x 15.875 w in (59 x 40 cm) This public service announcement encourages the French people to be polite, kind, courteous, affable, and helpful. A list of do's and don'ts at bottom helps delineate the good behavior expected by readers of the poster. Imp. GEF, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 166 - Paul Colin, Paris / Madrid

Paul Colin Paris / Madrid 1939 61.375 h x 44.75 w in (156 x 114 cm) "On March 28, 1939, Franco captured Madrid, ending three years of civil war in Spain but leaving a ravaged city. This poster suggests that Spain's suffering may have been a prelude to a more general war, which indeed happened a few months later" (Colin Affichiste, p. 112). Arrington, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 154 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 167 - Paul Colin, L'Espagne Republicaine

Paul Colin L'Espagne Republicaine c. 1937 47.125 h x 31.625 w in (120 x 80 cm) "This is a subscription in favor of the victims of the Spanish Civil War which began in 1936. The insurgents, led by Francisco Franco, were supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy while most of the rest of Europe supported the republican regime of President Manuel Azana" (Colin Affichiste, p. 112). Imp. Curial-Archereau, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 156 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 168 - Paul Colin, Le Parti Socialiste

Paul Colin Le Parti Socialiste 45.125 h x 30.25 w in (115 x 77 cm) Colin's design for the French Socialist party—the driving force behind the 5th Republic—is a paradigm of restraint and efficiency. Marianne serves as the figurehead of the French political galleon; its forward progress is decisively indicated with three scarlet on blue arrows. There can be little doubt that all concerned parties were sure of their cause, both artistic and political. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: PAI-XXXIV, 345 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 169 - Paul Colin, Semaine Internationale de Solidarite

Paul Colin Semaine Internationale de Solidarite 46.75 h x 30.875 w in (119 x 78 cm) "In the two years following the war, there were an extraordinary number of international congresses, meetings, and workshops to ensure that humanity would never again engage in such senseless carnage. This poster announced one of these demonstrations" (Colin Affichiste, p. 102). Imp. Schuster, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 133 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 170 - Paul Colin, La Dette

Paul Colin La Dette 63.375 h x 47.5 w in (161 x 121 cm) Man's inhumanity to man, whether it manifests itself through barbaric practice or stark indifference, is far more gruesome than the tortured Colin torso seen here. And yet, this compromised vision of the human body doesn't fail to strike a visceral thematic chord for those upon which tragedy has fallen. In short, Colin's national debt-relief appeal for the tragedy stricken performs its function admirably. Imp. Crete, Corbeil Literature: PAI-XCI, 223 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 171 - Paul Colin, Donnez Votre Sang

Paul Colin Donnez Votre Sang 23.25 h x 15.625 w in (59 x 40 cm) A pigeon swoops down to help her ailing companion in this plea to donate blood. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 172 - Paul Colin, Prenatal

Paul Colin Prenatal 61 h x 44.875 w in (155 x 114 cm) This discreet design for prenatal care is apparently one of Colin's later efforts, undocumented in any catalogue of his works that we know of. Both the subject matter and the sophistication of the design point to a more modern period: definitely post-World War II, and possibly 1960s. Publicis, Paris Literature: PAI-XXV, 277 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 173 - Paul Colin, Femmes Francaises

Paul Colin Femmes Francaises 1946 61.75 h x 44.75 w in (157 x 114 cm) Formed in 1945, Femmes solidaires (Women in solidarity) continues their work today defending and advancing women's rights, gender equality, and solidarity. Here, Colin shows the building blocks of life coming together with a family celebrating their newborn. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 174 - Paul Colin, Femmes de Prisonniers

Paul Colin Femmes de Prisonniers 63.5 h x 46.75 w in (161 x 119 cm) "This poster was an announcement made by the Association of Prison Soldiers' Wives in Germany" (Colin Affichiste, p. 114). Literature: Colin Affichiste, 158 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 175 - Paul Colin, Journees de la Paix

Paul Colin Journees de la Paix 1938 63.125 h x 45.75 w in (160 x 116 cm) On behalf of Spanish children suffering during the Civil War, Colin created this appeal to French mothers to send donations abroad. Imp. Sp. du Rassemblement This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 176 - Paul Colin, Loterie Nationale

Paul Colin Loterie Nationale c. 1940 60.875 h x 44.75 w in (155 x 114 cm) A punch of fresh air, a blur of the grass, and a burst of l'amour attend to the lucky winners of the French National Lottery. This is one of three designs Colin created for the lottery. Peculiar to France and Ireland, its winners were determined by the results of various horse races. P.P.P.P., Paris Literature: PAI-LXXII, 188 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 177 - Paul Colin, Loterie Nationale / Grand Prix de Paris

Paul Colin Loterie Nationale / Grand Prix de Paris 1966 117.75 h x 78.25 w in (299 x 199 cm) This is the larger, four-sheet variant of the following design. Jean Laurance, Paris Literature: PAI-XCIII, 224 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 178 - Paul Colin, Loterie Nationale / Grand Prix de Paris

Paul Colin Loterie Nationale / Grand Prix de Paris 1966 61.5 h x 45.25 w in (156 x 115 cm) This is one of three designs by Colin for the French national lottery, which was connected with horse racing in a similar manner to that of the Irish Sweepstakes (i.e. the winner was determined based on the outcome of various horse races). Here, we embrace the true power of the track, as the horse and jockey fly past us in an earth-toned blur. Jean Laurance, Paris Literature: PAI-XCIII, 224 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 179 - Paul Colin, L'Ordre

Paul Colin L'Ordre 1938 115.125 h x 74.875 w in (292 x 190 cm) This four-sheet design promotes the political journal L'Ordre, of which The New York Times wrote, "There is considerable comment... about L'Ordre, which was born on Dec. 24, the night before Christmas. This is principally due to the fact that its director is one of the most famous journalists in France, Emil Bure, who once made the old Eclair a success. In his prospectus he shows that he will seek for support among those Frenchmen who have no use for the political combination of Radicals and Socialists known as the 'Cartel.' M. Bure, who was a keen disciple of the late Georges Clemenceau, is believed by many to have inherited from the dead 'Tiger,' at least the journalistic part of his skin, for in his prospectus he writes: 'Disorder reigns at the present time, hence a choice must be made and be made quickly: either let us have Fascism or Bolshevism. Either would bring us tranquility. Above all things let us have order. This means liberty, security, prosperity.' M. Bure was among the last to see Clemenceau alive, and the 'Tiger' is reported to have approved of the title of the paper and to have promised to write for it" (January 12, 1930, p. 61). Imp. Andre Ruffenach, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 180 - Paul Colin, Paris-soir / La Pegre des Tropiques

Paul Colin Paris-soir / La Pegre des Tropiques 63 h x 46.875 w in (160 x 119 cm) This haunting image promotes the serialization of "The Underworld of the Tropics," which the text here tells us is a "gripping documentary on the escapees from the penal colony," available to read in the Paris-soir. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 181 - Paul Colin, La Volonte

Paul Colin La Volonte 61.75 h x 45.75 w in (157 x 116 cm) A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and Colin illustrates this masterfully in his poster for La Volonte, a daily publication of the political left under the direction of Albert Duberry, whose title translates literally to "Willpower." It's a dark and ingenious design. Imp. Hachard, Paris Literature: PAI-XXVIII, 271 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 182 - Paul Colin, Eve / Le Journal Ideal de la Femme

Paul Colin Eve / Le Journal Ideal de la Femme 61.5 h x 43.75 w in (156 x 111 cm) Colin puts his Art Deco geometries to use in this sharp design for a woman's magazine that promises to be "the most elegant, the most lively, the least expensive." Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 183 - Paul Colin, Temps Present

Paul Colin Temps Present 1948 46 h x 30 w in (117 x 76 cm) Out with the old, in with the new. Colin uses a dual bust image to promote Present Tense, a magazine published by the French Friendship Society, with the toppled, lifeless head of outdated thinking utilized to contrast the flushed, progressive vision of a more amicable tomorrow. The artist was so pleased with the clarity of this concept that it became a thematic variation that he would rely upon once more in 1948 in order to call the public's attention to the Global Intellectual Congress for Peace being held in Poland (see Colin/Affichiste, 145). Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin/Affichiste, 181; PAI-XLII, 251 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 184 - Paul Colin, Journees du Livre

Paul Colin Journees du Livre 1931 23.5 h x 15.5 w in (60 x 39 cm) Colin announces the annual French Book Week with a towering stack of literature that we're dying to dig into. Imp. Lucien Serre, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 185 - Paul Colin, La Vache Enragee

Paul Colin La Vache Enragee 1910 23.875 h x 33.25 w in (61 x 84 cm) At age 18, Colin opened his first studio in Nancy, and with two of his comrades, Jean Larcat and Paul Klinger, he founded a satiric review, La Vache Enragee, for which he created his first poster. It apparently lasted only one edition. Colin was subsequently enlisted in France's World War I effort. Imp. Schilhaneck, Nancy This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 186 - Paul Colin, Musee d'Ethnographie

Paul Colin Musee d'Ethnographie 1930 46.375 h x 30.75 w in (118 x 78 cm) "In the past two years a great current of sympathy and interest in ethnography has arisen in France," this museum declared in its Bulletin as it opened new rooms—the occasion for which Colin created this poster. To his powerful, brooding image of an Easter Island menhir belonging to the museum, Colin added a mask from his own collection, lending a not unfitting touch of comic theatricality: after all, the Trocadero housed both the Ethnographic Museum and the Theatre Nationale Populaire—much as Colin's own interests embraced both popular entertainment and "serious" culture. "Colin immediately saw the potential in such singular forms, and reinforced it in the play of planes and by representing the head in profile and the mask face-on" (Affiche Reclame, p. 140). Imp. Joseph Charles, Paris Literature: PAI-XC, 231 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 187 - Paul Colin, Ch. Gir

Paul Colin Ch. Gir 1927 62.75 h x 47 w in (159 x 119 cm) This poster was created for an exhibit of works by Charles Gir, a painter and occasional posterist. Colin depicts his friend in silhouette, framed against a large pink and white canvas of a ballerina, and signs it, "To my friend Gir." This is the larger format. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 115; PAI-XCII, 191 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Dante n'Avait Rien Vu : Maquette 1924 20 h x 24 w in (51 x 61 cm) We're not entirely sure what Colin's aim was in creating this bustling collage of Paris at nighttime, but it is an enjoyable tour of the city, featuring the Eiffel Tower, the Stock Exchange, the House of Representatives, art, dancing, jazz music, and an intimidating bartender. The artist has signed a dedication to Flauve. Signed gouache, ink, and watercolor maquette. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 200 - Paul Colin, Exposition Paul Colin / Maison de la Pensee Francaise

Paul Colin Exposition Paul Colin / Maison de la Pensee Francaise 23.5 h x 16 w in (60 x 41 cm) Although little information exists on the "House of French Thought," the gallery exhibited such prominent artists as Picasso and Matisse, and Colin's self-promotion takes a more refined approach to match the caliber of the gallery's roster. Imp. Mourlot, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 201 - Paul Colin, Paul Colin / Galerie La Boetie

Paul Colin Paul Colin / Galerie La Boetie 23.625 h x 15.625 w in (60 x 40 cm) If we didn't know any better, we might assume that this poster was created during the height of 1980s Pop Art, when blocks of neon color were all the rage. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Paul Colin / Galerie La Boetie 23.625 h x 15.75 w in (60 x 40 cm) This is a slightly different printing from the previous poster. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Exposition de l'Affiche : Maquette 1947 11 h x 8.25 w in (28 x 21 cm) For a poster exhibition, Colin has some fun with optical illusions, as a sheet of paper is unfurled to form a poster lover's head. Gouache and ink maquette. Exhibited: Exposition "l'Affiche", 1947, Pavillon de Marsan, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 205 - Paul Colin, Quinzaine Portugaise

Paul Colin Quinzaine Portugaise 1935 46.25 h x 30.875 w in (117 x 78 cm) This is a somewhat conflicting design for the anti-totalitarian Colin, who somehow wound up creating this advertisement for a Portuguese exposition in Geneva during the dictatorial reign of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. Apparently, Salazar had admirers in Switzerland, and thus the leader's personal friend and new state propagandist, Antonio Ferro, organized this event. Politics aside, Colin created a vibrant image that combines natural beauty with architecture and engineering. Rare! Imp. L. Serre, Paris Literature: PAI-XCI, 222 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 206 - Paul Colin, Salon des Artistes Decorateurs

Paul Colin Salon des Artistes Decorateurs 1949 23.75 h x 15.625 w in (60 x 40 cm) "This 1949 exhibition organized by Louis Touchagues at the Grand Palais included home decorators, but it represented mainly theater designers. The exhibit sought to be livelier than most such shows, and used dummies, reduced models of theaters, furniture and accessories. The imposition of the white plane in the background, and the back-to-back faces with the artisans' symbols, give a colorful presentation of the event" (Colin, p. 11). This is the smaller format version of the design. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 97; PAI-LXVII, 276 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 210 - Paul Colin, Hommage a Picasso

Paul Colin Hommage a Picasso 1951 26.25 h x 19.125 w in (67 x 49 cm) "J. R. Bloch and the film director Louis Daquin received the International Peace Prize. The Stockholm Appeal against Atomic Weapons was launched... and in June l'Humanite claimed that two thousand doctors and students of medicine, as well as fifteen professors from the College de France, had pledged their support. The first principle of utility (prestige) was much in evidence, with Joliot-Curie, Eluard, Picasso and Mme Cotton being assigned prominent positions in the Movement. Eluard sent a message to the 1951 Rome Congress: 'Guerre a la Grece a la Coree a l'Indochine / Guerre partout ou se revoltent les victimes...' [War on Greece, Korea, Indochina / War wherever the victims revolt]. Less obviously partisan were his lines accompanying a new series of drawings by Picasso, in which the face of a woman merged with the dove of peace: 'Je connais tous les lieux ou la colombe loge / Et le plus naturel est la tete de l'homme' [I know all the places where the dove lives / And the most natural is the head of man]" (Communism and the French Intellectuals, 1914-1960, by David Caute, p. 189). That referenced Picasso drawing is here used by Colin to announce an exhibition in Paris. Imp. Mourlot, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Congres des Jeunes 1920 46.5 h x 31 w in (118 x 79 cm) This rare design for a youth congress and exposition comes from the early days of Colin's career, before he hit his Deco stride at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees. He's used his daughter's image for the portrait here. This poster includes a hand-signed dedication to Marcel Corrette. Imp. Arts Graphiques, Nancy Literature: Colin/Magicien p. 53; PAI-XCI, 211 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 215 - Paul Colin, La Publicite de Demain

Paul Colin La Publicite de Demain 1946 92 h x 61.25 w in (234 x 156 cm) Colin was a natural choice to advertise an exhibition dedicated to the advertising of tomorrow, and his two-sheet design draws us right into the center of his creative vision. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 216 - Paul Colin, Festival Foire Saint-Germain

Paul Colin Festival Foire Saint-Germain 1980 24.5 h x 15.875 w in (62 x 40 cm) The Saint-Germain festival dates back to the 18th century, and has traditionally been held between February 3 and Palm Sunday. Lot: 217 - Paul Colin, Paris

Paul Colin Paris 30.5 h x 22.5 w in (77 x 57 cm) "Clean, smiling, flowery"—we're sure that's not how most people would describe Paris, but Colin is of course all too happy to create a complimentary design for his beloved city. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 218 - Paul Colin, Paris / Exposition Internationale

Paul Colin Paris / Exposition Internationale 1937 49.375 h x 33.75 w in (125 x 86 cm) What an exceptional time to host a World's Fair, and an intense time on both the national and international political levels: the birth of the Popular Front, the war in Spain, the rise of Nazism in Germany and fascism in Italy, not to mention the difficult years that followed after the stock exchange crisis of 1929. And yet to look at the Colin design for the fair, one would guess that the world was at peace, as an incredibly placid, nearly detached, yet passionate visual calling card puts a national visage to an international event. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 125; PAI-XXXV, 283 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 219 - Paul Colin, Paris / Exposition Internationale

Paul Colin Paris / Exposition Internationale 1937 49.625 h x 34 w in (126 x 86 cm) This is another copy of lot 218. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 125; PAI-XXXV, 283 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 221 - Paul Colin, Salon de Paris

Paul Colin Salon de Paris 1980 20.875 h x 15.75 w in (53 x 40 cm) This poster for the city's annual summer exhibition of paintings, music, and poetry caps a 55-year poster career by one of France's leading graphic artists. It is fitting that Paris should be the subject of his last work, for in his hundreds of posters from 1925 to 1980, Colin documented much of the city's art and history. Using primary colors with childlike simplicity, he floats puffs of clouds over a giant canvas that is as much a symbol of Paris as the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe. Lucien Auclair Literature: PAI-XX, 223 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 222 - Paul Colin, Exposition Internationale Urbanisme Habitation

Paul Colin Exposition Internationale Urbanisme Habitation 1947 23.125 h x 14.75 w in (59 x 37 cm) With the Second World War an incontestably fresh memory, the course of properly reconstructing a fractured French infrastructure was a top priority for the Fourth Republic. To that end, the Minister of Reconstruction and Urbanism sponsored the forward-thinking International Exposition of Urban Planning and Dwelling. Colin's poster, though not nearly as fractal as many of the artist's designs, presents an architectural behemoth, creating a new urban landscape from the puzzle-piece fragments that surround him on his free-floating green space. It's somewhat surreal, yet totally applicable to the subject at hand. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: PAI-XXXVIII, 299 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 223 - Paul Colin, Exposition Nancy

Paul Colin Exposition Nancy 1928 31.5 h x 23.875 w in (80 x 61 cm) One of Colin's most straightforward designs, this poster announces the annual Nancy Exposition, focusing on the agricultural, commercial, and artisan-based economies of the area. Creation Hachard, Paris Literature: PAI-LXIX, 331 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 224 - Paul Colin, Foire Exposition Nancy

Paul Colin Foire Exposition Nancy 1929 46.75 h x 30.625 w in (119 x 78 cm) A trade fair in Nancy gets a mechanically inspired design by Colin that uses a very Deco typeface and sharp geometric lines. Affiches Arts Graphiques, Nancy This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 225 - Paul Colin, Exposition des Techniques Americaines

Paul Colin Exposition des Techniques Americaines 1946 62.25 h x 45.125 w in (158 x 115 cm) "This exhibition praised the rapid production methods of American industry, in particular the rise of prefabricated housing which completely changed the way of life in American suburbs. Of course, not everyone was ready to be Americanized: it is said that it was this exposure that pushed Jacques Tati to make his first comedy 'Jour de fete' (1949), in which he showed what would happen if the people tried to apply American techniques in their little village" (Colin Affichiste, p. 104). Literature: Colin Affichiste, 136 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 226 - Paul Colin, Juegos Universitarios

Paul Colin Juegos Universitarios 1947 46.75 h x 30.625 w in (119 x 78 cm) The University Games are akin to the Olympics for college students; a wide variety of sports are offered to the large international community. This edition, hosted in France, was certainly seen as an opportunity for unity in the wake of World War II. U.N.E.F., Paris Literature: Colin, 102 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 227 - Paul Colin, La Vie Parisienne

Paul Colin La Vie Parisienne 1962 27 h x 19.25 w in (69 x 49 cm) The Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore has been home to many top French fashion houses and brands: Faberge, Chanel, Lanvin, Hermes, and Pierre Cardin—and not to mention the boutique hotels and embassies located on this narrow street. Colin advertises the fashions available with two chic Parisians strutting their stuff. Imp. Mourlot, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 228 - Paul Colin, Peugeot

Paul Colin Peugeot 1935 62.5 h x 46.5 w in (159 x 118 cm) Stately poplars lining country roads like green sentinels are commonplace in France, and Colin makes them appear to bend and sway to the swift passage of the car zipping past them. Does it give us any technical information about Peugeot? No, but we can practically hear the rustle of the leaves stirred up in the car's wake, and that's a much more effective way to convince us of the car's merits. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: PAI-XLIV, 209 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 229 - Paul Colin, Faites Regler vos Phares

Paul Colin Faites Regler vos Phares 45.875 h x 30.25 w in (117 x 77 cm) This is one of several posters Colin created as public service messages. To promote headlight checkups for the French bureau of accident insurance, he gives us a heedless country cyclist picked out in the darkness by a car's oncoming brights; even the lettering seems to be illuminated by the vehicle's beams. With its central halo of light emanating from a black background, the succinct design recalls Colin's masterful poster for Leroy Opticians (see PAI-XCII, 192). Bore de Loisy, Paris Literature: PAI-LXXXVI,250 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 230 - Paul Colin, Dunlop

Paul Colin Dunlop c. 1945 46.5 h x 31 w in (118 x 79 cm) Colin gives us a juggling act for the atomic age. Far from the environs of the music hall, he presents a hubristic molten man heaving four Dunlop tires skyward without so much as breaking a sweat. And if a character such as this fiery juggler can handle these tires without leaving a mark, just imagine how they will perform under normal driving conditions. This is the larger format. P.P.P.P., Paris Literature: PAI-XC, 46 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 231 - Paul Colin, Noel

Paul Colin Noel c. 1940 60.75 h x 45.125 w in (154 x 115 cm) We don't know much about the house painter named Noel, but he sure did receive a ravishing promotion from Colin: suspended by the clouds, he is held aloft as he valiantly paints the city. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 232 - Paul Colin, Nestor Martin

Paul Colin Nestor Martin 56 h x 76 w in (142 x 193 cm) Although best known for his dramatic theatrical and music portraits, Colin also created a number of posters for commercial products. Here, he gives us a striking image for the Nestor Martin factory. A radiant ball of fire casts its glow on the stylized steel furnaces that take on the appearance of factory towers—symbols of the company's solidity as well as the heat-producing stoves and radiators that come off the production line. The same image, with the title changed to Arthur Martin and a single stove at center, was also created. Creation Risacher Literature: PAI-LXXXVIII, 293 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 233 - Paul Colin, Le Nouveau-Ne

Paul Colin Le Nouveau-Ne 61.375 h x 44.25 w in (156 x 112 cm) For a Parisian baby store, Colin created a sensitive design showing a flower about to bloom among the stylish accessories for a newborn. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 235 - Paul Colin, Vittelloise

Paul Colin Vittelloise 61 h x 45.125 w in (155 x 115 cm) For a sparkling water that sings and dances, Colin shows a couple enjoying the beverage at a sidewalk cafe—although the gentleman seems to be more absorbed with his water than with his companion. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 236 - Paul Colin, Vichy

Paul Colin Vichy 1948 63.125 h x 46.625 w in (160 x 118 cm) Colin brings us the water cycle, Vichy-style: during lunch at work, at the cafe, or simply relaxing at home. It's a fascinating visual style, as well, for Colin: a slow metamorphosis from Modernism into mid-century aesthetics following the war. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 106; PAI-XCIII, 223 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 237 - Paul Colin, Sic

Paul Colin Sic 61.375 h x 45 w in (156 x 114 cm) "Finally," declares this lemon Casanova to his equally un-pealed orange escort, "a refreshing drink." The beverage in question, of course, is Sic: the carbonated soft drink infused with genuine juice, which in turn makes this one of the most flirtatiously fruity beverage posters ever to rind its way into one of our auctions. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: PAI-XLII, 253 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 238 - Paul Colin, Liqueur Izarra

Paul Colin Liqueur Izarra 1930 46 h x 30.5 w in (117 x 77 cm) Flanked by a Basque dancer and flamenco artist, this bottle of Liqueur Izarra is unmistakably Spanish. The beverage itself is almond in flavor, and is known as "the sun and the snow of the Pyrenees." This is a two-sheet poster. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin, 103; Colin Affichiste, 184; PAI-LXXIV, 272 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 239 - Paul Colin, G. Marconi

Paul Colin G. Marconi 61.875 h x 44.75 w in (157 x 114 cm) Known as the father of radio, Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) is best known for his creation of a practical radio wave-based wireless telegraph system. Colin heralds the inventor with this reverential promotion. Imp. Bedos, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 240 - Paul Colin, La Constipation : Maquette

Paul Colin La Constipation : Maquette 46 h x 30.75 w in (117 x 78 cm) "One of the basic differences between Cassandre and Colin has to do with subject matter: Cassandre produced posters mainly for commercial products and services—railroads, steamships, wines, beers, automobiles—while Colin produced largely performing arts and patriotic posters; but not, as is seen here, to the exclusion of the commercial poster. In fact, Colin created many more of these... because they are less unique and spectacular than the others, we tend to overlook them. There is something droll about this woman, so obviously luxuriating in her full relief, holding her little box of Pilules Dupuis which so effortlessly conquered her constipation" (Colin, p. 11). Signed gouache maquette. Literature: Colin, 88 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 241 - Paul Colin, Savon Palmolive

Paul Colin Savon Palmolive 46.875 h x 30.5 w in (119 x 77 cm) Even mermaids need a bath every now and then, and luckily Palmolive soap has come to the rescue. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 242 - Paul Colin, Washing Machine : Maquette

Paul Colin Washing Machine : Maquette 38.75 h x 27.75 w in (98 x 70 cm) The purpose of this creative exercise is unknown to us, but Colin was apparently in the throes of a commission for a washing machine, and he invented a quirky monocled man to introduce us to the product. Most likely, Bosch was the intended client. Signed watercolor, gouache, and ink maquette. This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 243 - Paul Colin, Bosch

Paul Colin Bosch 1963 62 h x 46 w in (157 x 117 cm) Colin celebrates Bosch's top sales record in Europe with a tuxedoed man offering up an award to the winningest refrigerator. Affiches Gaillard, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 244 - Paul Colin, TAC

Paul Colin TAC 63.125 h x 45.875 w in (160 x 117 cm) Not one to frequently venture into the animal kingdom, Colin recruits this dirty bird to advertise the easy, fast cleaning power of Tac detergent which washes everything, including the little goose who lets loose with a celebratory "Finally... clean!" It's simply delightful—and rare! Grizeaud, Paris Literature: PAI-XXVIII, 275 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 245 - Paul Colin, L'Age des Plastiques : Maquette

Paul Colin L'Age des Plastiques : Maquette 1947 15 h x 11 w in (38 x 28 cm) This maquette was created to advertise an exhibition titled "The Age of Plastic," held at the headquarters of the chemical industry in Paris. The uncanny image presents the material as a wonder to behold, and equates it to organic matter. Unfortunately, the world had no idea how much damage this new material would wreck on our environment. Gouache maquette on board. Exhibited: 1947, Palais de la Defense, Paris Literature: PAI-LXXXV, 269 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 246 - Paul Colin, Balto Cigarettes

Paul Colin Balto Cigarettes 1938 22.625 h x 15 w in (57 x 38 cm) We're not exactly sure what comparison Colin had in mind when he paired a pack of cigarettes with a regal galleon ship, but suffice it to say that our curiosity has been piqued. Imp. Berger-Levrault, Paris This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 247 - Paul Colin, Electricite de France / Meilleur Reseau

Paul Colin Electricite de France / Meilleur Reseau c. 1970 60.5 h x 45.125 w in (154 x 115 cm) In America, ads for utilities are, well, utilitarian at best. France prefers artistic illumination. Enter Paul Colin. It's a simple request: public financing for a better electrical distribution network. Underneath the ask, however, is a conundrum of wicked complexity. By 1970, coal was declining in favor of cheap oil. Oil, though, was subject to shocks and embargoes. Nuclear power was a third answer, but violent public opposition meant treading delicately upon the subject. Research had begun on French renewables, but the efficiencies just weren't there. Colin's composition addresses the complexity of energy, while avoiding it altogether. He places the funding request in one (quite Picasso-esque) hand, and magic sparks fly out the other end in a tangle of wires and cords roping themselves into a human shape—as if to say, We're all electric, in what amounts to a social funding of public infrastructure. This is the larger format. Editions du Belier Literature: PAI-LXXII, 195 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 249 - Paul Colin, Electricite de France / Emprunt

Paul Colin Electricite de France / Emprunt c. 1970 31 h x 23.625 w in (79 x 60 cm) "This loan poster by Electricite de France—to raise money for the construction of a hydro-electric dam—is an unusual one: it is the only Colin poster which I have seen in which the artist used the photomontage technique. This method, quite feasible with offset lithography, has been used with little frequency and less imagination today. But here it is quite effective, as Colin plugs into a photo of the dam in construction. The message is presented with clarity and force; it works well" (Colin, p. 11). Le Belier, Paris Literature: Colin, 95 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 250 - Paul Colin, Electricite de France / Parts de Production

Paul Colin Electricite de France / Parts de Production 1953 31.5 h x 22.625 w in (80 x 57 cm) The mark of a superior artist is the ability to transform (what many may call) boring subjects into beautiful, captivating things. A perfect example: Paul Colin's poster for a humble electrical parts convention. Colin retrieves the original magic from mankind's first flirtations with electric power, and fashions a fluorescent tube as a wand, and an incandescent bulb as a magic hat—all controlled by an invisible magician in the background. In doing so, Colin actually anticipates (by 20 years) Arthur C. Clarke's 1973 thought, Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Consider that the next time you give your electrician a call. Literature: PAI-LXXII, 193 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 251 - Paul Colin, Electricite de France / Emprunt

Paul Colin Electricite de France / Emprunt 1957 45.875 h x 30.25 w in (117 x 77 cm) Of the five Colin images for the French electrical utility featured here, this is simultaneously the most simple and the most enigmatic. The French Rooster, in an outline of flame, further contains the iridescent blue slash of a gas flame, in a solicitation for bonds to bolster and extend the French energy grid. Le Belier, Paris Literature: PAI-LXXII, 194 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Here, the somber ship cleaving the shimmering waters is seen sailing through a transparent drape consisting of the French colors, a delightful way to remind [the viewer] of the nationality of this transport company" (Colin Affichiste, p. 132). Editions Transatlantique Literature: Colin Affichiste, 186; PAI-LXII, 14 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Salon de l'Aviation 1949 24.25 h x 15.75 w in (62 x 40 cm) Three years after his excellent design for the 1946 event (see following lot), Colin conceived another brilliant work for the 18th Parisian International Air Show, anticipating both the passenger-jet revolution and the Space Age. This is the rare, small format version of the poster. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 144; PAI-LXXIV, 72 (var) This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 258 - Paul Colin, Salon International de l'Aviation

Paul Colin Salon International de l'Aviation 1946 61.5 h x 44.5 w in (156 x 113 cm) A fuselage flies the flags of the world, announcing that the entire aviation world will be represented at the 17th International Air Show in Paris. The design displays the two vital elements of Colin's genius: his delight in the "graphicness" of the simple message in a visually surprising and engaging way. In that regard, he is the editorial illustrator-laureate of this century. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 134; PAI-XXVII, 74 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 259 - Paul Colin, TWA

Paul Colin TWA c. 1948 39.25 h x 24.5 w in (100 x 62 cm) This incredibly rare poster by Colin leaves behind his signature Deco style of the Parisian Jazz Age in favor of a more Modern, straightforward composition for TWA. Lot: 260 - Paul Colin, Aerolineas Argentinas

Paul Colin Aerolineas Argentinas c. 1950 39.25 h x 24.25 w in (100 x 62 cm) Colin's poster for Aerolineas Argentinas positions its logo in fiery tones against the silhouette of a Douglass DC-6. Below, a simplified map of the company's various routes takes us from Amsterdam to Santiago. The airline continues to fly today; it has had an interesting route from state-owned concern to privatization and back again. Imp. Bedos, Paris Literature: PAI-LXXI, 310 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 261 - Paul Colin, S.N.C.F

Paul Colin S.N.C.F 1947 39.125 h x 24.375 w in (99 x 62 cm) Silhouettes of an engineer and a conductor set against a never-ending sea of train tracks result in a powerful Deco design. "The whole impression which the French Railways tried to convey here, and which the graphics reinforce so directly, is that of strength, stability, and safety—all important elements of 'A Public Service at the Service of the Public'" (Colin, p. 12). The apparent simplicity of the art and tag line belie a complex political reality in postwar France: consolidating the welfare state while mollifying the right wing and marginalizing the Communist Party. In this context, Colin's design is superb: the conductor in blue, a worker in red, and a multitude of tracks stretching to the horizon: an assembly of roles with a common goal. De Plas, Paris Literature: Colin Affichiste, 182; PAI-LXXXVIII, 292 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 262 - Paul Colin, Afrique

Paul Colin Afrique c. 1948 39.125 h x 24.25 w in (99 x 62 cm) This imaginative design invites the viewer to a group of wildlife preserves in what was then French West Africa and is now, among other countries, Benin. The outline of a giraffe is filled with silhouettes that simultaneously evoke local sights and suggest the animal's distinctive splotches. The background has all the hues of sunset from the last orange glow at top to blue-green shadows at bottom. The image was also used with different text to promote visits to the region's wildlife parks. Editions Diloutremer, Paris Literature: PAI-XXXI, 404 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Paul Colin Air France / Afrique 1956 39.375 h x 24.625 w in (100 x 63 cm) Paul Colin presents an Air France poster of great beauty, simplicity, and subtle wit. A herd of elephants strides in silhouette; a pride of lions lounges in the grass; and a musk ox, deliberately blurred in the foreground like a photo bomb, seems to ask you, Well, how about it then? Two tickets to Nairobi maintenant, s'il vous plait. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: PAI-XXVIII, 272 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Lot: 264 - Paul Colin, Vichy

Paul Colin Vichy 1948 39 h x 24.5 w in (99 x 62 cm) "Having developed a bad reputation during the Second World War as the seat of the collaborationist government, the city of Vichy, once the war was over, tried to regain its reputation as a pleasant, quiet spa, famous worldwide for its mineral water. Colin's helter-skelter montage evokes all of its pleasures" (Colin Affichiste, p. 130). Imp. Wallon, France Literature: Colin Affichiste,183; PAI-XLIV, 211 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.
