Under bamboo trees, the tiger with its head turned over the shoulder and upward to the dragon above with its jaw opened, the tail extending from the ridged spine; the dragon with an opened jaw revealing the tongue, the snake-form body flows among auspicious clouds, and the head is applied with elaborate horns, spines, and whiskers. Perfectly fitted with six interior drawers that feature chrysanthemums over two hinged doors, raised on a bracket-footed base with aprons of floral scrolls and scalloped clouds. A Tibetan or Bhutanese Thangka of Amithaba With a stenciled silk veil, the central Tathagata seated on a colorful lotus throne with a cup and jewel in his hands, surrounded by a spiritual entourage including three red-capped lamas below, probably Kagyu, the central figure possibly Ngawang Namgyal (15941651); silk mounts. Note: Ngawang Namgyal, known as 'The Bearded Lama', was a Tibetan Rinpoche of the Drukpa Kagyu sect who unified Bhutan as a state in the 1630s. Contested as the reincarnated throne holder of the Drukpa lineage, in 1616, facing arrest through a series of intrigues, Ngawang Namgyal left Tibet for Bhutan, and during his time there until his death in the mid-17th century, he was able to consolidate power and establish Bhutan as an independent entity. Note: For an example of a figure with a similar sampot with an overhanging flap and double-fishtail sash, dated tentatively to circa 978-1010, see the example in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, accession #1991.131.
