101 - William Lyon 4th (1801-1859) & Lady CT Portraits 3 Painted portraits of William Lyon the 4th and possibly his wife or daughter. 14 & 17" tall each approx. Beautiful frames with period nails. Writing on back of William's portrait. One portrait is missing the wood back, shown separately. 15 x 17" Biography of William Lyon, 4th (1801-1859) The progenitor of the Lyon family in Connecticut was William Lyon, born in 1675, who when fourteen years of age, came with an uncle to Woodstock and settled on the homestead farm now owned by Mrs. William Lyon and Mrs. Emma Lyon Frink. William Lyon, his eldest son, born in 1700, was the father of eight children, of whom Elijah, born in 1727, had among his children a son William, born November 11th, 1778, who was the father of William 4th, the subject of this biography, born October 7th, 1801. His birthplace was the homestead farm, which has passed by inheritance into the hands the eldest son in the successive generations of the family since it was first acquired. Mr. Lyon received a common school education and was early made familiar with the details of a farmer’s life by his father, with the hope that he would succeed to his calling. The bent of his son’s mind lay in the direction of a trade, and the skill with which he, unaided, erected the frame and built a barn on the farm, decided his fate as a carpenter and master builder. This trade he followed with great success for many years, his services having been in general demand in both town and county. On the 31st of October, 1832, when thirty-one years of age, he married Harriet, daughter of Benjamin Green, of Thompson. Their Children are a daughter Emma, Mrs. Frink, and a son Origen, who entered the army during the late war, was in several engagements and died from disease contracted during his period of service. William Lyon on his marriage built and removed to the dwelling now occupied by Marquis Green, where for fourteen years he resided. He then returned to the homestead, where his death occurred February 9th, 1859. He was actively interested in the political issues of the day, and as a whig was elected to the legislature and to various important offices in the town. He possessed mature judgment, a fund of strong common sense, and was highly esteemed as an influential citizen. In early years Mr. Lyon united with the Baptist church, of what was known as Quasset.

Elgin Silver Plate Co (which produced casket trimmings) was acquired by Western Casket Hardware Co, in 1903. Shortly thereafter, Western started making caskets. In 1939, the name was changed to Elgin Metal Casket Co. This advertising paperweight / salesman sample was subsequently produced between those dates. The Elgin Metal Casket Company was the resting place for many well known Americans. Former President Calvin Coolidge was interred in one in Plymouth Notch Cemetery in North Hampton, Massachusetts. The body of John F. Kennedy was transported from Dallas to Washington in an Elgin casket after his assassination in 1963.

244 - Jack Daniels Belle of Lincoln Sealed in Box & Tag Must be 21 years or older to bid on this item. Selling the very collectible decanter and not the contents though you will receive both as you see. Offered by the original owner purchased ca 1979. Original box, tag and seal. Probably displayed and possibly stored on it's side, as for cork and stain to seal. The seal while intact, is separated at the bottle area. Wear to the box, rusty staples to the hang tag. 1.75 Litre, 90 Proof. The story surrounding the Belle of Lincoln is on the original hang tag that accompanies this bottle. The bottle can apparently be registered at the distillery. Prior to 1871, Lynchburg and Moore were part of a larger county called Lincoln. The Belle of Lincoln was one of the earliest bottlings by Jack Daniels, with much speculation over whom the "Belle" of Lincoln was. Many women came forth claiming to be Belle following Jack Daniels death, but the real identity remains a mystery. This 1979 expression is a reproduction of that famous bottling.

246 - Kathodian Bronze Works KBW Statue Bookends 1910's Kathodian Bronze Works Nude Statue Bookends. Signed KBW, Art Bronze. Kathodian Bronze Works (KBW) was active in New York City from about 1900 to about 1916, located on 501 Fifth Ave in New York City, thus making this a particularly rare find. Bronze clad, 7" tall. KBW produced bronze BOOK ROCKS (bookends), generally in Victorian style, by the electroform method, usually marked KBW or ARTBRONZ. Each bookend was clearly a work of art and pleasing to see, but this foundry did not stand out for artistic conception alone. As can be seen in the advertisement below, KBW Book Rocks were carried in fashionable stores all across the United States and its territories, from Boston to Hawaii. In fact, Gustave Stickley, icon of the early Arts and Crafts movement in America, chose to retail KBW Book Rocks in his New York City furniture shop, The Craftsman.

Offices, a truck scale, garages and a concrete batch plant were there. They delivered milk, coal and ice, provided ready mix concrete and did general contracting work. The company was established by John Booth, an Irish immigrant who came to the United States in 1885. Booth died in January 1930. These are the typical blue and white Booth signs that could be seen at the time. 30 x 8" each in condition as shown. I have not cleaned the backs. One other Booth sign is offered in this sale. These are the last of them.

Displayed in case, 17 1/2 x 10 1/4" These ‘dolls’ are believed to represent human beings, rather than supernatural beings (such as gods or spirits) based on the details of their costume. These details also serve to show the gender of the ‘dolls’. For example, female ‘dolls’ have netted head cloths, whilst male ones have slings. An Uncertain Purpose: The function of the Chancay burial ‘dolls’ is unknown, and much speculation has been made regarding this subject. The fact that these ‘dolls’ have been found in graves adds another layer of complexity to this question...

297 - Vintage Figa Mano Carved Weighted Fist 6" Vintage carved wood Figa Mano left fist with silver metal nails and floral ring and bracelet on weighted balanced silver ball. The metal has a fig repousse. 6", can be cleaned better/polished. The Mano Figa is the gesture of the thumb protruded between the pointer finger and middle finger. This symbol has been used as a good luck charm throughout history in many cultures, originally dating back to the Etruscans in the 6th Century BCE. In Ancient Rome Mano meaning hand, and Fico or Figa meaning fig, represented "fig hand" or a slang term for female genitalia. The symbol has also been known to imitate heterosexual intercourse. In some cultures, the Mano Figa is the gesture equivalent to giving the middle finger. Some wear the Mano Figa as a good luck charm and an incantation to the Goddess as a call for fertility and virility. 307 - Silas Hoadley Plymouth CT Tall Case American Clock S. (Silas) Hoadley, Plymouth Connecticut American Tall Case Grandfather clock, early part 19th Century. With pendulum and weights, wooden face. Glass is broken, doors are detached, etc. 90" tall to finials, 17 3/4" wide. Silas Hoadley was born in Bethany, Connecticut, on January 31, 1786. He was the son of Ammi Hoadley and Amy (Thompson) Hoadley. He first apprenticed as a joiner to his uncle Calvin Hoadley. Along with Seth Thomas, he was hired in about 1808 by Eli Terry at the age of 21 to set up and work at Terry's Ireland factory. Shortly after Terry's Porter Contract was satisfied, he and Seth Thomas bought the factory from Terry. Thomas & Hoadley continued to make tall clock movements until 1813, when he purchased Thomas's business shares. He transitioned to shelf clocks, manufacturing movements of his own design. The "Upside down" style is one of the more unique examples. In the late 1830s, he transitioned to manufacturing brass movements. He retired in 1849 as a wealthy man. Silas Hoadly died on December 28, 1870, in Plymouth, Conn.
