The couple moved to New York, where she continued to work in paint and drawing, but her print-making activity dropped off and she began making sculptures in 1959. She died at home in 1963. A few hours later, her husband took an overdose of pills, laid down beside her and held her hand until he died. Richard Diebenkorn later said of the Quastlers that “neither my wife nor I can think of a couple we encountered more indivisible.” Concept Gallery wishes to express our appreciation to the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation for assisting us in the research of this drawing.

He joined the faculty at Carnegie Tech in 1930, where he would remain until his retirement in 1975. He married Helen Jewett in 1933. They had one daughter, Susan .Mr. Lepper was instrumental in establishing the first degree-granting School of Industrial Design at Carnegie Tech in 1934. It was the first of its kind in the country. Many people credit him with developing the academic discipline of Industrial Design. To ease the employment problems caused by the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration established the Federal Arts Project(1935-1943) to employ the nation's artists. During this time The Treasury Department also established two art programs in the 1930s; the Treasury Relief Art Project and the Section of Fine Arts. Mr. Lepper did two murals in post offices in Grayling, Michigan and Caldwell, Ohio for the Section of Fine Arts(1934-1943). He also painted a mural for the new Mineral Industries Building for West Virginia University during 1940-1942 which depicted the prevalent industries in West Virginia. This mural is one of the most important mural projects done in the tri-state area and arguably the most important mural in the Tri State Area. Lepper also pioneered the use of plastic acrylic resin and plastics in his sculpture. As an educator, he believed in letting students be independent thinkers and use their own creativity. He developed a curriculum within the School of Industrial Design that emphasized this independence in students. One class he taught was Individual and Social Analysis which was a two semester course begun in 1965. The first semester was the Oakland Project. The second semester was called the Retrospective As an Artist. During his tenure at Carnegie Mellon he was one of the most significant influences on Andy Warhol. The project Warhol generated for Lepper's class is one of Warhol's most important early works. Robert Lepper was very much influenced by the impact of the machine on society which is seen in his art work.

Provenance: from the estate of Robert (Bob) Hagenhofer (1923-2007), a graphic designer and environmental activist who worked with Warhol in the Will Burton design studio from 1952-1953. Born in Chicago, he served in WW II and then graduated from the Chicago Institute of Design. He then moved to Staten Island in 1952 where he continued his graphic design work and later became active as an environmentalist in response to Robert Moses' attempt to build a highway through the Staten Island Greenbelt. According to the Warhol Museum website: Warhol first experimented with blotted line while still a college student at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). He continued to craft this technique in his commercial work in New York City throughout the 1950s. Blotted line enabled Warhol to create a variety of illustrations along a similar theme. This type of production allowed him to bring multiple ideas to clients to increase the odds that one of his drawings would be chosen for the final advertisement. Warhol began by copying a line drawing in pencil on a piece of non-absorbent paper, such as tracing paper. Next, he hinged this piece of paper to a second sheet of more absorbent paper by taping their edges together on one side. With a fountain pen, Warhol inked over a small section of the drawn lines. He then transferred the ink onto the second sheet by folding along the hinge and lightly pressing or blotting the two papers together. The process resulted in the dotted, broken, and delicate lines that are characteristic of Warhol’s illustrations.

Lot: 279 - Todd White oil painting A Little Fling 2010

White, Todd (American, born 1969), A Little Fling, 2010, oil on canvas, 8 x 15 inches, signed with the artist's signature in a block, Provenance: Galerie D'Art de Francais, New Orleans, framed in a custom wood frame measuring 18.5 x 27.5 inches. From Marcus Ashley Gallery, Lake Tahoe: Todd White’s paintings are easily among the world’s most collectable. As an incredibly accomplished living artist, Todd White’s work is in great demand both in the U.S. and around the world. You could loosely classify his style as figurative impressionism, an interesting callback to his roots as a character artist in Hollywood animation. However, there’s very little to pigeonhole about Todd White. Every piece he paints is a meticulously thought-out creation, intended to convey a specific story. Indeed, he doesn’t pick up the brush until the idea for the piece is fully fleshed out in his mind.
