Lot: 57 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #97 Pansies

Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ) Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print. This modern re-print was created in the 1980's. 11" X 14". Redoute is unquestionably the best-known botanical illustrator of any era. The decorative appeal of his original engravings led to their modern reproduction, which in turn popularized Redoute's work in a way unique among botanical artists. Born into a family of artists in what is now Belgium, Redoute's talent was recognized & encouraged from an early age. Eventually, Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens & empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to the Empress Josephine & her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty works on natural history & archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redoute, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redoute provided.

Lot: 128 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #58 Iris

"There have been recorded in North America eight hundred distinct species of wild birds, and four hundred additional subspecies, or climatic varieties. This refers to the territory lying north of the Rio Grande. "When the present work on Birds of America was projected, we felt that the time was at last ripe for a new book on the subject that should be a final repository of all the vast treasure of scattered information. What was clearly needed, was to make a thorough canvass of the field and produce a work at once popular and scientific, and at the same time comprehensive -- a record of our wild birds. The official check list of the American Ornithologists' Union has been followed for classification. We have tried, in a word, to present a complete picture and story of our feathered wild bird life." ..T. Gilbert Pearson, President of the National Assoc. of Audubon Societies.

Lot: 298 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #137 Gloxinia

Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ). Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print.

Mnemosyne - The Memory Keeper color lithograph print. Measures 8"X10", printed on Kodak Professional ENDURA paper; matted in an acid free and lignin free 11"X14" mat and backing board. Signed by the artist and dated on the back. To the ancient Greeks, memory was a goddess residing in the heart. Mnemosyne was often contrasted to Lethe, the embodiment of forgetting. For instance at the oracular rituals of the seer Trophonius, initiates would be lowered into a cave symbolising the descent into the self or the underworld. As part of this journey it was important for them to cross the river of Lethe to forget their waking experiences so they might naturally descend into the depth of their inner world. However, when the initiates were pulled up from the cave, they were placed on the chair of Mnemosyne to help them remember. Mnemosyne is the aspect of memory that never forgets the soul’s experiences.

Reverse - a soldier spearing a fallen horseman. As he only reigned for three years, Gallus is the hardest to find of all the coins from the Constantinian ruling dynasty. Born in Etruria around A.D. 325 Gallus was a sickly child, saving him in A.D. 337 from the purges by the sons of Constantine I. By A.D. 351 Constantius II was ruling alone and needed support. He raised his cousin Gallus to the rank of Caesar, gave him the name Constantius and appointed him governor over the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. But Gallus was not fit for the job. He was so tyrannical and brutal that the local citizens were forced to complain directly to Constantius II to avoid retribution. Constantius recalled Gallus to Italy, had him arrested on the journey, tried and executed in A.D 354!

Lot: 561 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #24 Tickseed
