Lot: 2 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #35 Clove, Carnation, Christmas Rose

Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ) Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print. This modern re-print was created in the 1980's. 11" X 14". Redoute is unquestionably the best-known botanical illustrator of any era. The decorative appeal of his original engravings led to their modern reproduction, which in turn popularized Redoute's work in a way unique among botanical artists. Born into a family of artists in what is now Belgium, Redoute's talent was recognized & encouraged from an early age. Eventually, Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens & empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to the Empress Josephine & her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty works on natural history & archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redoute, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redoute provided.

This refers to the territory lying north of the Rio Grande. "When the present work on Birds of America was projected, we felt that the time was at last ripe for a new book on the subject that should be a final repository of all the vast treasure of scattered information. What was clearly needed, was to make a thorough canvass of the field and produce a work at once popular and scientific, and at the same time comprehensive -- a record of our wild birds. The official check list of the American Ornithologists' Union has been followed for classification. We have tried, in a word, to present a complete picture and story of our feathered wild bird life." ..T. Gilbert Pearson, President of the National Assoc. of Audubon Societies.

The scene showing a whaling fisherman standing in front of baleen or whalebone artifacts. 8" X 10" black & white photo, printed on photo paper in the late 1980s. Handwriting in ink on the front to identify the scene.  Baleen is a filter-feeding system inside the mouths of baleen whales. To use baleen, the whale first opens its mouth underwater to take in water. The whale then pushes the water out, and animals such as krill are filtered by the baleen and remain as a food source for the whale. Baleen is similar to bristles and consists of keratin, the same substance found in human fingernails, skin and hair. Baleen is a skin derivative. Some whales, such as the bowhead whale, have longer baleen than others. Other whales, such as the gray whale, only use one side of their baleen. These baleen bristles are arranged in plates across the upper jaw of whales. Depending on the species, a baleen plate can be  1 1/2 to 11 1/2 ft) long, and weigh up to 200 lb. Its hairy fringes are called baleen hair or whalebone hair. They are also called baleen bristles, which in sei whales are highly calcified, with calcification functioning to increase their stiffness. Baleen plates are broader at the gumline base. The plates have been compared to sieves or Venetian blinds. As a material for various human uses, baleen is usually called whalebone, which is a misnomer.

Lot: 189 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #54 Hibiscus

By birth, Zamacois was a Spaniard but by education he belongs to the French school, & was, in fact, a pupil of Meissonier. Although he usually selected subjects attuned to his racial feelings, he was nevertheless regarded in his native country as something of an alien. A past master of the craft of painting, he was essentially a man of wit—a satirist, a Thackeray who worked with the brush instead of with a pen. A " literary " painter par excellence, he probably equaled his master in his power of the brush & the resources of his art; and it might be added, had he possessed a sense of poetry equal in degree to his sense of humor, he might have taken his place among the first painters of this age.

Lot: 541 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #89 Oranges

Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ). Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print.

Photos courtesy of the New York State Museum. "There have been recorded in North America eight hundred distinct species of wild birds, and four hundred additional subspecies, or climatic varieties.
