Lot: 2489 - C. 1906 RAILROAD AND COUNTY MAP OF TEXAS

This large-scale map of Texas from the early 1900s shows the counties and railways of the state in great detail. Issued by the Texas Railroad Commission, it reflects the important role that the railways played in the early oil industry. This mural-scale map was intended to hang on the wall for consultation in depots, state offices, and the like. The survival rate for maps used in this way is quite low, and for an example to survive in such excellent condition is exceptional. Historically, the Texas Railroad Commission has been one of the most important regulatory bodies in the nation. For much of the twentieth century it strongly influenced the supply and price of oil and natural gas throughout the United States. As its name implies, the commission was originally established to oversee railroads. Its importance to the state and nation, however, has rested on its authority over the energy industry. In 1917 the state legislature granted the commission the authority to see that petroleum pipelines remained "common carriers"--that is, that they did not refuse to transport anyone's oil or gas. Two years later, commissioners received responsibility for promulgating well-spacing rules. In the early 1920s the agency accepted jurisdiction over gas utilities. This gradually growing responsibility prepared the way for the enormous expansion of commission activity during the next decade. In the early 1930s, unrestrained production from the huge East Texas oil field caused the price of crude to plummet worldwide. To stabilize oil prices and to help conserve the valuable resource, a coalition consisting of parts of the industry, scientists, and public officials attempted to have output regulated. After an involved, protracted, and occasionally violent political struggle, the Railroad Commission won the authority to prorate, that is, to set the rate at which every oil well in Texas might produce. By limiting production in East Texas and elsewhere, commissioners succeeded both in supporting oil prices and in conserving the state's resources. Under the Connally Hot Oil Act of 1935, the federal government undertook to enforce in interstate commerce the production directives of the Texas commission and its sister state agencies. When the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries was organized, the Railroad Commission was used as a model. Because of its ability to prorate Texas oil production and because of this state's crucial role in the petroleum industry, the Railroad Commission was until the early 1970s of vital importance to national and international energy supply. This map is a vivid illustration of the railway network overseen by the Railroad Commission in Texas, which played such a vital role in the EARLY development of the oil industry. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Condition: (Excellent) Item Dimensions: 54 - 1/2" x 2" x 50 - 1/2".

Lot: 2503 - LOT OF 2 MAPS: MEXICO, CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS & PART OF CURRIE DISTRICT, CORSICANA OIL & GAS FIELD, NAVARRO CITY TEXAS

This is an exquisite and colorful map of Mexico, California and Texas produced during the 1850s. It contains beautiful vignette views, created by H. Warren, of "Gold Washing" in "The newly discovered GOLD districts" of California, the "Ruins at Uxmal, Yucatan," and "Mexican Peasantry." The engraved and hand-colored map along with its striking border was executed by J. Rapkin. The border showcases a variety of fruits, vegetables, and vegetation native to the regions depicted, including cacti, agave, grapes, and gourds. This map was originally published in John Tallis's Illustrated Atlas, a work whose illustrations deviated from the solemn scientific style that so defined early nineteenth-century mapmaking. Indeed, scholars often describe Tallis's charming - albeit still scientifically accurate - atlas as a “decorative series of world maps.” As contemporary map dealer Roderick Barron explains, Tallis’s atlas and Rapkin’s maps “reflect[ed] the glories of Britain’s world empire and provide[d] a pastiche of images of far-flung corners of the world available for the first time to the Victorian armchair traveler.” This unique map shows the southwestern United States and all of Mexico. Texas is depicted in its early statehood form. The map also documents the full span of the majestic Rio Grande River. The Old Spanish Trail, indicated as the "Great Caravan Route," is also pictured extending from Santa Fe (in Texas) to Pueblo de Los Angelos. The Gulf Coast is illustrated eastward to Tallahassee along with the still unsettled portions of southern California. The map's playful vignette of California gold washers did not appear in any of the map's earlier incarnations. As such, this work constitutes an invaluable piece of the history of Western mining in general and the history of the California Gold Rush in particular. (B) Corsicana field is an elliptical-shaped oil and gas producing area located in and around Corsicana in central Navarro County. It is significant because it was the first Texas field to produce oil and gas in important quantities. American Well and Prospecting Company, a water-well contractor, discovered it accidentally on June 9, 1894, while seeking a new water source for the city of Corsicana. The field produces from a pinch-out trap in an Upper Cretaceous sandstone reservoir at an average depth of 1,050 feet. The source of its primary recovery was a combined gas-cap and water drive. Its secondary recovery is the result of a number of saltwater flood projects initiated in the 1950s. Between 1896 and January 1, 1993, the field produced nearly 44 million barrels of oil. From 1900 through 1909 gas from the early field supplied fuel for domestic and industrial uses in Corsicana and other Texas cities. (A) The railroad routes of Frisco Lines and St. Louis and San Francisco railroad are shown from around the time Oklahoma achieved statehood. The introduction of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad in 1882 marked the beginning of Oklahoma's importance as a cattle market center. Early cattle trails were the routes preferred for the development of railroad lines. The introduction of the railroad was an important development because it allowed ranchers to raise beef that first met market demands rather than beef that first met the rigorous demands of the cattle trail. Previously, cattle driven from Texas to Kansas had to be capable of walking and swimming long distances and thus, their meat was often of poor quality. Shawnee National Farm” from Letter from the Secretary of the Interior, Transmitting, in Compliance with Senate Resolution of December 4, 1883, copies of Documents and Correspondence Relating to Leases of Lands in the Indian Territory to Citizens of the United States for Cattle-Grazing and other Purposes. Virginia, and western Pennsylvania. The Shawnee were driven from this area by the Iroquois sometime around the 1660s and then scattered in all directions to South Carolina, Tennessee's Cumberland Basin, eastern Pennsylvania, and southern Illinois. By 1730 most of the Shawnee had returned to their homeland only to be forced to leave once again - this time by American settlement. Moving first to Missouri and then Kansas, the main body finally settled in Oklahoma after the Civil War and derived much of its income from ranching, as seen in the above map. (B) Enclosure No. 3” from Letter from the Secretary of the Interior, Transmitting, in Compliance with Senate Resolution of December 4, 1883, copies of Documents and Correspondence Relating to Leases of Lands in the Indian Territory to Citizens of the United States for Cattle-Grazing and other Purposes. Ranching became big business in Indian Territory because there was no regulation of cattle- grazing on Indian and mixed-blood lands. The Five Civilized Tribes earned a considerable amount of income from leasing their land to white ranchers. Indian Territory was considered a prime ranching location because of its mild climate which allowed cattle to subsist in the winter by eating dry grass and then fatten up in the spring on fresh grass. (A) C. 1914. Plate IV. Reconnaissance Geologic Map of the Grandfield District, Oklahoma” from Bulletin 547. Reconnaissance of the Grandfield District, Oklahoma. The district surrounding the Oklahoma town of Grandfield became of huge interest to the Geological Survey during the first quarter of the twentieth century. In 1912 oil was first discovered across the border at Burkburnett, Texas. It was soon established that part of the Burkburnett township pool, known as the Northwest Extension, lay in the bed of the Red River. Argument between Texas and Oklahoma ensued as to where the border actually lay and this was not settled until 1921 when the Greer County case was brought before the Supreme Court. Greer County became part of Oklahoma. With huge deposits of oil found on the Texas side of the Red River, the U.S. Geological Survey undoubtedly were charged with the location of pools on the Oklahoma side of the border, at Grandfield.
