147 OOC of Oak Hill's Sam Hairston The Subject of this painting Sam Hairston was the founder of Oak Hill. Oak Hill was a magnificent plantation in Southern Virginia that has been written about and is well known for the transitions made through the Civil War. Originally painted by Garl Brown in 1855, this replica was painted by Emma Morehead Whitfield in 1917. This wonderful Oil on Canvas has been set in a gold colored wood guilted frame measuring approximately 43”x48”. E.M. Whitfield oil on canvas portraits have fetched thousands at auctions. This piece of Americana is truly a treasure.
148 Original OOC by Emma Morehead Whitfield This oil on canvas was paint by Emma Morehead Whitfield who was born in Greensboro, NC in 1874 and died in Richmond Virginia in 1932. This portrait would have been done at the peak of her career. Sam Hairston III was about 16 years old in this portrait. He was Jane Hairston's husband. This portrait is set in a gold colored and guilted wood frame measuring approximately 43”x48”.
149 Antique Victorian Chest A fine antique Victorian 3 drawer marble top chest. This commode or dresser is hand crafted in burl walnut with Knapp joint or pin and crescent dovetail drawers. The teardrop pulls are especially handsome giving the COD added character. A wonderful addition to any room. Measurements are approximately 42”x19”x30”
150 Victorian Antique Walnut Cylinder Roll Top Secretary Desk & Bookcase A Victorian period secretary desk has a cylinder roll top plus a bookcase above, dating from about 1885. Solid walnut with matched burl panels, cast brass hardware is original. The old finish is in very fine condition, preserving just enough mars and wear for a little antique character. The cylinder has beautiful matched burl panels on this American made antique library furniture. A pull out writing surface has vintage green felt, inside are tiny drawers and cubicles for papers. The bookcase has adjustable shelves and is removable. Drawers have dovetail joints.

224 Silver Plated Tea/Coffee Service An ornate, mid 19th century Silver Plated Tea/Coffee Service made by Martin & Hall in c1850. Consisting of Coffeepot, Teapot, Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl they are all fully marked on the base. Repousse design of flowers, leaves and geometrics. Martin, Hall & Co were Sheffield based manufacturing silversmiths. The firm started in 1820 with the partnership of Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts, trading as Wilkinson & Roberts. Wilkinson left in 1846 and Roberts went into partnership with his former apprentice, Ebenezer Hall and became Roberts & Hall. Richard Martin and Joshua Hall (brother of Ebenezer) joined the partnership in 1854 and the firm became Martin, Hall & Co, converting to a limited company in 1866 Date & Origin Sheffield, c1850-1866. Overall excellent condition

232 Antique Writing Slope A hand crafted antique mahogany "writing slope" desk dating from the 1870's. The exterior Mahogany has a softly figured grain with solid brass lock and circle shaped cartouches. The open box reveals a mahogany interior with the original inkwell storage area and a slanted pen/nib storage area. When fully opened the box has a perfectly sloped angle for resting upon. A small brass catch on the inside edge would have held the missing top leather covered section in place and, when turned allows this to be released and lifted - The opposite leather covered section would have been be similarly lifted with tab but is also missing. Underneath each side there are simple paper and envelope storage compartments. In fair antique condition having been well used the interior of the desk has commensurate antique marks from use. The exterior has a glossy patina with various light marks, scratches and knocks all of them in keeping with its age and use. The underside has a significant crack in the mahagony. This is a lovely writing slope in fair condition but best used a storage box because of missing leathers. Approximate measurements: CLOSED: Width: 12" Depth: 9 1/4" Height: 3 3/4" - (145mm) OPEN: Depth from back to front of slope when lowered: 18 3/4"

339 Victorian Bachelors Chest After the school of Charles Eastlake. Spoon carvings, burl walnut accents, marble inlay. Each draw has its own lock. Accented with burl and period correct teardrop handles. Original casters are missing however a newer restorative set is in drawer. Approximately 39” tall x 17.5” deep, 39” long. Mirror adds an additional 47”. Drawers are Knapp joint or pin and crescent dovetail with hand hewn bottoms.
