Lot: 4005 - 1967 MARTIN 0-16NY FLAT TO NATURAL ACOUSTIC GUITAR

1967 Martin 0-16NY Flat Top Natural Acoustic Guitar. C. F. Martin 0-16NY Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1967), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 238639, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back, sides and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, black chipboard case. This little Martin is an early (if unheralded) example of a "vintage" re-issue; one of the first in the company's history. Beginning in the early '60s there was a groundswell of demand for 1920s-style 12-fret Martin guitars, which were considered more "authentic" folk instruments than the newer 14-fret styles common since the 1930s. Joan Baez in particular was very influential in this regard; her use of an already-vintage 12-fret 0-45 became an icon of the era. The 0-16NY was offered beginning in 1961 as an affordable guitar for folk-style playing with either steel or nylon strings; to this end, they were built much lighter than the "modern" steel string Martins of the time. The satin (non-gloss) finish and trimmings are very plain but the guitar is built with Style 18 materials; a spruce top with a mahogany body and neck. Essentially this is a re-issue of a late 1920s 0-18, with a wide 12-fret neck, slot head, small bridge, no pickguard, and only side dot position markers. Although advertised as suitable for nylon strings or steel when new, these guitars have full traditional Martin X-bracing and handle light steel strings perfectly well. Overall length is 38 1/4 in. (97.2 cm.), 13 5/8 in. (34.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.). The Hoi An shipwreck sank in the middle of a typhoon zone known as the Dragon Sea, between the late 15th century and early 16th century. It has been named after the nearby town of Faifo, known in modern geography as Hoi An. The shipwreck was found in the early 1990s by local fishermen, who however did not excavate the wreck. Hoi An shipwreck is in fact the only wreck site to have been completely excavated in a correct archaeological manner. Bruno Zach "The Hugger" Sterling Silver Bronze Sculpture. Also known as "La Caresse". Depicts a maiden in lingerie hugging a phallus. Signed B Zach and stamped Sterling. Bruno Zach (sometimes spelled Zack) was born in the town of Schitomir, Ukraine on the May 6, 1891, and died on February 20 1945 in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Hans Bitterlich and Josef Mullner. Zach worked for various foundries in Vienna. On some of his most erotic bronzes, he sometimes worked under the name of Prof. Tuch, attempting to remain anonymous. Subjects of Zach's bronze works include western, orientalist, sporting, animalier, art deco and erotic subjects. Sculptures in bronze and ivory were also cast and carved by him in Vienna. Bruno Zach worked between the years of 1918 and 1935, reveling in the spirit of Art Deco. Although he executed some graceful moving statues, this Berlin based sculptor devoted most of his energy and talents to the exotic. Laynor served his country in World War II by joining other artists, architects and designers as a member of the famed "Ghost Army", the 603rd Camouflage Engineers. Wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, he convalesced in Paris and was able to study with Pablo Picasso and was influenced by him throughout his career. As a renowned artist nationally and internationally, Laynor has won many prestigious awards including the Louis Comfort Tiffany, Guggenheim Fellowship and the Huntington Hartford Fellowship for painting. Mohr commenced his formal artistic instruction in 1905 in Koblenz, Germany under the tutelage of German expressionist William Straube (1871-1954), who was a student of Henry Matisse. His formal training was interrupted by World War I where he served as a Calvary Officer from 1914 to 1918 in the war's eastern front. Sadao Watanabe (1913 - 1996) Untitled Washi Stencil Print. Sadao Watanabe born and raised in Tokyo, was a Japanese printmaker in the 20th Century. He was famous for his Biblical prints rendered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan. As a student of the master textile dye artist Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984), Watanabe was associated with the mingei (folk art) movement. Watanabe uses kozo paper (from mulberry tree) and momigami (kneaded paper). The momigami paper was crumpled by hand, squeezed and wrinkled to give a rough quality to the prints. The katazome method uses traditional organic and mineral pigments in a medium of soybean milk. The protein in the milk bound the colors to the paper's surface. The use of natural materials is one of the characteristics of mingei (folk art). The Vatican Museum, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and many other leading museums in the world had exhibited Watanabe's works. During President Lyndon Johnson's administration, Watanabe's prints were hung in the White House. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1958 and served two years as a medic in the Army from 1961 to 1963 after which he enrolled in Elgin Community College where he received his Associate's Degree. In 1966 he moved to Ft. Collins, CO with his wife, Helen to attend Colorado State University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology. Bruce and Helen moved to Flagstaff in 1969 where he attended NAU and received his Master's Degree in anthropology. Bruce did extensive archeological work in southern Utah and northern Arizona. He had a deep interest in Chaco Canyon and spent years writing about his interpretations of archaeological findings from the area. Bruce had a strong passion for the arts, especially southwestern art. He opened his first art gallery in 1982 and had a long career as a gallery owner and director showcasing many master artists of Southwestern, Native American and Contemporary arts. He opened several fine art galleries over the years in Flagstaff, Sedona, Cottonwood, and San Diego. Bruce enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the arts, archeology and anthropology. He taught at Yavapai Community College and was a guest lecturer at NAU. Bruce's passion for the arts eventually led him to develop his own career as an artist. His talents included designing and creating jewelry as well as painting. Using his own unique and vibrant style he painted bold and textured abstract expressionistic pieces inspired by his work as an archaeologist, the southwest and Native American cultures of this area. He also painted landscapes inspired by his adventures around Arizona and his love of nature. His favorite medium was acrylics but he also worked with encaustics, watercolors and oils. Hardy Palakona 6' #5 Split Cane Fly Rod. In 1874 brothers William Hardy and John James Hardy started "Hardy Brothers" with the purchase of "Superior River and Sea Fishing Tackle" in Alnwick, Northumberland, England. In 1891 they patented and launched "the Perfect" fishing reel to complement the fishing lures they sold. It was successful and they received a royal warrant from King George V of the United Kingdom. They continued to create a variety of winning fishing reels, some of which had novelties including a complete bail arm and long casting reels. In 1897 they opened a shop in London's Pall Mall that lead to international expansion of their fishing rods, lures and guides still made by hand in England. In 1967 Hardy Brothers was bought out by the Harris and Sheldon group and in 1985 renamed the "House of Hardy Limited." It was later merged with a former Hardy employee's fishing company and renamed "Hardy and Greys Limited" in 2004. In 2008 the history of the House of Hardy was made into a documentary, The Lost World of Mr. Hardy. Marc Hauser (1952-2018) is perhaps best known for his portraits, their classically simple lighting and the blank backdrops that give center stage to the subtle and individual expressions of his subjects. Yet Hauser’s studio accommodates everything from celebrity portraits to neighborhood kids. On location he shoots movie stills with the same gusto as he photographs men on the street. Hauser was born in Chicago, and has been photographing professionally since he was a teenager. Playboy was one of the first publications to feature his pictures, which have also appeared in Time, Life, People, and Vogue, among many others.
