Lot: 492 - William Henry Buck (Norwegian/Louisiana, 1840-1888), "Sharecropper's Cabin"

Framed. 14" x 22", framed 19-1/2" x 27-1/2" Provenance: Dr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Dugas, Jr., New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: The demand for portraiture waned after the Civil War, giving way to the emergence of the Louisiana Landscape School led by Richard Clague, an academically trained artist working in the French Barbizon style. The establishment of art galleries and associations provided the artists opportunities to exhibit their paintings and earn a living. Among Clague's most talented students was William Henry Buck. A native of Norway, Buck emigrated to the northeast around 1865 and studied with landscape artist Ernest Ciceri. Arriving in New Orleans in 1870, Buck worked in a cotton merchant's office and studied with Clague. To accurately represent and experience the unique topography and waterways of southern Louisiana, Clague took his students on "plein air" painting expeditions. During the late 19th century, sharecropping emerged as the primary form of farming in Louisiana. The newly freed but landless African American workers and the planters who lacked capital and credit entered a compromise. The formerly enslaved people farmed the land in return for housing and a share of the crop. In the painting "Sharecropper's Cabin, Farm Along the Bayou", Buck depicted the daily life of sharecroppers. Set among the Spanish-moss-draped live oak and cypress trees, the sharecropper's cabin was situated next to the fields and included hanging laundry, cistern for collecting rainwater, and pirogue for transportation in the bayou.

Notes: Already an accomplished landscape painter, the British-born George Castleden moved to New Orleans by 1920. Castleden joined the bohemian community of artists, photographers, musicians and writers in what has become known as the French Quarter Renaissance. He exhibited daily in his gallery in the courtyard of the Cabildo and was an active member of the Arts and Crafts Club and New Orleans Art League. In 1934, Frank Evans, the owner of D. H. Holmes Department Store, commissioned Castleden to create a series of Louisiana landscape paintings for display in the Canal Street store and board room. Dugas, Jr., New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: Raised in the rural town of Hahnville, Clarence Millet was well acquainted with the bayous and marshes of south Louisiana. As a teenager, Millet came to New Orleans to work as an apprentice in an engraving company. The aspiring artist had the opportunity to study under the midwestern artists Robert Grafton and Louis Oscar Griffiths when they visited New Orleans in 1917. Millet furthered his art studies at Tulane University with William Woodward and then at the New York Art Students League. Clarence Millet returned to New Orleans and became an active member of the artists, writers, photographers and musicians that populated the French Quarter in the mid-20th century. Millet was known for both his paintings of the historic French Quarter and glimpses of rural life in Louisiana. In this engaging pendant pair of paintings "Settlement Along the Bayou", Millet focused on a small community of cabins nestled on the bend of the bayou.

Notes: A native of Modena, Zampighi was born during a tumultuous time when the city was being besieged by waves of revolutionaries and invaders; shortly thereafter it was incorporated into the newly-unified Kingdom of Italy during the Risorgimento, and his childhood and earliest instruction were inevitably immersed in the cultural identity, history and past glories of Italy. This was to have a profound effect on the trajectory of his career, in terms of both style and subject. A precocious artistic talent, at the young age of thirteen he was accepted at the Regia Accademia di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti di Modena, where he received a decidedly classical education which emphasized the ancient world and the Renaissance. After completing his studies with first class medals in all subjects, he was awarded a prestigious and highly coveted scholarship to study in Rome. In 1883, he traveled to Florence where he was exposed to the tenets of the Macchiaioli, an influential local group of plein air artists who extolled the virtues of the Italian working class and poor, rebuffing the sentimental. Zampighi soon began creating scenes of domestic life which were intended to reveal the innate pride of everyday Italians. An early proponent of photography, he frequently would reference photographs he had taken of posed models and props in his studio. The resulting works, as evidenced by the fine example offered here, were intensely intimate interior scenes of families with the figures looking towards each other and blissfully unaware of the viewer. His academic training is apparent in the masterful interplay of light and shadow, the careful yet seemingly spontaneous composition, and the sophisticated color palette of warm-hued tones.
