Provenance: The Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Charleston, SC. Note: Will Henry Stevens was a pioneer of Modernism in the South who worked simultaneously in both abstract and representational styles. Stevens came to New Orleans in 1921 to teach at Newcomb College, a position he held until the year prior to his death. Stevens became part of the active and exciting art circle centered around the French Quarter. Prior to and during his tenure in New Orleans, he also worked in and visited New York, where he was exposed to current international developments in artistic styles. During a trip to New York in the 1930s, Stevens was greatly influenced by many art forms, including Sung Dynasty paintings, Taoism, the poetry of Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman, and modernist painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Both artists had a strong influence on Stevens’ aesthetic. “Flight” from 1945 offered here is a paradigmatic example of the artist’s talent. The magnitude and depth of the dynamic composition, penetrating color palette and large scale combine to create a rare masterwork in the artist’s oeuvre. Stevens’ mature abstract works are his most sought-after, and one of this caliber is rarely seen at auction. Ref.: Gruber, Richard J. "Will Henry Stevens." 64 Parishes. www.64parishes.org. Note: Irma Logan was born in New Orleans and attended both Newcomb College and Columbia University. After a career in business, she retired from the Roosevelt Hotel in 1965 and decided to return to her creative passion. She studied with local artists such as George Dunbar, Kendall Shaw, Harold Carney and Leonard Flettrich and exhibited at the Downtown Gallery, St. Charles Gallery and in several juried shows including the 1973 Artists’ Biennial at the New Orleans Museum of Art. While her contemporaries found great public success in their artistic careers, Logan preferred a more private career, making her works hidden gems today. Her rare paintings have not thus far appeared on the secondary market; in fact, this is the first work by Logan to be sold at auction. The lot offered here is a sweeping and stylized view of New Orleans featuring recognizable French Quarter landmarks in the foreground, such as Saint Louis Cathedral and the Pontalba building. The snaking Mississippi River guides the composition towards the background where the city skyline is further highlighted against a cloudy sky. The canvas’ skewed perspective captures the sprawling city’s vibrant aesthetic, and the resulting work serves as a testament to Logan’s innate talent.

Among the New York Renaissance-revival cabinetmakers, Roux was most known for adapting the European “altar of gastronomy” form that incorporated themes of hunt and harvest, as evident in the Metropolitan Museum example and the sideboard in the present lot. Herter later formed the Herter Brothers firm with his brother Christian and their creations decorated some of the most prestigious residences of the Gilded Age. Gear" stamp on stretcher, 29 in. x 36 in., framed, overall 33 in. x 40 1/8 in. x 2 1/4 in. Note: Harold Rudolph was active in New Orleans in the 1870s and 1880s during a period when many of the great Louisiana landscape artists of the state were in their prime. While less is known today about Rudolph than some of his contemporaries, he was praised in the New Orleans Republican and Daily Picayune newspapers shortly after his arrival in the city for both his portrait paintings and landscapes. Rudolph exhibited his work with the W.E. Seebold Gallery on Canal Street where he had a studio on the upper level and later at their location on Prytania Street. Following the death of his brother-in-law and partner in portrait painting in 1877, Rudolph focused primarily on scenes of the Louisiana countryside, although relatively few of his landscapes are extant today. Particularly skilled at depicting sunsets and sunrises, in the rare canvas offered here from 1879, Rudolph masterfully portrays a fiery sunset at last glow reflected in the bayou in the foreground. The scene is framed by darkened cypress trees and a moss-draped oak, while a cabin is hidden within the shadows. A lone figure contemplates the sunset from his perch beneath the oak tree adding a sense of narrative and charm to the timeless scene.

Provenance: Descended in the family of John Eager Howard; Didier Inc., 2008. Note: The sophisticated and versatile dining table offered here, featuring finely reeded legs associated with Baltimore cabinetmakers of the late Federal period, descended in the family of American politician and soldier John Eager Howard (1752-1827). John Eager Howard was a decorated colonel during the Revolutionary War and went on to hold several congressional positions. He was elected as the fifth governor of Maryland in 1788 and served three consecutive one-year terms as governor. This table was part of the furnishings of Howard’s vast Maryland estate named Belvidere. Completed in 1794, Belvidere was renowned for its Georgian-style architecture and elegant interiors. Thomas Twining, founder of the English tea company, visited the home in 1798 and noted that it “possessed all the elegance of an English villa.” In 1815, Howard donated a parcel of his estate’s land for the construction of Baltimore’s Washington Monument. After Howard’s death in 1827, most of the interior contents of Belvidere were sold, however, the family retained some important pieces, including this table. The mansion was demolished in 1874 to make room for Baltimore’s urban expansion. A hotel of the same namesake was constructed on the former site of the mansion in 1903. In 2019, Neal Auction sold a finely figured and inlaid sideboard from the same family collection of the descendants of John Eager Howard that was also sold through esteemed New Orleans antiquarian Don Didier (see Neal Auction, September 14, 2019, lot 92). The trip yielded not only some of the most powerful depictions of the Great Depression (and poverty in general), but also some of the most famous photographs in the history of the medium. Shahn’s work had always been about protest, fighting against injustice and prejudice, and photography was the perfect way to express his progressive ideas and shed light on the unfairness that afflicted so much of the general populace at the time. He consciously avoided using concepts he learned in his academic training, choosing instead to focus only on the subject at hand as is evident in the photo offered here: a quaint yet powerful view of an empty street and carousel, the absence of people deafening in black and white. In subsequent years Shahn’s use of the camera slowly declined until the late 1940s when he stopped using it altogether, but his images from that era continue to resonate to this day. Lot: 526 - Helmut Newton (German/Australian)
Helmut Newton (German/Australian, 1920-2004), "Two Playmates on Back Porch with Lemon Tree, L.A.", negative creation date 1986, print date 1990, gelatin silver print, pencil-signed, titled, dated and numbered "3/10" en verso, pencil-inscribed with artist, title, date, numbered "3/10" and "Gallery for Fine Photography, New Orleans, LA" label on backing board, image 22 1/4 in. x 18 3/4 in., sheet 23 1/2 in. x 19 1/2 in., original frame; overall 32 1/4 in. x 26 1/4 in. x 1 1/2 in.; accompanied by 3 vintage Playboy magazines featuring the photo and models, copy of letter of provenance from A Gallery for Fine Photography, correspondence with Playboy and 2 exhibition posters. (8 pcs.). Provenance: A Gallery for Fine Photography, New Orleans, LA, 1991. Ill.: Newton, Helmut. "Helmut Newton's Playmates". Playboy. Sept. 1987, Vol. 34, No. 9: 86. Note: “For his part Newton has transformed – or at least profoundly influenced – the erotic fantasies of our time and his influence extends farther than he would have imagined, making him a kind of sorcerer’s apprentice, who has unleashed a perpetual motion of contemporary images.” – Karl Lagerfeld From the late 1950s through the late 1990s, Helmut Newton permanently pushed the boundaries and altered the limits of fashion, photography and the way the camera lens views sexuality. Newton never referred to himself as an artist but as a “hired gun” doing what was necessary to accomplish the job, but his unique vision helped to shape the styles of such publications and fashion houses as Vogue, French Vogue, Elle, Yves-Saint Laurent and Chanel by not so subtly blending art, commerce and eroticism. His relationship with Playboy, however, was markedly different than the others. His photographic allusions to film noir and surrealist art were in stark contrast to what the pages of the “gentleman’s magazine” typically published. Further deviating from Playboy’s standard layouts, Newton’s photographs featured women with virtually no makeup and unstyled hair. When referring to “Two Playmates on Back Porch with Lemon Tree, L.A.” on offer here, Newton recalled, “…what interested me most was they came from small provincial towns, not big city girls… I placed the girls in all American settings – back yards, a house trailer…. I’m a B-Movie freak and some American life is like a B-Movie.” Newton’s bold, cinematic approach unveiled an alternative view of fantasy and voyeurism to the glossy, airbrushed world of Playboy. Note: Rain Webb is known for his mesmerizing paintings which can be seen around New Orleans at locations such as Jacques-Imo’s and, more recently, Boil Seafood House. His artwork has been an integral part of the cultural aesthetic of the city for decades, with perhaps none more recognizable than his landmark mural “Neighborhood Archeology” that formerly graced the side of the Apple Barrel bar on Frenchmen Street. According to Gambit’s Blake Pontchartrain: “Webb asked Philipe Benet, who owned the property in the 1980s, if he could paint a mural on the side of the building to pay tribute to the history and culture of New Orleans.” The lot on offer here is a study for that painting. Centered is a gray-haired academic, green parrot perched on his shoulder, who is studying an artifact while sitting within an excavation site that features the Mississippi riverbend. In the background, the horizon line is adorned with buildings found on Frenchmen Street. This smaller-scale version is the last remaining vestige of the beloved image, as it was eventually painted over following Hurricane Katrina, making it a veritable artifact of New Orleans history. Lot: 549 - Michael Banks (American/Alabama, b. 1972)
Michael Banks (American/Alabama, b. 1972), "Hands Holding Flowers and Rosaries", 2 paint and tar on panels, each signed lower right, 16 in. x 24 in. and 20 in. x 24 in., both unframed. (2 pcs.) Note: Michael Banks is a contemporary self-taught artist from Guntersville, Alabama. As an artistically inclined and resourceful child, Banks drew and painted with whatever materials he could find, including his mother’s lipstick. This resourcefulness led to a later appreciation for found materials and experimentation. Following the devastating loss of his mother, then twenty-year-old Banks struggled with his mental health and could not paint for five years. Fortunately, Banks regained his creative spark after recalling his mother’s encouragement, and his artistic career has since flourished. He often speaks of his drive to create as an unstoppable force or curse, stating it is “paint or die.” The works offered in this lot each feature a lone reaching hand, a flower, and a rosary, all repeating motifs in Banks’ work. The relaxed hands delicately balance the long stems, contrasting with the fervent angular marks in the surface. Banks’ paintings are constructed in layers, frequently with roofing tar as the base that is scraped and incised in a deliberately expressive manner that provides a sense of energy and mystery to his creations. Jehudith Sobel (Polish, 1924-2012), "Abstract Interior", 1958, watercolor on paper mounted to board, signed and dated lower right, 24 in. x 19 in., unframed. Note: Jehudith Sobel began her artistic career at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland where she was introduced to the burgeoning Constructivist movement. This era, when she studied under Kazemir Malevich’s assistant Wladyslaw Streminski, is referred to as her “academic period.” After her schooling, she lived and worked in Israel for five years where she showed in many galleries and museums and began developing her individual style. Upon moving to New York in 1956, Sobel landed a solo show at the Jewish Museum in New York City and was included in several group exhibitions around the city. She and her architect husband bought a summer home in Woodstock, NY where she became involved in the Woodstock Artists Association. Informed by her Constructivist instructors as well as global art trends at the time gearing towards abstraction, Sobel’s work references these movements while maintaining her own distinct style with rich, complex colors and expressive brushwork. Despite her roots in the abstract, her compositions depict everyday life, frequently focusing on interior scenes and landscapes as is evident the lots on offer here. Ref.: “Jehudith Sobel”. Lance Letscher (American/Texas, b. 1962), "Water", 2001, mixed media collage on masonite mounted to board, signed and titled on reverse of mount, "D. Berman Gallery, Austin, TX" label with artist, title and date on backing board, 10 1/2 in. x 13 1/4 in., framed, overall 19 1/2 in. x 22 1/4 in. x 3 in. Provenance: D. Berman Gallery, Austin, TX. Note: As a child Lance Letscher would clean out empty rental properties for his grandparents, creating stories around the items the previous tenants had left behind. This childhood activity would eventually become part of his creative process in rummaging for old magazines, books, notebooks and record covers - the “traces of other people” - that end up in his collages. Originally starting his artistic life as a sculptor, the process of collage interested him greatly and led to a shift in the focus of his work. The nature of the medium involves taking the work of other people and disassociating it from the original intent, creating questions of what something was before, who made it and how does it relate now. Letscher claims he does no sketches and has no idea of the finished product when he sits down to create: “I am all about working in a way that takes as much of the control from my conscious mind as possible.” This method results in a balance between the ambiguity of abstraction and a loose narrative that forms from the natural associations he makes with the objects. His background in sculpture is also clearly present with many of his works being constructed in multiple layers, as seen in the two fascinating lots on offer here. Often Letscher mounts his collages on wood and then cuts the wood and rearranges the pieces creating “a three-dimensional illusion.” The artist refers to his works as “unfinished thoughts…they are dysfunctional models that have a feeling of precarious equilibrium that I really identify with.” Ref.: Perlaky, Daniel. “Traces of Other People’s Lives Manifested from a Profound and Excruciating Sense of Boredom.” 2011. Lot: 559 - Chris Doyle (American/New York, b. 1959)
Chris Doyle (American/New York, b. 1959), "Prophet", 2013, watercolor on paper, "Catharine Clark Gallery, San Francisco, CA" labels with artist, title and date on backing paper, 32 in. x 32 in., framed, overall 36 1/4 in. x 36 1/8 in. x 1 1/8 in. Note: Chris Doyle is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Boston College in 1981 and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1985. His work ranges from large-scale public installations to crude stop-motion animation to starkly vivid and intricate watercolor paintings. Throughout his career, Doyle focuses on humanity’s relationship to the natural world with his work reflecting themes of “the tension between the individual and the group in a culture fiercely devoted to progress.” The painting offered today is reminiscent of his 2012 series of watercolors “The Savage State” in which he reinterprets Thomas Cole’s “The Course of Empire” (1833-1836), illustrating the forest floor and the trees overhead through fractured geometry. This depiction of the angelic child as “the prophet” with the group of children listening intently remarks upon the reality that the next generation must confront what the previous one has overlooked, especially when considering humans’ relationship with the earth. Doyle’s characteristic sharp lines and shapes contrast with the hazy glow of the prophet figure. The stark off-center angle of negative space cuts into the canopy of trees above, adding compositional dynamism and a visual thread to his other works.
