Two Native American Hopi C. R. Sequi Komalestewa polychrome see jars, ca 1980 signed under base. Provenance: From the Estate of a long time collector in AZ who collected Native American pottery over a period of 40-50 years. Cynthia Sequi Komalestewa (1955-1995) became a student of Sylvia Naha and learned to make Hopi pottery the Tewa way. At some point, signed her work with "Komalestewa" as her last name. In her obituary (very brief) online, there is no mention of her name being Komalestewa. Her work is described as "Hopi Polychrome", but she was born and died in Navajoland.

Native American Hopi pottery jar by Tonita Nampeyo (b. 1934) with moth motif, ca 1970-1980. signed under base. Tonita Hamilton Nampeyo was born in 1934, the daughter of Fannie Nampeyo and granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano. She grew up surrounded by some of the finest potters on Earth and she learned a lot from them. But she never produced much pottery. In the last years of her mother's life, she and Tonita were almost inseparable. Fannie was slowly going blind but, like her mother before her, she was still making pots by feel. Tonita wasn't making pottery because she was busy painting pots for Fannie. After Fannie passed on, Tonita inherited her role as head of the Hopi-Tewa Corn clan, moved into the Corn clan house in Tewa Village and assumed those duties. When Tonita did make her own pottery, she tended to stick with the shapes and designs she learned from her mother.

Biography from the Archives of AskArt: Anatole Krasnyansky (born in 1930; Kiev, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian-American artist who has gained prominence by pioneering a new watercolor technique. Through experimentation, Krasnyansky's introduced paper texture into his creative process and made it a dynamic component of his watercolors, resulting in an expansion of the medium's potential. With this new creative process, Krasnyansky added texture and depth to the watercolor medium and expanded its expressive possibilities to a level usually associated with oil painting. He was born in Kiev, growing up and living during the times when Ukraine was a part of the U.S.S.R. Krasnyansky received master's degrees in fine art and architecture. He was already well known in the U.S.S.R. for his classical themes and keen perspective; however, he found that the freedom of expression that he needed in his artwork could not be found within the strictures of the Soviet Union and moved to the United States in 1975. Since his arrival to the U.S. in 1975, the artist has found important uses for his knowledge of architecture, design and his creative imagination, and he has realized his tremendous potential and achieved virtuosity in several different artistic areas. Bordering on the surreal, Krasnyansky's figures never depart from the recognizable. Altogether new in form, they contain echoes of the artist's Eastern heritage, the cubist ideas of Picasso and Braque and the modernity and energy of American culture... culminating in works of dazzling color and brilliant mastery of perspective and lines, born of years as an architect. Still each and everyone of Krasnyansky's works, since his move to the United States, has formed to his new style of creative imagery. Anatole began working as a scenic artist for ABC and CBS, including the production of two Academy Awards shows. He subsequently became a set designer for Universal Studios (credits including The Blues Brothers and Battlestar Galactica) and the Stage Art Director for the Odyssey Theatre. Krasnyansky has become known worldwide for his surrealist masked figures. Krasnyansky's work has been exhibited at the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries in their exhibition "International Watercolor Masters", along with works from Marc Chagall, Camille Pissarro, and Diego Rivera. Don Swann American, (1889-1954) village street etching, 111/200 Biography from Invaluable: Artist Don Swann, born in Florida in 1889, studied art in Rome and Munich before returning to America where he resided in Baltimore until his death in 1954. Don Swann was an artist who also worked as a writer and engraver, illustrating significant structures, mostly in and around Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Much of his work is in permanent collections of the U.S. Naval Museum, the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress, as well as many notable private collections. His sizable body of historic Americana includes many of Don Swann's etchings. Artist Don Swann's work included schools, universities, ships, trees, and a U.S. Navy series. Some of Don Swann's prints for sale are rendered in color. His 1939 book, a collection of prints entitled, Colonial and Historic Homes of Maryland, shows the high quality of his work.
