Lot: 21065 - 1909 famous aviators signed ephemera program rare

This is a exceptionally rare one-of-a-kind 113 year old Aero Club of France banquet program that was autographed by NUMEROUS world famous pioneer aviators! A list of the most notable among them includes Wilbur Wright's first 2 pupils Count de Lambert and Paul Tissandier, Hubert Latham (who also flew at aviation meets in the U.S.A.), Robert Esnault Pelterie (both aviator and constructor who would go on to become recognized as an important pioneer in rocket development and space exploration), Count Henry De La Vaulx (record-setting balloonist) and Ernest Archdeacon. See the final three scans for brief bios of these groundbreaking men. Three other lesser-known notables who also signed this were all very early balloonists (one of whom, "Arton", spotted the German advance in 1914), and finally a famous caricaturist who specialized in drawing pioneer aviators (and whose work appeared in many early publications) who went by the name SEM.

Lot: 21070 - 1906 aviation ephemera first ever Curtiss motor in airplane

This 116 year old sales catalog and prospectus for an ornithopter (flapping wing) flying machine is stupendously rare for several reasons. First of all, this was the very first heavier-than-air craft in the world to be fitted with a (Glenn) Curtiss engine (see final scan). On page 26 of this catalog is a facsimile of a letter from Curtiss to Mr. Jones (see scan 8) and, in a remarkable coincidence, we acquired a postcard sent from an employee of Curtiss to a friend in March 1907 with descriptive text about building a motor for the Jones aircraft (see scans 10,11 12 and 13)! Secondly, we have never seen, or even heard of, a single other existing copy of this catalog! It contains a striking full color double page illustration of the ornithopter (scan 5) plus a gold foil seal (scan 9) and is 100% complete in every respect. Both the front and back covers have the same color graphics. This would truly be the "crown jewel" in any advanced private Curtiss collection or pioneer aviation museum.

It's hard to describe just how insane, and insanely deadly, this 110 year old invention by the "AERO Unicycle Co." was, so read the information sheet in the final scan and decide for yourself. Needless to say, this contraption never achieved widespread production as it would probably have killed the vast majority of daredevil riders foolhardy enough to try it. Lot: 21081 - 1946 commercial motorcycle vehicle California

It's difficult to choose a name for this odd looking vehicle, which appears to be a combination motorcycle, scooter, or perhaps a delivery mini--truck? The first part consists of 80 pages on heavy, high-quality glossy stock, describing various aspects of the meet. The "Owen Magnetic" was a pioneering brand of hybrid electric luxury automobiles notable for their use of an electromagnetic transmission and electric hybrid drivetrains. We are offering both a luxury catalog and a less expensive catalog of the Owen Magnetic in this auction. The company was in business between 1915 and 1922. Why did it go bankrupt in 1922 after building only 700 cars? A 1917 Ford Model T cost $360, Cadillacs ran about $2,000, and the Owen Magnetic started at $3,700 and went up from there to $6,000. In short, being better isn't always enough, cars need to be competitively priced. This luxury catalog of the world's FIRST hybrid car contains 18 richly illustrated pages plus a stunning decorative cover.

See the final 3 scans for information plus copies of 2 photographs taken at this remarkable event. The paperweight is 100% original and unrestored, and is in excellent condition as well. This remarkable archive contains 7 unique (one-of-a-kind) photographs and 16 letters (a number of which are multi-page). We have provided 24 scans but this of course does not show everything- such as a handwritten note from Lawrence Rotch and his business card from Harvard and the cover of a Hall Scott aviation motors brochure which were too difficult to scan. In any event, this is the only such archive of its kind, and belongs either in an aviation museum or an advanced pioneer aviation collection.

This is an extremely rare 107 year old sepia photograph of famous American pioneer aviator Art Smith taken at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition of 1915, and what makes it "extremely" rare is that it was warmly inscribed by Smith to a good friend of his named "Hoeter" Nelson (probably the nickname of his fellow pioneer aviator Nels Nelson!). Both the autograph and the inscription are clear and unfaded, and the image of Smith sitting behind the wheel of his plane, cap turned backwards, with the radiator and propeller in view directly behind him is quite wonderful. The contrast and tonality of this large photo are excellent as well. Much information about this celebrated American daredevil pilot can be seen in the third and fourth scan. We sold an Art Smith portrait photograph that was also signed and inscribed to "Hoeter" Nelson (they both came from the same collection) in our November auction, but the image on this one is far more desirable as it actually shows him in his airplane.

It is difficult to overestimate the rarity of this very large full page full color illustration from January 24, 1904 depicting the world's very FIRST successful airplane flight that took place just several weeks earlier. That history making flight by the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903 was deliberately shrouded in secrecy by Wilbur and Orville and only witnessed by a handful of people. The Wrights were extremely concerned that their ground breaking invention would be copied by others before they were granted patents, and according to our fanatically thorough search through numerous resources devoted to the Wright brothers, this is an UNKNOWN and UNRECORDED depiction of their 1903 aircraft! What's more, it's a fairly accurate rendition, which would indicate to us that details were leaked, and somehow found their way to this publication, by one of the handful of witnesses. Be that as it may, this would be an important addition to any advanced Wright brothers collection, whether private, or museum.

We will also be listing some of these others in this auction, including a contract and letters from the Moisant Aviation School, and letters from the Roberts Motors and Sloane Motors companies! See the final scan for information about the Moisant School.

Lot: 22887 - 1912 aviation letters from Moisant aviators rare

This lot is comprised a pair or two rare letters from "The MOISANT International Aviators" organization. They were mailed on Sept. 18, 1912, and on Oct. 19, 1912, and the recipient was a Mr. Cushman in NYC. We purchased a number of items from the estate of Mr. Cushman including a catalog and contracts from The Moisant School, as well as several volumes of contemporary aviation periodicals, which we will be listing in future auctions. These letters were in response to Mr. Cushman's desire to learn to fly, and the contents are entirely aviation related.

Lot: 22888 - 1912 aviation ephemera lot letters and cards

This is a unique lot of two 1912 letters from the American aviation periodical AERO accompanied by two advertising cards that were all mailed to a Mr. Cushman of NYC. See our other lot of MOISANT INTERNATIONAL AVIATORS letters that were mailed to the same gentleman.

Lot: 22889 - 1911 aviation sales catalog and letter

This is a very rare 111 year old sales catalog plus factory letter from the firm of C. & A. Wittemann Aeronautical Engineers. This early American firm specialized in kits and parts for constructing "aeroplanes and gliders", and the accompanying letter from their factory, dated May 12, 1911 and signed by a Wittemann, was sent to George Richardson who was the President of the Intercollegiate Aeronautical Association who had purchased one of their gliders. This catalog contains 23 mostly photo illustrated pages on high quality stock, and the only example we have ever come across, which did NOT include an original letter from the factory, sold at the Phillip Weiss auction 12 years ago on Sept., 20, 2008 for $340 plus 18% B.P. making a total price of $401 (see final scan).

Lot: 22890 - 1912 aviation 14 issues of "Aircraft" bound w. covers

This is a bound volume containing 14 individual issues of the American aviation periodical "AIRCRAFT". Contains 12 issues from 1912 plus the first 2 issues from 1913 for a total of 399 richly illustrated pages. All issues were bound with their original outer covers and all adverts. The only issue is cosmetic: it lacks the front and back covers which apparently broke off sometime during the past 111 years. This was bought together, many years ago, with 3 similar bound volumes of the American aviation periodical "AERO" lacking the front and back covers, so inquire if interested.

Lot: 22891 - 1910 aviation signed Vuitton helicopter catalog hyper rare

Yes, this experimental helicopter was designed and built by Pierre and Jean Vuitton, twin sons of "the" Louis Vuitton, 113 years ago. Although generally unknown, the twins were pioneer aviators and designed this primitive helicopter that was exhibited at the Paris air show at the Grand Palais in November of 1910. Jean Vuitton, only 20 years old, sadly died three days before the show opened. His brother Pierre signed and inscribed this catalog to Swiss pioneer aviator Armand Dufaux who became famous for flying the length of Lake Geneva in 1910. Pierre became a pilot in World War 1 and was fatally wounded in 1917. This catalog contains 16 pages plus covers, which display the world famous LV logo on the front. The final 3 scans were found on the internet. It would be difficult to overestimate the rarity of this remarkable catalog, of which we have never seen a single other copy, even UNsigned, in over 35 years of collecting! If anyone seeing this has a way of contacting surviving Vuitton heirs (great great great grandsons of Louis) Benoist or Pierre I'm certain that they would be very pleased indeed to know about this UNIQUE (signed) piece of their family history.

Lot: 22892 - 1922 female aviation award certificate rare

This is a UNIQUE and quite beautiful 101 year old large decorative award certificate for an important woman aviator who was a flight student of Lincoln Beachey (and possibly his fiance'). See the 2 final scans for much information about this lady. The award measures a large 33 ½ x 24 inches and is magnificently illustrated as can be seen by the scans. At the bottom right is a long inscription dedicated to Gatlin (see scan 4), and it's dated 1922. Also included is a photograph of Gatlin being presented with the key to the Bolling, Washington airfield by the mayor. This would look fabulous if matted and framed for display.

Lot: 22893 - 1911 Indian motorcycle aviation motor very rare

This is an ULTRA rare original 112 year old sales catalog for the "Indian Aero Motor" built for the Hendee Manufacturing Co., of Springfield, Mass. See the information provided in the final scan. Contains 12 richly illustrated pages plus beautiful pictorial cover.

Lot: 22894 - 1910 aviation Wilbur Wright brothers German catalog rare

This is an extremely RARE original 113 year old sales catalog for the German Wright Type "A" airplane. The title translates loosely as: "Participation in the Great Flying Demonstration" by the (German) "Wright Flying machine Company". See the 2 final scans for a comprehensive description of this event. The catalog contains 8 richly illustrated pages plus highly attractive cover with raised lettering and the propellers augmented in shiny silver. A wonderful production both inside and out, and the only example we have ever seen in over 35 years of collecting pioneer-era aviation.

Lot: 22895 - Jan. 1909 Orville Wright brothers aviation letter ALS

This is a 104 year old handwritten letter from Orville Wright to George Besancon, ("Engineer, Aeronaut"), who was President of the Aero Club of France as well as the Editor of the leading French aviation periodical "L'Aerophile". Amusingly enough, Orville misdated the year as 1908 instead of 1909, which happens with many people after every New Year as they're still used to writing the "old" year. The contents of this letter, sent from Orville's hotel when in Pau, are in reply to a letter from Besancon to Orville congratulating him (and Katherine) from having escaped injury in a Railway accident they were in on January 16th (see the final scan around the middle of the page).

Lot: 22896 - ca. 1909 aviation glider or test airplane photograph

This is a rare original circa 1908 - 1910 sepia photograph of a gentleman preparing to take off in what is either a glider or a test model of his biplane without engine or propellers. See the contemporary handwritten text on the back for more information about this 112+ year old private (clearly one-of-a-kind) photograph.

Lot: 22897 - reprint aviation photograph of Wright aviator Brookins

This is a large photograph of celebrated Wright brothers exhibition team aviator Walter Brookins at Staten Island, New York in 1913 together with his passenger Nellie Brown. We are almost certain that this is a later print (though undoubtedly from the 1913 negative), so this is reflected in the price which, if this were an original "Type A" photo, would be at least $100. The image, nonetheless, is absolutely wonderful.

Lot: 22898 - antique aviation cabinet photograph very rare

This is a circa 1909 - 1911 cabinet or mounted photograph of an airplane built and flown by C.C. Rigny of Matamoras, Pa. (according to the information on the front (in contemporary handwriting on the bottom right of the mount) and back of this photo. However, despite an extensive search, we were unable to find ANY information about this aviator or his monoplane which is quite unusual to say the least! The airplane looks completely flightworthy and the aviator is accompanied in this photo by three serious-looking gentlemen, so it's quite a mystery why there is no record of him or his flying machine anywhere. This is, therefore, most probably the ONLY such photo of Rigny and his airplane in existence and actually belongs in an American "History of Aviation" museum.

Lot: 22899 - c. 1911 aviation framed cabinet photograph McCurdy

This is a scarce and wonderful framed cabinet photograph of famous pioneer aviator J.A.D. McCurdy's somewhat unusual biplane. Note the round "cage" with the propeller inside it. It is still in its original period frame, and we've attached a photocopy on the back of McCurdy sitting in it. The photographer's name is signed on the matte and looks like "Cramer"?

Lot: 22900 - antique 1910 aviation rppc Atlantic City NJ

This is an original 112 year old stamped and dated July 12, 1910 sepia real photographic postcard or rppc of a Curtiss airplane captured in dramatic full flight over the beach at the Atlantic City aviation meet. On the lowermost left the name of photographer "Albert" is printed in the image.

This is a set of 3 original circa 110 year old postcards of bizarre experimental pioneer era airplanes.

Lot: 22902 - rare lot of 11 aviation motor photographs and patent

This is a rare and highly uncommon lot consisting of 11 original silver gelatin photographs of circa 1910 Adams Farwell aviation motors plus a patent dated Sept., 26, 1915. The photos are various sizes ranging from 7 x 5 to 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, and the patent booklet has 13 pages of text and illustrations. Several of the photos were mounted either on stiff board or on an album page, and almost certainly originate from the factory itself. See the final 2 scans for information about this important American company which provided motors for both aviation as well as automobiles prior to WWI.

Lot: 22903 - ca. 1913 aviation flying boat panorama rppc

This is a highly unusual and extremely scarce real photo "panorama" postcard of what looks to be a Glenn Curtiss flying boat coming in for a landing low over the crowd, with the body of water being somewhere behind the trees and not visible. You can see the spectators all looking up (perhaps somewhat startled?) indicating that this was an actual action shot and not a "montage" photo. We were told that this was taken in Daytona, Florida, but cannot of course confirm this without further proof. Such "panorama" photo postcards are few and far between, and we have never seen this particular image before.

Lot: 22904 - ca. 1910 real photo airplane aviation postcard

rare and unusual real photographic postcard of an airplane either taking off or landing in a field

Lot: 22905 - antique aviation meet poster card rare

This is a rare 112 year old "poster" postcard from the famous 1910 aviation meet at Rouen, France. This card has a striking image of several ladies watching a plane in flight, and it's actually stamped and postmarked from Rouen in 1910. We will also be listing another (different image) poster postcard from this same meeting.

Lot: 22906 - 1909 PC signed by EVERY aviator at world's FIRST aviation meet

This UNIQUE, as in one-of-a-kind, postcard pictures the aviators and their airplanes that participated at the world's FIRST aviation meet that took place in Reims (also referred to as Betheny or Champagne), France 114 years ago. What makes it so incredible is that it was hand-signed by EVERY single one of those aviators! They are: Glenn Curtiss (winner of the world's first airplane race); Louis Bleriot (made the world's first cross-channel flight from France to England also in 1909); Hubert Latham (world famous aviator who also flew in the U.S.A the following year); Henri Farman (famous aviator and constructor who made the first kilometer flight, and the first city to city flight in Europe); Paul Tissandier (record-breaking aeronaut and Wilbur Wright's famous pupil); Alberto Santos-Dumont (world famous aviator/constructor who made the first public flight in Europe in Nov., 1905); Leon Delagrange (celebrated French sculptor and aviator who crashed and died in 1910); Robert Esnault Pelterie (aviator and constructor who later went on to become a world famous rocketry and astronautics pioneer in the 1930s); Louis Paulhan (celebrated European aviator/constructor who took part in aviation meets in the U.S.A. the following year); and Roger Sommer (celebrated British aviator/constructor of biplanes). Roger Sommer's autograph is the only one of the ten that's not entirely legible (we can only see the "Roger" part clearly) but we have had 2 other cards autographed by him and it's clearly his signature. In fact, EVERY signature on here is GUARANTEED to be 100% authentic, and the fact that they are ALL on here, at the very first aviation meet in history, makes this an almost priceless survivor from the pioneer-era of aviation.

Lot: 22907 - set of 6 Benoist airboat rppcs 1914 aviation 1st airline in history

This set of Benoist "airboat" real photo postcards or rppcs show the same famous Type XlV hydroplane, or "airboat" as he called it, that was used in Florida during the world's very FIRST scheduled airline! See the final scan for more information about this landmark event. All 6 of these cards show the airboat(s) being flown at Ceder Point, Ohio in 1914. Real photo postcards of these very same Benoist XlV airboats being flown in Florida sell (quickly!) for at least $100 apiece because of that historical connection, so this set is very inexpensive by comparison.

Lot: 22908 - 1911 aviation real photo postcard or rppc of a crashed airplane

This is a 112 year old highly unusual image of a crashed monoplane tilted on its side with a group of 12 men posing in front of it. No idea where this was taken or what model of monoplane this was, but the image itself is definitely rather striking.

Lot: 22909 - c. 1910 aviation rppc wonderful image Bleriot airplane

Lot: 22914 - c. 1912 aviation rppc of Curtiss school airplanes

This is a wonderful and very uncommon circa 111 year old sepia real photo postcard or rppc showing a group of Curtiss flying boats at the Curtiss School of aviation. We've seen this same image in a book and it was titled as such.

This is an extremely unusual circa 115 year old real photo postcard or rppc of: "Testing Jones airship propeller on ice boat. Speed 35 miles per hour. Estimated airship speed 30 Mi." We have also listed in this auction a fabulously rare original 1907 sales catalog of a weird multi-winged airplane built by Jones that had the distinction of using the very first Curtiss aviation motor. It was, of course, a total failure as can be seen by how it looked in the double-page color illustration; but Jones later went on to build a successful airship dirigible for which the propeller was provided by Curtiss.

This is a truly unique sample automobile sales catalog from 1925. It is an actual mock-up done by an illustrator using gouache and executed entirely by hand. It's not clear if the "Royal" automobile in question is an imaginary marque or has something to do with a car of the same name that was produced between 1906 - 1910. But we think this was just a generic marque that was used to show other manufacturers what this artist was able to offer. Contains 7 pages with text and hand drawn illustrations, plus 11 totally blank pages. The illustrations are quite beautiful as you can see.

It's so old that they were still using the term "motor carriage", which became shortened over the years to "car"! It contains 32 pages on high quality glossy stock with a number of photo illustrations. Page 31 is numbered 32, but this is a simple typo as we've compared it to another 1899 Winton catalog and that one was misnumbered as 32 as well.

Be that as it may, this fascinating catalog contains 24 richly illustrated pages of the various types of vehicles and motors offered for the 1902 season, and the testimonials on the back cover are both dated January, 1902, so it was actually published 122 years ago in 1901.

Lot: 22943 - 1897 Columbia automobile ephemera advert card rare

This is a very rare 126 year old advertising card promoting the 1897 Columbia Motor Carriage Mark lV with a beautiful photo illustration. Built by the Pope Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut, this exclusive "horseless carriage" was priced at $3,000 in 1897 and, according to the inflation calculator at the Dollar Times website, which only goes back to 1914, that $3,000 price was equivalent to $83, 641 in today's dollar, so in 1897 it was more than $90,000! For some strange reason, an ink-stamp for H. Hardison at the "Gazette and Courier office" was faintly stamped about 25 times on this card. It appears that Mr. Hardison must have had a rather serious case of obsessive-compulsive disorder (O.C.D.).

Lot: 22947 - c. 1900 automobile motorcycle ephemera folder rare

This is another one of those "impossible to find" pieces of ancient automobile or motorcycle ephemera. Since folders are far less attractive than comprehensive sales catalogs they were almost always thrown in the trash without further ado after looking at them once. This one is advertising or promoting Wetherbee Bros. "Jewelers and Cycle Dealers" of Arlington, Mass., and claims to be the "largest and best equipped Cycle Repair Station in town". The automobile they're riding in looks to be around 1900 and actually has a rudder or tiller instead of a steering wheel. It has 4 sides and that beautiful photo illustration on the front.

The Krieger photograph is stamped # 352 and also stamped (in French) from the "Society for the Development of Electric Vehicles". The second photo, though not identified, is obvious just as ancient, and the automobile club membership card is dated 1899. Needless to say, this is a VERY rare grouping of 3 of the oldest automobile items you are ever likely to see for sale.
