Lot: 308 - Meskwaki Wood Heddle, with Horses

Meskwaki Wood Heddle, with Horses mid-19th century height 8 inches x width 9-1/2 inches ...the carving of horseheads on wooden utensils and pipes has a long history among the Great Lakes Indians.  The prototype of these images is a dragon-like effigy carved on pipe bowls by these Indians.  Gradual change resulted in the stylized horseheads of the 1860s.  This stylistic convergence of dragon and horse was not accidental; horses were believed to have originated from the Underworld, the realm ruled over by a dragon-like deity. Native symbolism is often multi-layered though; by carving the two horse-heads nudging each other amorously the Mesquakie carver conveyed his warm feelings for the female recipient of this heddle (Brasser 2007) Included is a copy of a typed essay on Great Lakes heddles by Ted Brasser. Previously sold at Cowan's Auctions: American Indian and Western Art (March 31, 2007: lot 521).

Lot: 313 - Western Great Lakes Decorated Gunstock Club

Western Great Lakes Decorated Gunstock Club mid-19th century crafted from maple and decorated with triangular elements, a starburst, and thunderbird imagery on both sides; cast steel blade marked John Algor length 27-1/4 inches; overall length of blade (through wood) 10-1/2 inches Frequently engraved on the flat handle are images of mythical beings, human figures of slain enemies, and tally marks referring to specific war deeds. Mythical symbolism is most explicit on clubs originating from tribal organizations divided into dualistic divisions, associated with either sky or underworld. Gunstock clubs tend to picture images related to spiritual powers of the sky realm, such as the birds on this club. They are identified as thunderbirds by the lightning flashing from their heads. The sun or star-like design is a sky symbol by itself, but placed behind the metal blade on several similar clubs the design may also become the eye of a raptorial bird. It seems that the native owner of this club wished to proclaim the thunderbird either as his personal guardian spirit or as the symbol of his clan. Remarkable and unique is the identical decoration on both sides of this club. After the 1830s and the adoption of firearms the popularity of these clubs as weapons diminished, but they remained important as ceremonial batons carried by chiefs and respected war veterans, noticeable in several early portraits. Most likely this club is of Minnesota Sioux origin in the second half of the nineteenth century (Brasser: 2015). Exhibited: June 30-2015 - May 2016. Anishnaabek Art: Gift of the Great Lakes. Algonquian Ball Club, with Decorations mid-19th century having a notched triangular butt and finger-grooved handle; body of club profusely decorated with imagery of thunderbirds, horned panthers, horned serpents, and a variety of mystical birds length 21-1/2 inches Published: Dresslar, Jim. "The Ball-Headed Club of the North American Indian" in The American Society of Arms Collectors, Bulletin 59 (1988: 37). The duality of upper and lower worlds is likewise ubiquitous and particularly well developed among Algonquian-speaking groups such as the Menominee, whose hierarchical system has been described by Skinner (1921: 29-31).  Among the latter, the most powerful upper world being the sun, followed by the Thunderbirds, and the chief of the underworld was a Great White Bear with a long copper tail, followed by the great Underground Panther and Horned Hairy Serpent (Fox: 2004:  283). Silver and Stone: The Art of Michael Massie. The Provincial Art Gallery, St. John's, Newfoundland. Published: Hickey, Gloria: Silver and Stone: The Art of Michael Massie (2006: 52-53) [copy included] The crescent shape of the ulu has inspired the design on Michael Massie's silver work for at least the past ten years. It helped to establish his recognizable style of geometric shapes, elegant lines, and a contemporary character for Inuit art. Both boa-tea (1996) and gray tea (1996) are based on ulu forms, although strikingly different...gray tea is irregular, squat, and has a vertical, carved walrus tusk handle. The ulu shape is discernible from above, but from the rear, it is a cubist's adept collision of angles. From the side, the squat silver form sits on [walrus] feet that, according to Massie, take the inspiration from Marvin the Martian, a cartoon character from Bugs Bunny. "Whenever Marvin got zapped all you could see was his feet poking out from under his helmet--that's the Martian look I wanted." (Silver and Stone, 2006: 52)
