Lot: 5 - David Hockney (b. 1937) England, Lithograph

This is a lithograph (C. 1979) by British artist, David Hockney (b. 1937). This "Artcurial" piece features Gregory Evans. It is pencil signed in the lower right. Hockney studied at Bradford College of Art in 1957, and in 1962 at the Royal College of Art. He has had numerous one-man shows including at the Kasmin Gallery, 1963-1989; in New York at the Museum of Modern Art in 1964 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1988; the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Holland in 1966; and the Tate Gallery in London in 1988. He has also been a stage set designer for the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He has lectured at the University of Iowa, the University of Colorado, Berkeley, and UCLA. Overall Size: 39 x 27 in. Lot: 6 - Andy Warhol, 'Ladies and Gentlemen' Silkscreen '75

Limited edition of 125 silkscreen prints from the 'Ladies and Gentlemen' series 1975, by Andy Warhol (Amer, 1928-1987), on Arches wove paper. No visible signature or edition number, but has not been removed from the frame. Encouraged to produce a series of screen prints of drag queens by the art dealer Luciano Anselmino, Warhol invited a number of transvestites to his studio to be photographed. Under Warhol's instruction, Bob Colacello recruited a number of willing black and Hispanic participants from the night club The Gilded Grape in Greenwich Village. Warhol considered drag queens to be the ultimate expression of the movie star presence he sought to capture. These individuals drew heavily on the Hollywood idols before them and dedicated their lives to the performance of their self-fashioned personas, becoming manufactured cultural icons in their own right. Abstract expressionist modern lithograph on paper, numbered 19/20 and signed lower right. Divided into three sections, each with colorful abstract imagery on a white field. As an Abstract Expressionist painter, Sam Francis is regarded as one of the 20th century's leading interpreters of color and light. His first works were influenced by Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still, however he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. Francis was not only a distinguished exponent of Action Painting, he also explored graphic media such as lithography, etching and monotype. His preoccupation with printmaking led to the production of striking experimental work in the early 1980s. Born in San Mateo, California, the artist taught himself to paint while he was encased for three years in a full-body cast, the result of an acute case of spinal tuberculosis. Over his 50-year, wildly successful career, Francis made over 10,000 artworks, starred in more than 100 solo exhibitions, and in the late 1950s to mid-1960s, commanded the highest prices of any living painter. From the series 'This is Not a Book', 1997 offset litho, unsigned, by Helen Frankenthaler. Overall size: 9 1/4 x 15 1/4 in. Sight size: 4 x 10 in. Abstract Expressionist painter, Helen Frankenthaler, began pursuing printmaking in the early 1960s. The idea for This Is Not A Book arose from Frankenthaler’s long-held desire to produce prints for a bound volume. However, without a text to illustrate and continually unable to find anything appropriate, it appeared to be an impossible project. Frankenthaler began without a text to create "this book that is not a book" over a period of two years in close collaboration with the master printmaker Kenneth Tyler. Frankenthaler began the project in November 1995, working on it over a period of two years. The prints were produced in close collaboration with the master printmaker Kenneth Tyler with whom she has worked regularly.

Lot: 19 - Dan Corbin (b 1947) American, M/M Sculpture

From the "Walking Series" Mixed media of metals and composition materials of a headless and armless figure in walking stride, sculpture done by Dan Corbin. Signed and dated '95 on the back. Dan Corbin was born in 1947 and was primarily influenced creatively by the 1960s. Art turned into a vehicle for ideologies and other agendas, with Pop and Minimalism appearing simultaneously as the most significant art movements of the decade. Size: 25 x 10 x 50 in.

Lot: 19A - Joan Miro (1893 - 1983) Spain, Lithograph

Lithograph by Joan Miro bought in 1974 by Louis and Shirley Hecht of Baltimore, Md. at Poligrafa Obra Grafica in Barcelona when on a trip to Spain. This was the atelier that printed this work for Joan Miro. The work in its original plexiglass frame. Joan Miro was born in Barcelona, Spain on April 20, 1893, the son of a watchmaker. From 1912 he studied at the Barcelona Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Gali. In the first quarter of the 20th century, Barcelona was a cosmopolitan, intellectual city with a craving for the new in art, music and literature. But it was not the place where great art was being made. That place was Paris and Miro established himself there at the age of twenty-six. He made friends with Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Ernest Hemingway, Max Ernst and Paul Klee and was accepted as a Surrealist, looking stronger as the years went by. He lived alone in Paris in total poverty, but everytime he went out he wore a monocle and white spats. He kept his brushes clean, waxed and polished the floor of his studio and arranged his canvases in neat order. Size: 33 x 23 1/2 in.

Lot: 19B - Julie Mehretu (b 1970) Ethiopian/Am, Aquatint

Titled, ‘Local Calm’, 2005, Sugar lift aquatint with color aquatint, soft ground and hard ground etching and engraving on Gamp paper, numbered 35/35, pencil-signed and dated 2005. Born in Ethiopia, Julie Mehretu is an artist who creates abstractions with layer after layer of markings that appear to be fragments of architectural plans. Her work is related to the Russian movement of Constructivism and suggests the life of a city---cars, people, and buildings. It reflects much of what she observes from her Harlem studio and home. Overall size: 38 1/4 x 50 1/2 in. Sight size: 36 x 48 in.

Robert Rauschenberg became one of the major artists of his generation and is credited along with Jasper Johns of breaking the stronghold of Abstract Expressionism. Rauschenberg was known for assemblage, conceptualist methods, printmaking, and willingness to experiment with non-artistic materials--all innovations that anticipated later movements such as Pop Art, Conceptualism, and Minimalism. Lot: 24 - Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) American, Litho Card

Titled, 'Little Tree', 1992, four color lithograph, edition of 1000, unsigned. Litho card printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd., with Kenneth Tyler's signature verso. Known for her highly emotive gestural abstraction, Joan Mitchell was one of the most prominent members of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists. Mitchell painted highly structured, large-scale compositions featuring vibrant, violent bursts of color and light, often influenced by landscape painting and informed by her emotional understanding of the world around her. Mitchell was one of the only female artists of her generation to achieve critical and public acclaim, and her work was featured in the famous Ninth Street Show of 1951, which introduced the world to the emerging American avant-garde. Mitchell was a devoted student of art as well as a talented painter; she developed an intimate understanding of color through her admiration of the work of Henri Matisse and Vincent van Gogh and adapted the gestural abstraction of her day to create an art form completely her own, and continued her investigation of abstraction for the rest of her career. Her work has influenced subsequent generations of artists and is featured in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and many of the world’s most distinguished institutions. Lot: 25 - Manuel Neri (b 1930) American, MM/Paper

Titled, "Gesture Study No. 44", mixed media on paper, abstract nude, 1980. Manuel Neri was born in Sanger, California, and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and in San Francisco at the California School of Fine Arts. He has been featured worldwide in numerous group and solo exhibitions in museums and private galleries. He is one of the only figurative sculptors to have been connected with the acclaimed 1950s-1960s San Francisco Bay Area figurative painters. Initially, Neri began sculpting in "junk" burlap, wire, and cardboard and then plaster. His style is unique he creates a figure, most often the same female used in a variety of poses and then paints it with vibrant colors using very lush and expressive brush strokes. His mediums include bronze, marble, graphite, oil-stick, and plaster. Overall size: 20 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. Paper size: 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. Sight size: 12 x 8 in.

Stanislav Libensky (1921-2002) Czech Republic artist. Glass sculpture titled: "Angled Jardiniere" and dated 1975. Displayed in the book "S Libensky - A 40 Year Collaboration in Glass - J. Brychtova." Stanislav Libensky, originally a painter and later a glass artist. Libensky worked with his wife, Jaroslava Brychtova on several pieces. He would paint, and she would form it out of clay. Stanislav Libensky began his study of glass in 1937 at the Specialized School of Glassmaking in Novy Bor, Czechoslovakia, a region encompassing the Czech-German border called the Sudetenland. Lot: 31 - Fulvio Bianconi (1915-1996) Ital, Art Glass Vase

Multi-colored, handblown art glass vase, etch-signed, dated and numbered on bottom: Venini Fulvio Bianconi, 1992/305. Fulvio Bianconi was active/lived in Italy, and is known for glass design, illustration, and caricature. He came to Murano to study glass techniques and met Paolo Venini. Venini spotted the incredible talent and hired him in 1947. Fulvio Bianconi became the most successful designer of the Golden Age of Italian glass: post WW2 to 1969. Bianconi brought a sensuality and colorful excitement to glass. All of his shapes are derived from the female form in some way. He created the pezzati (patches) series, which became Venini's most popular design, still produced today. Other designs include sasso, fasce orrizontali, sirena, and the extremely rare bikini vase. His numerous pieces are highly collectible and well documented. Size: 12 x 6 1/4 in.

A wonderful combination of caricature and Picasso’s classic cubism in a very large etching. This piece could easily be a centerpiece of a modern art collection. Total edition size is 50 numbered (regular edition) and 18 proofs for the artist and publisher. The plates were completed and proofed in 1971, about 2 years before Picasso died. The etchings were printed before 1975 and published in 1978. Reference: Bloch, Picasso Project: Catalogue of the Printed Graphic Works, Volume 4, Revised Edition from 2004, 1963, p. 70. Titled, 'Mexican Marketplace', Early Abstract Expressionism, circa 1950, oil pastel, signed lower right. This piece dates to the time spent in Mexico with famed artist Diego Rivera. Yonia Fain was an internationally acclaimed artist, poet, author and educator, known for Holocaust painting. Born in the Ukraine, as a young child his family fled Bolshevik Russia and moved to Poland. At the time of the Nazi invasion of Poland, he escaped on foot to Russia where he was conscripted into the army as an artist. Refusing to create propaganda art, he escaped to Japan via Siberia. As the war ended, Yonia determined to move to Mexico and to connect with the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Rivera was impressed by Yonia’s work, and became his champion even curating exhibitions of Fain’s work and writing catalog essays as well. During those years (1947-1953), Yonia taught at the University of Mexico and was commissioned to do a number of major murals. The artist's wife, Mary explained, He woke me in the night and said, I am going to make a Wish Keeper. I've seen it in a dream. The dream showed the vessel which sits on a distinctive base and has a lid formed like bamboo, representing strength and flexibility. When lifting the lid a silk cord is revealed with an inner chamber which holds a parchment with your written wish. The ancient symbol on the seal represents good fortune and abundance. When he first saw the symbol on the finial of a lamp, he knew it was the one that would become the Wish Keeper's seal.
