In 1884 he moved to the Holbein Studios where he befriended George Inness, who would greatly influence the young Daingerfield. Daingerfield first visited Blowing Rock, North Carolina in 1886 to recover from a severe case of diphtheria. Mesmerized by the mountains of North Carolina, he would spend most summers for the remainder of his life in Blowing Rock. He and his family built two grand summer homes in the community, Windwood and Westglow. Back in New York, Daingerfield was a burgeoning art star. He exhibited frequently, included in exhibitions at the National Academy of Design and the Salmagundi Club. In 1910 he was commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad to paint scenes of the Grand Canyon. He traveled west again a couple of years later, this time with his family, in 1912 to paint additional Western landscapes. One of these, Trees on the Canyon Rim, was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. He settled in Philadelphia, enrolling in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he studied with Thomas Anshutz. He furthered his studies in Paris, beginning at the Académie Julian, followed by the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Colarossi. Upon his return from Paris in 1903, Gorson returned to Pennsylvania, this time settling in Pittsburgh. A teacher recognized Brenner's artistic ability at a young age and advocated for his admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Brenner's father refused to allow his son to enroll and trained him as a glazier. The Brenner family immigrated to the United States in 1853. After a brief few months in New Orleans, they settled in Louisville, Kentucky. For the next decade, Brenner found work as a glazier, house painter and sign painter. In 1863, Brenner was commissioned by the Masonic Hall of Louisville to paint a series of panoramic Civil War scenes. This encouraged Brenner to paint more landscapes of his adopted homeland. Sam Middleton (American, 1927-2015), Shostakovitch - Concerto Op. 101 lithograph in colors, 1972, pencil signed, dated, and numbered 68/75, from the series Everybody's Music Book, with full margins, unframed. Sheet size 20 x 25 3/4 in. Sam Middleton left his native Harlem in New York City to travel the world in the merchant marine. Still a wanderer in mid-1950s, he was gaining recognition abroad as a serious and talented visual artist. Like many Black Americans before him, Middleton found some comfort circulating in societies less racially sensitive than the United States. As a result, he became an expatriate and built his career while living in Amsterdam. Middleton has received international critical acclaim for over fifty years. Jean-Joseph-Marie-Anatole Marquet de Vasselot, also known as Count Anatole Marquet de Vasselot was a French sculptor and uncle of Jean-Jacques Marquet de Vasselot (1871-1946), the French archaeologist and art historian and curator at the Louvre. Count Anatole Marquet de Vasselot trained in drawing and sculpture under François Jouffroy, painter Léon Bonnat, Charles-Auguste Lebourg, and Guillaume Bonnet. He produced dozens of busts of religious and civil figures, including Abraham Lincoln, Balzac, and Lamartine. He designed animal subjects for the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, and made four busts for the south facade of the Rouen library. From 1874 to 1882, Count Anatole Marquet de Vasselot became inspector of drawing education for the department of the Seine. He would go on to receive many awards and merits including being named Knight of the Legion of Honor; Grand Officer of the Order of Isabella the Catholic; Grand-cross of military merit from Spain, among others. Maximilien Louis Fiot (French, 1886-1953), Panthers at Rest 20th century, carved white marble, incised "M. Foit" signature to base. 16 1/2 x 26 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. Born in Touraine (Le Grand-Pressigny), Maximilien Louis Fiot had a successful career as a naturalist Animalier sculptor working in bronze, terracotta, and stone. Preferred subjects included birds, horses, dogs, felines and wild animals native to the French forests. He was apprenticed under the sculptor Prosper Lecourtier. At eighteen years old, Fiot's first entry at the ‘Salon des Artistes Français’ was a plaster dog. In 1905, he was awarded a medal of honour, a bronze medal in 1911, and a silver medal in 1913. Fiot worked on several war memorials after WWI. He continued to exhibit at the ‘Salon des Artistes Français’, becoming a member in the 1920s. The majority of his work was produced in bronze, by the Susse foundry using the lost wax process. Some of his earlier bronzes were cast by other foundries. He also cast some original terracottas, which were possibly preparatory studies for his stone pieces. He often features animals in pairs or in groups. At the 1933 Salon, he won a gold medal, which placed him hors concours, that is, excluded him to compete in future competitions. He continued working until his death in 1953 in Corbeil in Essonne. Félix-Maurice Charpentier was a French figural sculptor who studied at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris with French Academic sculptor and professor Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814-1896). He won several medals exhibiting at the Exposition Universelle and the Paris Salon. Examples of his oeuvre can be found in the collections of the Grand Palais in Paris and the Place des Quinconces in Bordeaux. Le Maison Colin was a prestigious Parisian foundry, working with many of the top Parisian bronziers of the era. Sculpture dimensions 24 x 18 x 12 in.; Plinth 5 x 9 1/2 (excluding rod) At 15 years old, Pasquale Romanelli entered the studio runned by Master Sculptor Luigi Pampaloni and later moved to Lorenzo Bartolini’s studio in Borgo San Frediano. After Bartolini passed, Pasquale was often selected to complete the projects of Barolini's studio. Best known for his sculptures of allegorical, biblical and mythological figures of women, Romanelli also created monumental works including the monument to Vittorio Fossombroni for the Piazza di S. Francesco in Arezzo (1863) and the monument of Count Alessandro Masi for the Certosa of Ferrara (1864). He exhibited his works Ruth and La Delusa in Paris in 1851. His work La Delusa was bought by the Hermitage Museum in St Petersberg. The Museo Poldi in Milan has a bust by Romanelli of Bartolini, and another bust of Bartolini can be found in the church of the Santa Croce in Florence. (male) In 1838, Georges-Alphonse-Bonifacio Monbro, called Monbro Ainé (1807-1884), assumed control of the French atelier founded by his father, Georges-Marie-Paul-Vital-Bonifacio Monbro (1774-1841). The firm had developed a strong reputation for creating luxury goods in various popular revival styles of the period for the European elite including cabinetry, furniture, bronzes, porcelains, tapestries, sculptures, and curiosities. The shop was located at 18, Rue Basse-du-Rempart. During Haussmann’s renovation of Paris, he had to move and set up in Rue du Helder, in the Hôtel Dudon. In 1855, he exhibited at the Exposition des Produits de l'industrie Française as well as the Exposition Universell. Monbro's prestigious register of clients included Madame la Duchesse de Berry, Louis-Philippe, the Palais de Saint-Cloud, and other Royal commissions. In 1861, the business's success at the time enabled Georges to open a second location in London at Frith Street, Soho Square. By 1788 he was in London and encouraged by Joshua Reynolds to study at the Royal Academy of Arts. The following year he exhibited for the first time at the Academy and in 1800 he was elected a Royal Academician. Shee was a successful portrait artist, producing historical and genre scenes as well. He was chosen president of the Royal Academy in 1830 following the death of Sir Thomas Lawrence. He was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and served as the first president of the Birmingham Society of Artists. Lady Sarah Bayley (1779-1852) was the youngest daughter of George Bussy Villiers, 4th Earl of Jersey. She married Charles Nathaniel Bayley in 1799. Lady Bayley was included in the "Gallery of Beauties," a series of portraits commissioned by George IV as Prince Regent. The present painting is documented in the records of the Frick Digital Collections. Stretcher size 44 x 35 in.; Frame dimensions 49 3/4 x 40 1/2 in. Joseph Severn was an English portrait and history painter. He is perhaps best remembered now as a close personal friend of the famous English poet John Keats. In 1820, Severn accompanied Keats to Rome and served as his nurse for the remaining three months of Keats' brief life. Severn remained in Rome following Keats' death and forged a successful career as an artist. He was instrumental in the co-founding the British Academy of the Fine Arts in Rome. He proved a versatile talent, exhibiting history paintings, portraits, landscapes, and miniatures. He also received commissions for altarpieces and frescoes. Severn returned to England in 1841 and traveled throughout the country, painting portraits to support his family. In 1843 he was invited to Eglinton Castle in Scotland to paint the portraits of Lady Eglinton and her three year old son. Theresa Newcomen, Countess of Eglinton and Winton, was the half-sister of Severn's wife, Elizabeth Montgomerie. The two families were close, with the earl and countess providing some financial and professional support for the Severn family. This portrait depicts a beautiful Lady Eglinton draped in diamonds and pearls and holding a pink and white striped camellia. In her lap sits her oldest son, Archibald William Montgomerie, the future 14th earl. Her son is depicted in the midst of clasping a bejeweled snake bracelet on his mother's wrist. Jewelry with serpent motifs reached the zenith of their popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria. Snake jewels during the Victorian era symbolized everlasting love, wisdom and power. Severn's paintings can today be found in some of the most important museums in London, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Britain. Frame dimensions 46 1/2 x 35 in. (192 lbs) Eren Eyuboglu was born in Romania, but most closely associated as a Turkish artist. She began her studies in Romania, but left for Paris in 1929. She spent the next four years studying at the Académie Julian and André Lhote. In 1934, she and her new husband moved to Istanbul. They were both active in "The Group D," a collection of Turkish artists open to new and modern artistic trends. Eyuboglu found her greatest inspiration in depicting the Anatolian people and preserving their traditional way of life in a modern stylized pictorial manner. She and her husband both embraced the ancient manner of mosaic. While many of her commissioned murals exist throughout Turkey, individual mosaics rarely come to market. A solo exhibition of Eyuboglu's paintings was mounted in 2018 - 2019 at CerModern in Ankara, Turkey, to highlight the important role of this modern woman artist.
