Lot: 6 - After Pierre-Jospeh Redoute, Floral Print, #39 Fraisier a Bouquets ( Strawberry Fruit )

Modern print, after Pierre-Joseph Redoute ( French 1759-1840 ) Original Redoute stipple engravings with hand-coloring bring thousands of dollars per print. This modern re-print was created in the 1980's. 11" X 14". Comes with mat & backboard ready to frame. Redoute is unquestionably the best-known botanical illustrator of any era. The decorative appeal of his original engravings led to their modern reproduction, which in turn popularized Redoute's work in a way unique among botanical artists. Born into a family of artists in what is now Belgium, Redoute's talent was recognized & encouraged from an early age. Eventually, Redoute had, as pupils or patrons, five queens & empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to the Empress Josephine & her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, eventually contributing to over fifty works on natural history & archeology. The luminosity of stipple engraving, a technique perfected by Redoute, is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redoute provided.

Lot: 15 - 1994 Jaguar XJS V-12 Convertible

Original “survivor” condition car in Glacier White with the following packages: *Sport handling package (featuring aluminum alloy 16 inch wheels in trim matching accents) *All weather package (features headlight washers) *Sport Paint package (much of chrome trim replaced with matching white painted surfaces) *6.0 liter V-12 engine *4 speed automatic transmission *Power top Mileage is 81,124 original miles This car has been renewed mechanically back to daily driver condition. V-12 and transmission completely sorted by Rocco’s European Garage in Atlanta Georgia in 2019. Over 10K invested (receipts accompany the car to prove that) to bring the car up to safety and drivability standards. This includes: New brakes/Kelly Edge 225/50/16 tires/all lights and signals work/AC and heat work as normal along with repair to all engine and transmission issues that needed repair/replacing. Transmission was completely rebuilt from the ground up, so its as brand new. Engine was about 75% rebuilt and all issues were addressed/renewed to daily driver status. Only known issues are: power top was working but quit in December-diagnosed as a new top motor being needed ($250 on ebay). Battery may need replacing as it has not been driven hardly at all, and kept mostly on a trickle charger over the winter in a heated garage. It is charging, but Jaguars require a HUGE cold crank charge to start up properly, a solidly charging battery is essential. Interior is survivor quality with some of the burlwood bits needing re-covering with clearcoat, and the seats need a deep leather conditioning/cleaning-but all are certainly renewable with effort. There is one spill on the back seat bench (passenger side) that will need professional leather restoration. All original mats come with the car. It will need a new floor carpet kit if completely restoring it to new. Glass is all good including convertible top glass. Exterior is survivor quality and has been professionally buffed as much as possible. It will obviously need a respray with complete restoration, but as is, I’d call it a 6 (on a 1-10 scale). No rust anywhere that I can see, and the lower front bumper facia has 2 fiberglass cracks to be repaired (both look very simple and straightforward—an area most of these cars have that same issue) This is a very rare car in a very rare color/package combo. It certainly needs restoration and would be a beautiful candidate for a “lipstick” style restoration. The car, beyond a new top motor, is mechanically ready for many more years of service. Like most high performance cars, it simply needs to be driven more than the current owner can ever do. It needs an owner that can put another 10K into paint and interior bits can make this car a stunning example of British Luxury Performance.

Vintage Folk Art oil painting on animal skin by an artist from Tigua Equador. Village Scene. 13 3/4" X 9 3/4". In very good condition, the skin having no damage. Signed by the artist, lower middle section. Tigua artists high in the Ecuadorian Andes are renowned for their colorful paintings of rural life. Their delightful folk art, painted with chicken feather brushes on sheep hide, celebrates their mountain life with its festivals, legends, and traditions dating back centuries. It started decades ago with a single folk artist living in Tigua – Julio Toaquiza. The men in his village had a long tradition of painting masks and drums. An art dealer in Quito asked Julio to paint on a flat surface and a new school was born. Today, there are several generations of Toaquizas painting in the “naif” style of Tigua – bright and colorful compositions that portray the agricultural lifestyle of the local population. Many of my favorites include the Volcano Cotopaxi, llamas roaming the hillsides with shepherd in tow, women spinning wool outside their homes, and condors flying high above it all. The best paintings include a little of everything so that each time you look, you see a new detail.

This refers to the territory lying north of the Rio Grande. "When the present work on Birds of America was projected, we felt that the time was at last ripe for a new book on the subject that should be a final repository of all the vast treasure of scattered information. What was clearly needed, was to make a thorough canvass of the field and produce a work at once popular and scientific, and at the same time comprehensive -- a record of our wild birds. The official check list of the American Ornithologists' Union has been followed for classification. We have tried, in a word, to present a complete picture and story of our feathered wild bird life." ..T. Gilbert Pearson, President of the National Assoc. of Audubon Societies.

12th - 14th Century A.D. Medieval Byzantine trachy "cup" coin. 20-28 mm diameter. 2.82 gram weight.    Trachy or "cup" coins are odd shaped coins looking like they could have been formed by taking a normal coin & pushing a thumb into the center of the coin. Stuck during the 11th-14th centuries, no one is certain why they were made in this shape, but most likely to reduce counterfeiting. Many of these coins are made of a mixture of copper and billon ( a debased silver, sometimes about 20% ) but most of the time the amount of silver was so small the coins would mainly appear as copper or bronze. Because of their shape, the picture inside the bowl gets less wear than the outside design. Many of these coins depict Christ wearing a halo (nimbate) on the outside, or sometimes Mother Mary. The inside usually had a depiction of the Emperor often with his Empress.

Photos courtesy of the New York State Museum. "There have been recorded in North America eight hundred distinct species of wild birds, and four hundred additional subspecies, or climatic varieties.
