Lot: 1001 - 17TH C. ENGLISH SILK & BULLION NEEDLEWORK UPHOLSTERED MIRROR FRAME

A Beautifully Decorated Looking Glass frame, first half of the 17th c., having an arched and blocked top, blocked bottom, oval lady's portrait at top, the corners featuring stag, unicorn, lion and leopard in ovals with fleur-de-lis corners, spaced by blossoms, representation of a sundial at bottom center. Bead feet at bottom, underframe is pine. 20 3/4" x 18", opening: 8 1/2" x 11 1/4". Light wear and fading, but remarkably intact. Condition commensurate with age and use.

15th c. English Oak Plaque, depicting a recumbent manticore (a lion-like beast with human facial features and tail of venomous spines - a mythical creature often illustrated in Medieval art), probably from a country church as images such as this were important symbols in Medieval Christianity, 9" x 8 1/4". Condition commensurate with age.

Circa 1600 Three-Tier Oak Open Cupboard, used to display dining serving items and valuables; with molded edge overhanging top, intricately carved frieze and shelf edges, bulbous carved cup and cover support columns, 53 3/4" high, 52" x 19 1/2". Condition commensurate with age and use.

Lot: 1004 - LARGE DATED 1603 GERMAN RENAISSANCE BRONZE PHARMACY MORTAR

Massive and Remarkably Heavy Solid Bronze Grinding Mortar, German, probably Regensburg foundry region, having deep molding (with one original gap), single remaining dolphin lug, the front having raised inscription "SHZ (the last initial partly obliterated with spiteful intent)/SCF/AO/1603", centered on the German Heraldic Shield, 12 1/2" x 11 1/2" diam., 13 1/2" at lug. Handsome patina. Condition commensurate with age and use.

Lot: 1005 - ENGLISH CHARLES I PERIOD DATED 1648 WEDDING CHAIR

Sturdy English Oak Armchair with crested back and dated rail, the molded back panel having carved initials 'NC' & 'IC' flanking a heart, substantial squared frame with tapered plank seat, shaped plank arms ending in a square pierced by the supporting posts, the front legs with mitered corner relief, broad well worn stretchers at floor level, all wood peg construction, museum accession no. 1961.160 painted on back, 16 1/4" seat, 25" arms, 37 1/2" back, 28" x 22". Wonderful patina. Condition commensurate with age and use.

"Nuremberg. Norenberga, urbs nobilissima, totius quasi Germaniae centrum publicis privatisque aedificijs". Copperplate engraving on wove paper from Braun and Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" around 1580, a panoramic view of the city with noble figures in the foreground and three large coats of arms above. Many buildings are identified. In black stick frame, glazed, OS: 14" x 21", SS: 12 1/2" x 19 1/2". Toned, foxed.

Cast Iron Fireplace Back, with embossed crest of Philip II (1527-1598), husband of Mary I (1516-1558); topped with his motto "Dominus Mihi Adiutor" (The Lord is My Help), with crown above a crest flanked by a mirrored pair of rampant lions, 25" high, 29 1/2" wide. Three-Tiered Chandelier with turned central stem suspended from a three lobed ring, solid brass large ring chain, fifteen snake scrolled arms, flanked and backed by floral blossom reflectors, ten arms in the bottom rank, five in the intermediate, spun bobeches, all components fitted to lift-out keys in the stem, punch marked with dots for location, the lowest portion of the stem ending in a pierced sphere, 27" tall (excluding chain), 23" diam, very good condition.

Qing Dynasty, probably Kangxi Period, circa 1662–1722; a Large Vase with slightly squared shoulder, large neck, Sang de Boeuf with purple flambe and speckling, thick rippled glaze with deliberately chipped glaze run off at the foot as was the fashion, rougher mossy interior glaze, 15" x 9", includes vintage rosewood carved stand. Hairline crack length of the neck. Includes Jan. 1926 letter from John Wanamaker to buyer Henry H. Hanton of Lancaster, PA, giving specifics of this piece. "This porcelain vase with the celebrated "Sang de Boeuf" glaze was made only in the short period when the famous Lang was director of the Imperial kilns at Ching-te-Chen during the reign of K'Ang H Shi. The bluish runs portray the lights of the blood before the air strikes it. As you will observe this particular vase has not the smooth glaze but the very unusual finish." Also includes color cut of vases sent with the letter and a copy of the front page article on this man's collection in the May 2, 1938 Lancaster, Pa. Sunday News.

All in good shape with minor staining, loose stitching, base fabric still supple.
