Framed watercolor and ink painting on paper, "Guerre de Secession Colonel de Cavalerie-Sudistes" (War of Secession [Civil War] - Southern Cavalry Colonel), signed lower center Eugene Leliepvre (French, 1908-2013), sight: 12"h, 9"w, overall: 20"h, 17"w, 4.5lbs **Note: born in 1908, Leliepvre experienced the tragedy and exodus of the Great War (World War I), and as a child attended the French Cavalry charge in the cobbled streets of Lille. There he decided his vocation: military historian. Eugene Leliepvre painted military subjects for over fifty years. In 1950, he was made the Official Painter to the French Army and he is also a fellow of the Company of Military Historians and Knight of the Legion of Honour. He specialized in uniforms of the old regime. He continued to paint in his studio in Montrouge. Lover of all forms of beauty, the feminine side of his work really came out from 1930-1940, a significant part of his production included over 150 portraits of these ideal beautiful women, presented in all their elegance from the imagination of Eugene Leliepvre. Eugene Leliepvre is also known for his equestrian hunts and animal paintings. He was for 40 years the French collaborator Hunter, and illustrated, 23 years on, the Manufrance calendar. He fell in love with the uniforms and equipment of the American Civil War, and painted many scenes of the men, the battles, and their equipment. As an experienced old school military artist, it appears that he was more enamored with the Southern Cause as he seemed to paint more Confederates than Union Soldiers. Model maker and figurist, he also created numerous dioramas for the Maritime Museum of Paris and fashioned (assisted by his wife) over 300 small mannequins in costumes and equipment of yesteryear. Canada's share of this collection earned him, in 2008, the highest award in North America: "The Star Service Award to distinguished Military Historians of the Company." An acknowledged expert on 18th century military subjects, he was married and lived in Paris. In a surprising diversity of talent, the motto of this discrete titan was: "Making the best regardless of the past." Start Price: $400.00
