George Montgomery was married to Dinah Shore, the American singer, actress and television personality, from 1943 until 1963. Born Frances Rose Shore, she did embrace the stage name Dinah until 1940, accounting for the quotations on the inscription. Known for their realism, painterly brushwork and use of dramatic chiaroscuro, the Munich School was a highly regarded group of artists in late 19th century Europe. Associated with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Munich, the art that emerged from this association of painters depicted scenes of landscapes, history, battle and everyday life with drama and intricate detail.Alfred Wierusz Kowalski (Polish, 1849-1915) was perhaps the most popular Polish artist of this group. Born in Suwalki, Poland, the pastoral setting of much of Kowalski's oeuvre was inspired more by the scenery of his childhood than by his environs in Germany. However, his choice of subject matter "“ hunting, traveling, horse riding "“ along with his bold brushwork, emotional compositions and attentiveness to detail made him a success amongst collectors and critics alike. Kowalski's skill earned him exhibitions in Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Paris and Vienna, as well as an honorary position at the Royal Academy. At first glance, Return from the Hunt is a rather simple scene, with a hunter on horseback accompanied by his two loyal dogs. However, upon closer inspection, the scene becomes a bit more dramatic. Situated in a desolate landscape, the hunter stares ahead with a look of sheer defeat, as if he has been totally drained from his efforts. His face is deeply saddened, his eyes sunken, his expression dazed; even his horse appears exhausted. One small fox is his only bounty from a long, cold day on the hunt. In the background, his companion, or perhaps his competition, appears to have had even less luck. The composition "“ his choices in color palette, the arrangement and realism of the figures as well as detailed facial expression on the hunter "“ turns an everyday scene of pastoral life into a possibility of a more dismal scene.Return from the Hunt demonstrates the aesthetics of the Munich School through a scene that may have been pulled directly from Kowalski's childhood in Poland. As a viewer we can never know exactly what happened on that hunt. Kowalski's skillful artistry, however, gives us just enough information to understand that there is more to the scene than what meets the eye.

Lot: 387 - Thomas Hill (British/American, 1829-1908) Indian on Horseback Amongst Sequoias

Thomas Hill (British/American, 1829-1908) Indian on Horseback Amongst Sequoias oil on canvas signed T. Hill (lower right) 39 x 27 1/2 inches Property from the Estate of Max and Judith Benton, Prescott, AZ Provenance: Sullivan Goss Fine Art Gallery, Santa Barbara, California Although he was born in England and spent much of his young adult life on the East coast of the United States, Thomas Hill's (British/American, 1829-1908) greatest source of inspiration was the landscape of the American West. Revered by collectors of the Hudson River School and Western art alike, Thomas Hill's paintings illustrate the vast beauty and grandeur of the American landscape.Sketching trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire early in his career aligned Hill with members of the Hudson River School who valued the practice of plein-air painting. Throughout his career, Hill would use the technique of oil sketching en plein-air "“ creating small, sketch-like oil paintings while immersed in the scenery "“ to document the sources of his inspiration.Like many other Americans, Hill moved his family to California in 1861 in search of prosperity and new sources of inspiration. It was with this change of scenery that Thomas Hill developed into the artist we revere as a great American landscape painter. The rising mountains, rolling hills, towering forests and lush scenery were his muses and his work was driven by his absolute awe of nature. In his lifetime, Thomas Hill's monumental landscape paintings were well received, earning him comparison to Albert Bierstadt. His patrons included some of the most important figures in 19th-century California business and society, including E.B Crocker, William Ralston, D.O. Mills and Leland Stanford. In his Indian on Horseback Amongst the Sequoias, Hill beautifully depicts the overwhelming size, vastness and splendor of the Sequoia National Forest of California. Though a more intimate scene than many of his works, this image delivers the same sense of monumentality that we see in his depictions of the Yosemite landscape. The size and density of the trees dwarves the figures of the Native Americans making their camp and illustrates just how small humans really are compared to nature. Hill's technique of detailing the figures in the foreground, while placing slightly less emphasis on the background, helps to show just how massive and lush the forest really is. This is a technique that Hill employed often in his work, almost as if implying that the grandness of nature is too large to depict precisely or to understand fully. Hill was driven by his own experiences within the natural world, by his own sense of smallness amongst the spectacular, sprawling landscapes. Indian on Horseback Amongst the Sequoias encourages the viewer to feel totally immersed in the scenery and experience the sense of awe and wonder that drove Thomas Hill to create his renowned works of art.

These paintings were studies for two works in the Oklahoma Arts Institute's Quartz Mountain Art Collection Walking Tour. The Past Down from Yellowstone "This painting depicts the Kiowa leaving the ancestral homeland near the headwaters of the Yellowstone River in western Montana. From here, the Kiowa migrated eastward to the Black Hills before finally settling on the Great Plains. Being attentive to historical detail, Larsen is careful not to include a horse, as the animal had not yet been introduced to the Kiowa at the time of their migration. Larsen's detailed rendering of the clothing adds vitality to the work and is also historical in depiction." The Past Kiowa Sundance "The most sacred of Kiowa ceremonies, the Sundance, is said to have taken place at Quartz Mountain. In this painting, the Sundance "pledge" or participant stands inside a cottonwood arbor painted with white clay and Kiowa symbols. Larsen also includes other symbolic attributes in this work, such as the sage at the head and wrists of the pledge and the eagle bone whistles worn by both the pledge and the elder next to him."

These renowned horsemen were comprised of Kiowa leaders from ten different clans, each of whom was responsible for carrying one of the ten sacred Kiowa medicine bundles." The Past Black Leggings Society "In this work, Larsen portrays four members of the Kiowa Black Leggings Society, a group of Kiowa individuals who are veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The Kiowa elders who are the subject of this painting are members of the Palmer family of Carnegie, Oklahoma. Gus Palmer, Sr. revived this warrior society in 1957. Each year, the Black Leggings society visits the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute to present the colors in a ceremony prior to student performances."

Somogi was considered America's first great female conductor. Viewers are reminded of the exceptional music program available to Oklahoma's high school students at Quartz Mountain." The Future American Masters "A salute to the visual artists who have taught at Quartz Mountain, Larsen depicts painter Fritz Scholder and sculptor Allan Houser in the foreground with examples of their work. Oklahoma photographer David Fitzgerald stands in the background to the far right. Larsen places himself in the painting behind his close friend Houser, who had passed away several years earlier. The Quartz Mountain Art Collection contains works by both Scholder and Houser, who also taught at the Summer Institute."

The painting depicts Tallchief leading a rehearsal of a ballet choreographed by her former husband, George Balanchine. By hiring exceptional faculty, such as Tallchief, its first year, the Arts Institute set a high standard that would become a hallmark of the program." The Future Visit to Rainy Mountain "In this work, Larsen pays tribute to creative writing and theater by commemorating a visit to nearby Rainy Mountain during the Summer Arts Institute. The painting depicts acting instructors Jane Alexander and Ed Sherin, along with other faculty, staff and students, listening intently to poetry instructor N. Scott Momaday. A Pulitzer Prize winning Kiowa-Cherokee writer, Momaday wrote The Way to Rainy Mountain (1976), which details the history of the Kiowas, beginning in their ancestral Montana home and ending with their Great Plains resettlement near Rainy Mountain, located just east of Quartz Mountain."
