Mark your calendars for this LARGE sports auction!

See our website: for online bidding on select items: mastersonbrabanderauctions.com

Our consignor, of most of the autographed items in this auction, has written down a partial history of his collecting experiences, the people he met along the way and the relationships he formed. We thought you might enjoy reading his exact words, lengthy but worth the read:

I met Mark Ross on or around mid-2001. I stopped by his store located at 2664 Brodhead Rd., Aliquippa, PA 15001. Mark had a “brick and mortar” store at that place where he and his father “Butch” Ross, the other co-owner, would be there to talk about sports memorabilia, the latest information about signings coming up and updates of who was going to win the Superbowl.

Around the same time, I purchased signed sports memorabilia that had certificates of authenticity from PSA, JSA, Tristar, Mounted Memories, Ross Sports Ltd., and others. As I became friends with Mark Ross, of Ross Sports, he discussed with me the need to “focus” in a specific area of sports memorabilia. Unfortunately you just can’t buy every athlete that signs an autograph, even if you like them, so I needed to emphasize on a certain group, of what I was going to buy. I decided that I would focus on Football Hall of Famers, to include great football players that I figured would be a “Hall of Famer”.

I began purchasing memorabilia from only legitimate sources to include companies like: SportsMemorabilia.com; Mounted Memories; Ross Sports, and Steiner Sports; I also went to locations that had many athletes “on site” that were signing autographs, such as companies like: Main Line Autographs, Ross Sports, Football Hall of Fame, and the Sports Collector Showcase (Virginia). I found that there were volumes of autographs “out there” and although I didn’t stick just to my “Football Hall of Famers”, I was pretty focused on what I originally planned on buying. I purchased footballs, mini-helmets, full size helmets, photographs and 4” X 6” cards that were known as Goal Line Art Cards as well as Ron Mix Cards. The “unfortunate” point was that I ran out of room. I zealously attempted to purchase the following for each of the “now” 318 (as of 2018 class) Hall of Famers: Printed off biography of each Hall of Famer, Photograph (8X10) signed if the Hall of Famer is alive of each (framed or in Binder), 4” x 6” GLAC and/or Ron Mix Card for each Hall of Famer, 2” x 3” Playing Card for each Hall of Famer, Football signed by each Hall of Famer (can be on the induction ball where all inductees sign, individual signature on ball or group signature on ball), Mini-Helmet of each Hall of Famer, Full size Helmet of each Hall of Famer (preferably Hall of Fame helmet)

I had started with great enthusiasm but by 2014 our home looked like red-neck version of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I realized that I had to focus even more, so I decided I needed to slow down and figure out what to do. In 2018 we decided to keep the Binders with the biography, unframed 8X10”, 4” x 6” and 2” x 3” cards which are far from complete, and the Hall of Fame Inductee footballs. The rest had to go.

Almost 18 years of collecting was going to be auctioned off. Some of the great memories I have, will be just that memories. I have personally met, talked to, and got autographs of some of the greatest athletes that ever played football.

While working with Mark Ross, I had the opportunity to meet and get autographs of active and retired (Hall of Famers) as well as many current and former Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Ross set up signings with 2 time Stanley Cup winner Phil Bourque, which I had the opportunity to have dinner with and attend a signing with him. Mark Ross helped set up the annual Mike Ditka Celebrity Golf Classic for Kids. Although I didn’t play, this was another huge memory, while I lived in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.

Mark coordinated with the Robert Morris University annually which had a sport show with a multitude of Professional Athletes retired and active for autographs. I went several years to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and paid to get autographs from the inductees and others that had came to the Hall to give autographs. When this occurred, Mr. Ross was with me when the autographs were obtained and provided Certificates of Authenticity, as he personally observed the autographs being acquired. Several years Mark subcontracted to Mounted Memories who was contracted with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to get autographs of Hall of Famers. Mark was in charge of getting autographs of all items that were sent in to be signed from people throughout the United States called “Mail-Orders” for the Hall of Famers to sign.

I assisted Mark in having the Hall of Famers sign the Mail Order items while at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, during the annual induction festival. Many of the Hall of Famers would come to the table that had all of Mail Order items set up and would sign them. As I wanted items to be signed, Mark would allow my items to be signed with the Mail Order and provide me a Ross Sports Certificate of Authenticity.

In June of 2008, Mark ran a camp in Hopewell Township in Pennsylvania where Chris Hoke of the Steelers co-sponsored the camp with Mr. Ross. Helping out were a handful of current Steelers and ex-Steelers, to include quarterback Charlie Batch, and former Steelers Mike Wagner, Louis Lipps and Jeff Hartings.

On: https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2017/08/23/freedoms-cody-ross-living-familys-football-legacy/ it tells us how Cody Ross, the son of Mark Ross is now an all-star:

Football is a legacy passed down from generation to generation. Fathers teach their sons who then share the game with their sons. For the Ross Family, football has been more than just a game, it is life. It began with the patriarch of the family Butch Ross. A Beaver County football legend, Butch, who passed away in 2008, began his coaching career in the early 60’s and was the head coach at Hopewell by the end of the decade. During his tenure, one of his most memorable accomplishments was converting an undersized defensive back to running back in the summer of 1971. Five years later, that player would go on to win the Heisman trophy. That player was Tony Dorsett.

Like his father, Mark Ross entered the family business of football after playing and graduating from Geneva College. Though he would play under his father at Geneva, Mark did not get a chance play for his Hall of Fame father in high school because he went to neighboring Quigley. Butch may have missed out coaching Mark in high school, but the son isn’t missing out on coaching the grandson, Cody.”

Mark Ross is an assistant Coach for Cody’s High School Football Team, and continues to be involved in the Sports Memorabilia arena. Mark deals now mostly with sports cards and helping people find items they want on-line rather than have a brick and mortar store.
