It is an honor to offer for sale at public auction this real estate which has played a valuable role in the settlement and development of Vigo County and early growth of Terre Haute.  The amazing historical Markle House at Old Mill Dam on Otter Creek was built in 1848 by the son of Abraham Markle, an early settler who arrived with his family in 1815.

For 170 years this beautiful mansion has graced the 6.5 park-like acres on which it rests.  The two story Greek Revival house with Italianate influences has painted brick exterior, a one story porch extending across the main entrance and two windows, and Doric order columns supporting a decorated frieze divided by double brackets.  Windows have six over six lights.  There are eight fireplaces and all woodwork is original.   Downstairs has a central hall and six rooms which include a double parlor with working gas logs in the fireplaces.  There are five rooms on the second floor, including a large 18 x 36 foot dormitory originally used to house mill employees and travelers.  There are two bathrooms, one downstairs and one up, and a full 6 room basement with all brick floors.  The interior walls are 3 bricks in thickness. The roof is 2 years old and the chimney in the dining room is protected with a poured liner.  The well pump is also 2 years old and there is a septic and finger system.

This is a rare opportunity to own a lovely home, post and beam garage with lean-to and concrete floors, and all on 6.5 acres which has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Interested persons will appreciate that the property will be ever protected by a Deed of Historical Preservation and Conservation Easement in agreement with Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, Inc.
