Lot 523.         Early Benjamin Lamb Tiger Maple Tall Case Clock; 18th Century, 96.5” height, bonnet 16.75” wide and 10.75” depth, outstanding American tiger maple case with dramatic grain, has original bracket feet, outstanding original moldings, dovetailed top gallery with two capped urn finials, brass movement and dial is marked Benj. Lamb London, has Roman numerals flanked by Fleur de Lis with outer perimeter having minute numbers, clock has original pendulum and weights, backboard is all original and unaltered with original hand-forged T nails, original brass hardware and hinges, interior of clock has two handwritten paper pages glued in back, The first page at the top reads as follows: Winding up the clock. Pull up the back chain with the left hand until the weight is high enough to put the hand under and lift by pulling down the other back chain with the right hand just hard enough to keep the chain tight or but little more until the weight is up, never wind by pulling at the chain only. The second page below it reads as follows: The works of this clock with two others were brought from England in 1709 by James Thornton of Bayberry, Pennsylvania on his return from a religious visit to that country. It was bought by my grandfather John Parry and given to my mother as a part of her marriage outfit and has never yet needed any repairing although it has been kept almost continually running. David Walton Jano. 1868. This clock was recently discovered in a private home in Eastern NC, appears to be complete and all original with the chain being the only replacement of the clock, we encourage all serious early American tall case clock collectors to view this discovery. Provenance: private Eastern NC family. More recent history: Between 1868 and the late 1930s the whereabouts or ownership of the clock are unknown. Dorsey Griffith, an experienced antiques dealer, who at the time operated a shop in Arlington, VA, purchased it in the late 1930s. The clock was a present to his daughter who was born in August, 1937. In 1971 the clock was obtained by the current owner as collateral for a loan given to the former wife of Dorsey Griffith, whom was remarried at the time; Provenance: Private Eastern NC Collection
