This will be an "eclectic" auction, with just under 700 clocks being sold from the Donald & Barbara Mars collection of Olive Bridge, New York & NYC. They collected for 50 years, without selling one, and just kept filling every inch of their home. From Le Coultre to early Grandfather clock, Novelty, Figural, Wall Clocks, Time Clocks, and more. Sold individually and in group lots. Also from same home a selection of furnishings and decorative accessories. The second part will include ephemera, artwork and collectibles. Please keep checking back to website for updated photographs, catalog and updates.

An eclectic group of 700 clocks from the collection of Donald and Barbara Mars will be offered for sale at JMW Auctions, Kingston, NY, June 23, 2018. The couple, who lived in Olivebridge, NY, began collecting clocks over 50 years ago when they purchased their first time piece, a mantle clock, which they placed over the fireplace of their apartment in the El Dorado on New York’s Central Park West. From that moment on Mrs. Mars in particular was captivated by clocks of all kinds.

Assisted by an antique dealer and advisor from Long Island, Dr. and Mrs. Mars assembled a group of hundreds of clocks, “everything from Le Coultre to early grandfather clocks,” according to Jay Werbalowsky, owner of JMW Auctions. The collection of novelty, figural, wall, time clocks and more will be sold individually and in group lots, along with other furnishing and decorative accessories from the same home, Werbalowsky explained. He added that the couple has never sold a single clock from their diverse collection.

The couple’s son, Nathanial, recalls the remarkable experience of hearing hundreds of clocks chiming and ticking in unison when they were periodically wound. “My friends and I would also have fun with the clocks when I was in high school,” Nathanial quipped. “Once we set all the clocks in the study and library to exactly 4:20.” referencing the code name for “marijuana”.

Nathanial also remembers his father building an addition to their Olivebridge home with yards and yards of shelving to accommodate the clock collection, as well as the thousands of books accumulated by his mother who was an avid reader….to say the least.  Her vast collection of novels and biographies will be donated to the Kingston Salvation Army, while Dr. Mars, a psychoanalyst, will donate his extensive professional library to a psychiatric institution in Harlem.

Highlights from the Mars collection include large figural Ansonia mantel clocks, selection of early wall clocks, and a nice selection of quality smaller clocks including Tiffany, LeCoultre among others.

This is not the first large clock collection Werbalowsky has handled, according to Woodstock art dealer James Cox who recommended JMW auction to Dr. and Mrs. Mars. In 2017 JMW Auctions conducted a highly successful sale of inventory from the venerable Kingston Clock Shop. “Jay was obviously a perfect venue for this highly diverse collection,” according to Cox.

The sale will begin promptly at 10 a.m., June 23 at the JMW showrooms, 612 Washington Avenue, Kingston, NY. A preview will be underway Friday, June 22 from noon to 8 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. the day of the sale.
