#48, 1954, KURTIS KRAFT SUMAR STREAMLINER REPLICA
COLOR BLUE/WHITE. KURTIS KRAFT BUILT THIS REPLICA OF THE ORIGINAL FOR DON SMITH. CHAPMAN S. ROOT COMMISSIONED FRANK KURTIS OF CALIFORNIA TO BUILD THE ORIGINAL KURTIS KRAFT STREAMLINER. THE CAR HAD A 270 C.I. OFFY ENGINE, CAPABLE OF 330 HP @ 5,000 RPM. JIMMY DAYWALT, MARSHALL TEAGUE, ELMER GEORGE, TONY BETTENHAUSEN, SAM HANKS, AND BOB SWEIKERT WERE DRIVERS OF THIS CAR. JIMMY DAYWALT DROVE THE STREAMLINER TO A 9TH-PLACE FINISH IN THE 1955 INDY 500. IN 1959, AT THE NEW DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, MARSHALL TEAGUE HAD THE STREAMLINER UP TO 171 MPH, WHICH WAS THE DAYTONA RECORD AT THE TIME. TEAGUE THOUGHT HE COULD EASILY DO 180, AND SURPASS TONY BETTENHAUSEN’S SPEED RECORD OF 177 MPH, SET AT THE MONZA TRACK IN 1958. HE TOLD CHIEF MECHANIC, JOHN H. BLOUCH, HE WANTED TO GO OUT AGAIN. CHASSEY HELD TRACK RECORDS AT ALL FOUR OF THE HIGH-BANKED ASPHALT TRACKS IN THE MIDWEST. THE SECRET OF THIS CARS SUCCESS WAS TWO-FOLD: CHASSEY WASN’T AFRAID TO RUN WHEEL TO WHEEL ON THE HIGH BANKS. COLOR ORANGE/WHITE. RONNIE WARD BUILT THE FRAME AND COMPLETED THE CAR. SMITH’S SPEED SHOP IS LOCATED IN EASTON, OHIO. CAR WAS COMPLETED IN THE WINTER OF 1968, AND WON 8 USAC RACES ON ITS WAY TO WINNING THE CONSTRUCTION CHAMPIONSHIP THAT YEAR. LARRY DICKSON DROVE THE CAR FOR HALF OF THAT SEASON. SEVERAL WELL-KNOWN DRIVERS ALSO DROVE THE CAR, INCLUDING JOHNNY PARSONS, CHUCK BOOTH, BRUCE WALKUP AND TOM BIGELOW. LEE KNUZMAN WAS NEARLY KILLED IN THE CAR.
