14 - Furniture Mid Century Knoll Saarinen Side Table Mid Century Knoll Saarinen Tulip Side Table. Features a laminated top touted as an ‘exceptionally durable plastic surface’ that is highly resistant to most chemicals & extensive wear. Base is constructed from molded cast aluminum polished and coated in tough, abrasion-resistant white rilsan finish. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world," explained Saarinen. "I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." In his pedestal collection, which includes a dining, coffee and side table, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award. From the internet: Hans Knoll, the son of a pioneer German furniture manufacturer, founded the Knoll company in New York City in 1938, one year after immigrating from Germany. He hired Florence Schust, a Cranbrook graduate who had worked for Gropius and Breuer, and the two were married in 1946. Knoll would triumph thanks to impressive international contacts, gaining exclusive rights to the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and producing them to their original specifications. 32 - Firearm McLain Percussion Blackpowder Target Rifle Firearm Percussion Blackpowder Rifle “The lock is marked "JOSEPH GOLCHER." He comes from a long line of gun lock makers that started in England and were made primarily for the American export market. Joseph was born after the family came to the US and settled in Philadelphia. He made gun locks there in the mid-19th century and his locks were sold throughout the country (though mainly in the East and Midwest) to other gunsmiths to put on completed rifles. The top of the barrel is marked in script "G. W. McLain." Mr. McLain was a gunsmith in Mount Tabor, Indiana, between 1879 and 1885. He was known for making single-shot, double-set trigger target rifles. He likely did not make the barrel. That maker's information - if it is marked at all - would be located on the underside of the barrel. All of this combines for me to tell you that the gun in question is a target rifle made by McLain between 1879-85 in Indiana, utilizing a widely available, quality-constructed percussion lock from the mid-19th century made by Golcher of Pennsylvania.” Logan Metesh of High Caliber History LLC Possibly a 32 caliber. He was part of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique", led by Jan van Beers. This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (1852–1908) and Alexander Struys (1852–1941). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behavior, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes. This controversial artist once had his work “Temple of Human Passions” criticized by L’Art Moderne “as a pile of naked and contorted bodies, muscled wrestlers in delirium, an absolute and incomparable childish concept. It is at once chaotic and vague, bloated and pretentious, pompous and empty. And what if, instead of paying for 300,000 francs of “passions”, the government simply bought works of art?” In excellent condition. 151 - Antique African Wood Chiwara Antelope Dance Crest Provenance from the consigner: These pieces all come from the retired antique dealer and African art collector, Morri Hart. He was the manager for the "Ye' Ole Curiosity Shop" on the Seattle waterfront for about 40 years. He had one of the largest African art collections in the world, but has been selling many of his pieces for the last 6-8 years. Please see lots 151, 232, 334 and 356 for more African wood carvings from this collection. This is a African wood carving Bambara Mali Headdress Chiwara Dance Crest. In the form of a stylised hippotragina (horse antelope). This was used in ritualistic ceremonies by Bambara farmers in the savanna of Mali. Before the seed-sowing season a ritual takes place that would involve two young men who dance with these type of crests, known as Chiwara. The wood figures would consist of one female antelope dance crest and one male that are attached to plaited caps worn by the dancers. The aim of the ritual is to increase and secure fertility. This antelope crest shows the ‘classical’, high and vertical type of a ‘Chiwara’. With high towering horns, long ears and with the heavy mane of a male hippotragina (horse antelope). This ‘Chiwara’ dance crest is carved from very hard, heavy wood and colored dark brown. Both tall horns of the male horse antelope and tail are carved in fine spirals tipped with stitched hide and tufts of antelope hair, the ears carved in cross-hatching. The long, narrow head terminates below in a small, pointed muzzle. The equally long and narrow face, nose and body has applied cowry shells. The neck and mane of the antelope male are represented in three elegantly curved, openwork bands with struts and triangles. The stylized mane rests on the outer band. Important surfaces of the antelope crest, such as the forehead, neck, mane and legs, are decorated with fine chip-carving relief with lines and small, dotted triangles. This ‘Chiwara antelope’ has a very good, brown-black patina as a result of protracted use, as well as minor age damage: a break at the tip of muzzle, a fracture on the top crest of the mane. Measures 44” tall by 13.75” wide and 3.75” at the deepest point at the base. Reference Lit.: ‘Bamana. Afrikanische Kunst aus Mali’ by Jean-Paul Colleyn, Rietberg Museum Zurich, fig. 187, 188, 190, 192; 'Bamana' by J.-P. 182 - Furniture Mid Century Knoll Saarinen Side Table Mid Century Knoll Saarinen Tulip Side Table. The next year, they opened a textiles division and showroom that was flanked with some of the world’s leading designers. Knoll would triumph thanks to impressive international contacts, gaining exclusive rights to the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and producing them to their original specifications. This included the 1929 Barcelona Chair. They also commissioned Eero Saarinen to design the now iconic Tulip chair, and hold the rights to Marcel Breuer’s seminal Wassily Chair. 338 - Mid Century Knoll Saarinen Swivel Arm Chair Mid Century Knoll Saarinen Swivel Tulip Arm Chair designed in 1955/56 by Eero Saarinen. The chair features an upper shell of molded fiberglass, with a reinforced, plastic bonded finish. The brown upholstered foam cushion is removable with Velcro fastening. 383 - Fantastic Antique Rococo Revival Tea Service Fantastic Antique Rococo Revival Tea Service for 12 Fantastic antique Rococo Revival tea service for 12. This 43 piece tea service has an interesting history, some of which may or may not be true. There are several documents surrounding this service that implies that this service was commissioned by Napoleon as a gift to Czar Alexander I of Russia. The story goes that Napoleon gifted this set as a belated wedding present to the Czar at the Conference of Tilsit in 1807. It was then given to Prince Georgy Yevgenyevich Lvov to remove from Russia during the revolution. Prince Georgy Yevgenyevich Lvov was later reported to sell the set to support himself. According to the many documents that accompany this set, there is some doubt to the tale. Several different museums have looked at this set and stated the belief that Napoleon would not have commissioned a set in this Rococo Revival style but would have chosen the Empire style of which he was fond of. There also seems to be a consensus that this set is post 1830. It is a gorgeous tea set in a rare turquoise blue. With a different hand painted scene on each piece and decorated with 24kt gold, this set was most likely commissioned as a special order set. On the bottom of several pieces has been impressed LB 310 12. The 12 most likely refers to the number of place settings. It is suggested that due to being a special order, the L.B. could be L. Bernardaud, the designer. This set contains: 12 - Tea cups, one cup has a hairline crack in the interior of the cup, all others in excellent condition. No marks. From the internet: Born in Germany and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Ernest Koken was a creative and industrious young man. Following his father's untimely death, young Ernest left school and set about earning a living for his family. He found success first as an artist and manufacturer, creating hand-decorated fine china shaving mugs, mirrors, razors, strops, clippers and other supplies and selling them to local barber shops. Soon, his thoughts turned to his greatest passion: engineering. Ernest began creating prototype designs in his spare time, eventually devising a clever reclining chair that was more comfortable and convenient for barber and customer alike. His biggest breakthroughs, however, still lay ahead. Armed with a patent for his innovative reclining chair and funded by increasing demand for his design, Koken was motivated to continue refining and improving the barber chair. In 1900, he struck upon what would prove to be his greatest idea: a hydraulically-operated chair fitted with a joystick-style lever that allowed barbers to quickly and easily control all of the chair's movements. Koken also patented these innovations and combined them to create the Koken Hydraulic Barber Chair, which quickly became a runaway success with barber shops across the United States and beyond. Ernest Koken was inducted into the Barber Hall of Fame in 1975, and his initial designs and patents still form the basis of many barber chairs produced to this day. 398 - Eames Molded Plywood Chair by Henry Miller Eames molded plywood chair by Henry Miller. Painted red from its original natural color. The original sticker on the bottom of the chair is intact. Chair is in excellent condition. From the internet: Designers Charles and Ray Eames established their long and legendary relationship with Herman Miller in 1946 with the boldly original molded plywood dining and lounge chairs. Designed to comfortably fit the body, the sculpted form of the molded plywood chairs are produced using thin sheets of lightweight veneer gently molded into curved shapes with natural rubber shock mounts to absorb movement. Since then, the chairs' aesthetic integrity, enduring charm, and comfort have earned it recognition as the best of modern design. In the early 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames experimented with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the U.S. Navy in 1942 to develop plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells molded under heat and pressure. After World War II, they adapted the technology to create high-quality chairs that could be mass-produced. The process eliminated extraneous wood, which reduced the weight and visual profile of the chair and established a basis for modern furniture design. A truly comfortable chair that's suitable for businesses and homes. The chair is in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Time magazine named it the Best Design of the 20th Century. Tag Words: Wooden Carvings, Religious Figures, Sculpture, Folk Art, Statue ZB10904 JJ
