Will Larrymore Smedley kept his exceptional light under wraps.  Mystery writer and Chautauqua institution neighbor, R. Jere Black, wrote in the July 21,1943, edition of the Chautauqua daily, i have never known a man who so hates praise, or even a just recognition of his genius"  and another article, appearing in the daily on July 23,1959, after Smedley's death, stated, it is hard to believe that in this century of the dramatic and in this age of publicity that a nationally known master craftsman and artistic genius could have maintained his home so quietly for over fifty years so near to our busy plaza.

Born in Sandyville, Oh, on November 10, 1871, Smedley graduated from the Case school of applied science in 1896.  he became a professional artists and opened a studio in Cleveland and later New York city.  In 1906, will was hired to teach life class and plein-aire sketching at the Los Angeles school of art and design.  his tenure there was very brief.  as black wrote in the July 21,1937 daily, "...after one day she shook the job and shot back to his beloved Chautauqua-the swiftest coast-to coast round trip on record."  Smedley would permanently reside at Chautauqua with his wife, Adelaide, from about until his death on Sept. 18,1957.  as a renaissance man, Smedley was a painter, print maker, illustrator, craftsman, lecturer, writer, and teacher.  Daily reporting adds pianist, composer, poet, furniture and clock maker.  Most importantly he was a naturalist.  he crated over 400 drawings for L.H. Bailey's Cyclopedia of Horticulture.  In the summer months, he recorded" ...on canvas the natural beauties of Chautauqua and the surrounding countryside."  Willl Larrymore Smedley's photography and artwork was filled with passion for the natural world.
His first exhibit at Chautauqua took place at the annual Chautauqua art league exhibition on August 15,1935.  Two of his paintings, "blue green nocturnes." a picture of moonlight on Chautauqua Lake, and Autumn beeches" were featured.  A second Western New York exhibit would not occur until august 12,1974 at the Patterson Westfield.  This one not only featured his first national academy painting, "Forest Idyll" but also displayed his scrapbook of drawings and designs for his sketches of jewelry, furniture and paintings creations.
Smedley's third and last local exhibit took place on August 12,2002.  the Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts showcased the collection of Chautauqua Mary Ellen Sheridan.  "The nature he paintings in Chautauqua County is most dramatic"., said Anthony Bannon, Director of the George Eastman House in Rochester. "the are big statements for large paintings, and in them autumn in his season and sunset his hour."
Smedley maintained memberships in the Society of Artists and illustrators, the Cleveland society of Artists and the national Craftsman.  he exhibited at the American Miniature Painters Society, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The american watercolor society and the Albright Art Gallery.  He is also listed in the Smithsonian Institute's Library of Artists.
