oil on canvas, signed lower left "(faint W.) L. Sonntag," romantic landscape with grand forested cliffs rising from a secluded lake, a single fisherman along the edge, all beneath a clear sky, warm autumnal colors brighten the detailed trees in the lower right corner of the composition, verso of canvas bears Theodore Kelley canvas stamp listing his address as 172 (Cre?) St. NY), unframed; William Sonntag is counted among the great Hudson River School painters. Born in East Liberty, Pennsylvania, he moved to Cincinnati in the 1840s to pursue a career in art. After earning an important commission from the B&O Railroad, Sonntag returned to the east coast, eventually settling in New York City. Fully inducted into the National Academy of Design in 1861, Sonntag continued to enjoy success painting landscapes in the Adirondacks, the Shenandoah Valley, and the White Mountains. - 13"h x 17"w - This work is a recent discovery from Western, NC in ntouched, as found, estate condition. Several pinholes and two tears, scattered paint flaking (particularly along edges where canvas is wrapped around the stretchers).
