Item Description
Beloit, Wis. - The buyer, here from Austin, TX to visit relatives, bought the painting for $53,000 plus the standard 10% buyer's fee. Beloit Auction received the painting on consignment from the living estate of noted Wisconsin architect Lynn Anderson. Anderson was a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. The painting is accomplished in the drip style of the prolific Abstract Expressionist Pollock. It measures approx.7 1/2"” x 24”. On its backing is written, "Bought in NY 1959 or 60 LA Jackson Pollock" It’s believed that the initials LA stand for Lynn Anderson who visited New York during the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. Pollock himself died in 1956. The painting does not carry the signature of Jackson Pollock. He was not known to have signed all his work. Richard Ranft, President of Beloit Auction, consulted with museum curators and arts appraisers about the painting’s authenticity. Anderson is incapacitated and family members cannot offer any further information on the painting’s provenance. Eleven phone bidders plus the TX man who attended the Auction in person vied for the painting. The successful bidder is an artist himself and a longtime admirer of Pollock's. The second bidder, a woman from Florida, was on the phone with one of the Auction house workers. Area newspaper and TV reporters as well as a reporter from Associated Press covered the excitement.
