Item Description
Belhorn Auctions - SOLD $13,000 + BP. One-of-a-kind McCoy panther figural design by Sidney Cope (1882-1961). While marked McCoy, this piece is completely handmade and was not put into production by the Pottery. More than a piece of McCoy, this is an amazing sculptural work by Sidney Cope. Being a unique, handmade piece, it is naturally the the only one known to exist and was purchased from the Cope Gallery. This is museum quality in all ways - the life-like characteristics, the crisp detail and wonderful mix of matte and gloss glazes. The bold lines and form are true representations of the modern movement in art pottery and ceramics in the mid-1900s. There are a few flakes along the edge of the base and three small nicks to the edge of one leaf. For the sake of accuracy, there are some unobtrusive firing lines to the panther, the result of the thick, heavy clay used to construct the piece. 9 1/2" tall by 12 1/2" tall.
