Important NC Pottery Webster School Two Gallon Storage Jar,this seldom seen double handled form is inscribed w/a wonderfully detailed bird perched on a flowering bough, the bird w/a "collar" and heart shaped wing, in addition, this salt glazed stoneware vessel is marked "2" above wavy line decoration at the shoulder and inscribed "leafy" decoration around one handle attachment, several kiln drips, area around one handle void of salt glaze, 14.5"h; Provenance: Webster School pottery jar recieved from Rosemary Kelly Thomas, a direct descendant of John Bethane Kelly. Rosemary inherited the jar from Mae and Bill Tyson who are descendents of the Tyson family. The Kelly's and the Tyson's are two of the oldest families in Moore County, NC and among the earliest settlers. Both families rose to prominence in the early 19th c. (Note: Tyson family were Quakers). The Tyson family property is in the region of the John C. Campbell kiln site in Moore Co., NC. John Campbell ran a country store and the Websters, as well as the Cravens and Hancocks, fired their wares in the kiln. Direct family lineage will be available. Est. 15000-25000
