Outstanding Six-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Water Cooler with Pedestal Base, Stamped “J. HAMILTON / BEAVER,” Pennsylvania origin, circa 1850, highly ovoid cooler with incised banding, lug handles, and squared bung hole with notched corners, attached to a flaring pedestal base. Decorated with a bold cobalt fuschia vine design sweeping across the front. Handle terminals, corners of bung hole, and opening of bung hole, all brushed with cobalt. The maker’s mark of brothers James and William Leet Hamilton impressed below the rim, along with a six-gallon capacity mark. Impressive size, beautiful decoration, and desirable form. A fine example of early Western Pennsylvania stoneware. Large chip above one handle. A few small chips on inner bottom edge of base. H 17”.
