Item Description
1828, worked on linen in wool embroidery floss in a variety of stitches including cross, satin stitch and Algerian eye stitch in shades of blue, yellow, and cream. Bands of upper and lower case alphabets and numerals are separated by decorative rows of stitching. Bottom register with verse, "O Frenship, Frenship dearest name / many pretend thee to claim / But alas there are but a few / who in reality are true...," above verse is inscribed "Louisa E. Gash was born Nov. 19th 1818." All enclosed within undulating strawberry border. This sampler is a very exciting and important historical document as it has great similarity to the Harriet Elizabeth Alexander sampler, see "May We All Remember Well", Volume I, A Journal of History and Cultures of Western NC," edited by Robert S. Brunk., p. 156. The borders, stitches, pattern and style are very closely related and although their verses are different, they have the same placement and length. This suggests that Louisa may have attended Newton Academy, as Alexander did, and perhaps both girls received their needlework instruction at this school from the same teacher. Louisa's mother is buried in Newton Academy Cemetery next to the school. Housed in narrow walnut frame. With minor staining. Louisa Elizabeth Gash was born Nov. 19, 1818, in Swannanoa, Buncombe Co., NC and was the eighth child of John Gash (1769-1857), and Nancy Gudger (1777-1851). Family research shows that John Gash's father, Martin Alley Gash, (b. 1732) entered deeds to property on the Swannanoa from a Burke County, NC Land Grant in 1792. On Oct. 20, 1844, Louisa Gash married John Erwin (b. 1806), also of Buncombe Co. SS 17" x 16"; DOA 18" x 17"
