Item Description
Elliott Daingerfield (NC/NY, 1859-1932), Venice, oil on canvas, signed lower left "Elliott Daingerfield," sweeping view of the Grand Canal in Venice under the watchful full moon, the dome of Santa Maria della Salute hovering above the city, housed in the original gilt wood frame with elaborate applied composition ornament; Elliott Daingerfield was born in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, but was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In 1880 his artistic talents led him to New York City, where, after rejection from the Academy of Design, he gained acceptance at the studio of Walter Satterlee. The first of many triumphs was the inclusion of Daingerfield's painting at the National Academy of Design. His art career continued to flourish in New York while maintaining ties to North Carolina. He was particularly fond of the mountains and kept a summer studio in Blowing Rock, NC. It was in this idyllic spot that Daingerfield and the Cannons forged a strong bond, one that continued up until his death in 1932. - In a letter penned by Daingerfield and addressed to Ruth Cannon he describes "'The Venice by Moonlight' scenes my finest thing..." - SS: 23.5" x 33.25"; DOA: 34" x 44" - Provenance: Charles & Ruth Cannon (acquired directly from the artist). Exhibited: New York City, NY, Grand Central Art Galleries, Memorial Exhibition: Paintings, Water Colors, and Drawings by Elliott Daingerfield, 1934, no. 5.
