This auction features lots of Fine Art Pottery as follows: - Many Pieces by Teruo Hara. World reknown, winner of the grand prize for ceramics at the Brussels World's Fair. He taught at the Corcoran in the 1960 and at one time was considered by many the finest maker or eastern pottery in the world. He exhibited in every major city and lived in Warrenton, VA at the time of his death. - We have many Mingei pieces of pottery in this auction.. - We also have a piece by Robert Arneson who is considered the father of the folk pottery style. - Many pottery pieces by Cliff Lee "CLIFF LEE'S VESSELS ARE AMONG THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF AMERICAN ARTISTS WORKING IN PORCELAIN TODAY." ~ MICHAEL MONROE, SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM RENWICK GALLERY. CLIFF LEE CAME INTO PROMINENCE IN 1993 WHEN HE WAS INVITED TO CONTRIBUTE A PIECE OF HIS WORK TO THE WHITE HOUSE COLLECTION OF AMERICAN CRAFTS. TWO YEARS LATER HIS WORK WAS IN THE PERMANENT COLLECTION OF THE SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM’S RENWICK GALLERY. LEE'S “PRICKLY MELONS” WITH IMPERIAL YELLOW GLAZE CAUGHT THE EYE OF THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, WHICH ACQUIRED A PAIR FOR ITS PERMANENT COLLECTION - A RARE DISTINCTION FOR A LIVING ARTIST. IT TOOK CLIFF LEE 17 YEARS TO RECREATE THE FORMULA FOR THE IMPERIAL YELLOW GLAZE OF THE 15TH-CENTURY MING COURT. THE GLAZE IS ONE OF HIS BIGGEST DISCOVERIES. BLENDING TECHNICAL PRECISION AND ARTISTIC VISION, LEE'S ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES REFLECT HIS DEDICATION TO A PURIST AESTHETIC. CLIFF LEE'S WORK "EMBODIES THE SPIRITUAL AND TACTILE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OBJECT. HE IS ADDRESSING THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIUM AND MAKING SOMETHING FRESH.” ~ NICHOLAS BELL, SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN MUSEUM RENWICK GALLERY - Pieces by Rob Barnard.Rob Barnard was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1949. He began studying pottery at the University of Kentucky in 1971 after serving in Vietnam with the United States Marine Corps. In 1974 he was admitted to the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and accepted as a research student at Kyoto University of Fine Arts in Kyoto, Japan where he studied under the late Kazuo Yagi. While in Japan he was accepted in numerous juried exhibitions and had five solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nagoya, Otsu, and Shigaraki. In 1978 he returned to the United States and was awarded a National Endowments for the Arts Fellowship. In 1979 he completed work on a studio and kiln in Timberville, Virginia. He has returned to Japan numerous times since 1978 for solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. From 1987 to 1993, Barnard was the ceramics editor for The New Art Examiner. In 1990 he was awarded a second NEA Fellowship. Besides Japan, Barnard exhibits widely both in the United States and Great Britain. He has work in the collections of the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery and the American Craft Museum, the Everson Museum and the Mint Museum. Barnard has written on the crafts since the early '80s for publications like The Studio Potter, American Craft, Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics—Art & Perception, Keramick and The New Art Examiner. He is currently a lecturer in ceramics at The Catholic University of America in Washington. Fine Textiles and Favrics from all over the world: Hand sewn and hand died fabrics from, Indonesia, Peru, Afghanistan, Ghana and more. Also carpet, rugs and bags.
