89 - Coin 1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollar AU 1925 United States Stone Mountain Commemorative Silver Half Dollar graded by the consignor as Almost Uncirculated. The 1925 Stone Mountain half dollar was struck to help raise funds for the completion of the massive carving honoring Southern Civil War heroes at Stone Mountain, Georgia. The project, which began in 1916, was plagued by numerous interruptions. In fact, it was not until 1970 that the project was actually completed, and that was only after the State of Georgia intervened. However, by the mid 1920’s, with the hope of finishing the project in a timely manner still alive, the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association decided to raise funds for the project via a commemorative coin. With strong support for the project from President Calvin Coolidge, a bill was easily passed on March 17th, 1924 authorizing the minting of up to 5 million half dollars in commemoration of the soldiers of the South. The models for the coin were furnished by Stone Mountain’s original sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who was fired soon after due to many disagreements with the Association. Still, his heavily modified designs were eventually approved on October 10, 1924. Borglum’s obverse features Confederate war heroes Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on horseback. Above them is the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Below to their left is STONE MOUNTAIN and the date, 1925. The reverse features a stoic eagle perched on a rock surrounded by a multitude of text. Above the eagle around the periphery are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. To its left is the inscription MEMORIAL TO THE VALOR OF THE SOLDIER OF THE SOUTH. This is an early 20th century American edition Plate 6 Frohse "viscera of chest and abdomen" human anatomical medical chart. that illustrates detailed depictions of human organs found within the chest and abdomen. Franz Frohse, of the university of Berlin, Germany created a series of anatomical drawings which, because of their accuracy and clarity, were quickly adopted for instruction in this country. Commerce was interrupted at the outbreak of world war I, and these German illustrations, much in demand for medical instruction, were reproduced in the united states by the A.J. Nystrom Co., Chicago. The original Frohse drawings were edited and additional charts, drawn by Max Brodel of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, were added to the series. The American Frohse anatomical charts were copyrighted in 1918 and became the classroom standard. The organization of the abdominal charts was especially useful because of the four successive layers illustrating the underlying organs. The illustration of the male and female pelvis was added in 1922, and the drawing of the endocrine glands, supplemented with photographs taken through a microscope, was added in 1939. Chart measures 62 x 42 inches. Tag Words: Antique, Prints, Vintage, Medical, Science, Art, Illustration, School, Teaching, Classroom ZB9405 TKT

287 - 1922 American Frohse Anatomical Wall Chart Beautiful antique original cotton fabric paper and vinyl margin chromolithographic Anatomical Chart, Max Brodel, copyright in 1922, large size measures 76” x 42.5” and is complete with rollup wood dowels on both ends. This is Plate 10 from the American Frohse Anatomical Wallcharts. Showing 8 illustrated images of viscera of the Male and Female Reproductive System. During World War I these German charts were edited by Max Brodel at John Hopkins and published for the A.J. Nystrom & Co. from Chicago IL. Hence the American Frohse. The chart face is cotton paper, mounted on a fabric background, and has it’s original capped on the top and bottom cap wooden dowels. The chart is in very good condition, with normal age wear you would expect from an antique item of this period. There are no repairs. They are getting hard to find and are highly desirable. This is an early 20th century American edition Plate 10 Frohse "Genitals Male & Female Reproductive Systerm" human anatomical medical chart that illustrates detailed depictions of human organs found within the male an female lower abdomen. The illustration of the male and female pelvis was added in 1922. Chart measures 62 x 42 inches.
