Retail Price: 1,350 USD. & Title: THE ACROPOLIS, LOWER END OF THE VALLEY. - Petra /Lower End of the Valley / Shewing The Acropolis. Edition: Standard Edition (SE), 1842-49 Condition: Very Good. Dimensions: Lithograph Paper Measurement: Approximately 17 inches x 24 inches Dimensions: Image Measurement: Approximately 14 inches x 20 inches Coloring: Original lithographic colors. Description: A fine full folio view of Petra, from the lower end of the valley looking towards the Roman ruins, which stand at the right center of the print, in front of a cliff with earlier rock cut Nabatean constructions. Retail Price: 1,250 USD. David Roberts R. A. (1796 - 1864) was one of the most highly acclaimed landscape artists of the 19th century. He was a Scottish painter born near Edinburgh and a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, England. In 1839, he undertook a journey across the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, Jerusalem and Palestine, along the Lebanese coasts, and to the mysterious Baalbec. All 30 lithographs, Stand Edition (SE), included in this portfolio have passed the following test of authenticity as indicated below: o The image sizes for all editions are identical, as they were all printed from the same lithographic stones - approximately 13" x 20" for full page images and approximately 10" x 13" for half page images. The exact size for each image varies within a maximum of an inch in either dimension from image to image. The full untrimmed page is approximately 17" x 24". o The SE lithographs were printed on a thick and heavy matte paper. They were not originally hand colored and were not trimmed to the image. Instead, a small publisher's mark was printed just below the center of the image. o On SE full folios beneath the publisher's mark, a block font letter title appears not in black print, but rather in the ink color of one of the other tintstones for that print, either a light tan or brown. o SE half folios were treated differently. A black, open-faced title was printed below the half-folio print, followed by text which described that image. On the back of the same page additional text appears describing the next full folio image, so that the pages could be bound, alternating half and full folios, with descriptive text appearing opposite the full folios. The choice was made not to print any text on the back of the full folios, however, so that a blank page would face each half folio. o Roberts' signature appears in varying locations within the lower area of each printed image. A title for the print, and usually the 1838-39 date of the original sketch, are also worked into the lower area of the image. o SE prints have usually been cut from their volumes and show one longer rough or trimmed edge. The other edges are usually, but not always, gilt. These lithographs are published on thick and heavy cardboard in 2 sizes. There are 27 large full size lithographs measuring approximately 24 inches x 17 inches with a blank backing. The remaining 3 half size lithographs measure approximately 17 inches x 14 inches with texts on the reverse side. The image sizes are approximately 13" x 20" for full page images and 10" x 13" for half page images. The exact size for each image varies within a maximum of an inch in either dimension. Each has stamped on the bottom center directly below the lithograph the publisher's name in small type, "London, Published by F. G. Moon 20 Threadneedle St (dated between 1842 -1849). Further below appears in larger type the printed title of the lithograph. Also in the lower left and/or lower right within each lithograph appears the date of the drawing (from February 1839 through May 1839), the signature of David Roberts, and the scene title with occasional scene descriptions. Some lithographs also have a number in the upper right corner indicating the plate #/series #. A few lithographs have worn edges from signs of aging and/or some spotting (foxing) which is the result of the impurities in the paper. Image Condition Key: Excellent (clean/clear); Very Good (light spotting); Good (moderate spotting); Fair (heavy spotting) Cleaning and Preserving Lithographs that are over 100 years old can be accomplished economically by a qualified conservator. This is done effectively by immersion in dilute solutions of chemicals which remove toning, foxing, tidemarks, and most other stains. Other noninvasive methods such as UV light are also available. Spotting (foxing) is one of the easier discolorations to be removed. Prints can be preserved by displaying behind anti-ultraviolet glass and never in direct sunlight. Extreme humidity should be avoided whenever possible.

Dimensions: Lithograph Paper Measurement: Approximately 17 inches x 24 inches Dimensions: Image Measurement: Approximately 14 inches x 20 inches Coloring: Original lithographic colors. Description: A beautiful full folio desert scene of the camp of the Aulad-Said tribe, Roberts' Bedouin escort for his travels through the Sinai. Retail Price: 900 USD. & Title: TYRE FROM THE ISTHMUS – Tsur Ancient Tyre from the Isthmus, April 27th, 1839. Edition: Standard Edition (SE), Published by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1849. Condition: Fair. Dimensions: Lithograph Paper Measurement: Approximately 17 inches x 24 inches Dimensions: Image Measurement: Approximately 14 inches x 20 inches Coloring: Original lithographic colors. Description: A full folio view of the Isthmus on which the main part of the city of Tyre was built at the time of Roberts' visit. Retail Price: 950 USD.
