Using rapid brushstrokes and intense, warm colours, Roberts created a sense of vast space. In figure paintings and still lifes, he used the same loose style, always paying close attention to the relationship of forms... Among Roberts's many national and international exhibitions was the National Gallery of Canada's 1969 retrospective, a rare honour for a living artist. Roberts was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (1956) and the Order of Canada (1969). He held an honorary doctorate from the University of New Brunswick (1960)."

144 - PHILIP CRAIG, "LAVENDER GARDEN", ACRYLIC, 1993 48" X 36" ESTIMATED VALUE: $800-$1200 Philip Craig (1951) PROVENANCE and Biography from Koyman Galleries Philip Craig was born in Ottawa in 1951. He was encouraged in his creative endeavors by his parents from an early age; taking specialized art courses in Ottawa he eventually graduated from Sheridan College of Art and Design in Toronto. Upon his return to Ottawa, Philip was hired by the CBC, as a television graphic designer. It was soon after that he was taken on by his first gallery after he was spurred on by older artists to submit a painting to Visual Art, Ottawa Survey Exhibition #1 in 1975. For the next decade, Philip lived and worked in Newfoundland where his isolation from the art world allowed him to focus on traditional subject matter: landscapes, portraits, and still life. His paintings began to sell in both Ottawa and Newfoundland and with success came a growing demand for his works. By 1986, Philip and his young family returned home and he decided to paint full-time. Philip’s travels, first to England, then France, Italy, Morocco, and India enriched and inspired his works and gave him an appreciation for light. Collectors around the world now seek his paintings. Philip Craig is represented in Ottawa, Ontario by Koyman Galleries and Terence Robert Gallery.

233 - JOE FRANCIS PLASKETT, "FLOWER/MUSIC" 1984, OIL ON CANVAS, 36" X 29" ESTIMATED VALUE: $4000-$4500 BIOGRAPHY FROM THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA: "Joseph Plaskett graduated from the University of British Columbia, and continued his studies at the Vancouver School of Art. Before leaving for Paris in 1951, he traveled to San Francisco, New York, and London, for further studies in painting and drawing. The romance and society of Europe inspired Plaskett to paint. His chosen subjects have always been intimate expressions of everyday life – interiors, still life, and portraits of friends and models. After living in Paris for almost fifty years, Plaskett has moved to the quiet countryside of England, where he continues to paint. Since the 1940's he has had solo and group exhibitions in both public and private galleries. His works are in public art gallery collections from Prince Edward Island to Vancouver Island, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Joseph Plaskett is considered to be one of Canada’s most talented and established painters. In the spring of 2001, he was awarded The Order of Canada for excellence in the field of visual art. Most recently, the Plaskett Foundation was launched in 2004 to aid and support Canadian visual artists."

A dedicated painter of light, he was born in Lachine, Quebec in 1964. Lague has had a fascination with drawing since childhood, a skill he practices constantly, even to this day. Upon graduation from Concordia University in Design, he embarked on a 13-year career in the animation industry, working primarily as a background designer and art director. During this time, despite working full time, Mark began receiving attention for his watercolor paintings through competitions, juried shows, and solo exhibitions. In 2000 Mark switched to oil as his primary medium, and in 2002 made the jump to full-time painter. His style is realist, and he is open to virtually all subject matter. What keeps him excited about painting is his endless quest to simplify and get to the essence of whatever he paints.

247 - PHILIP CRAIG, "IMPROMTU EVENING", FRATELLI'S, 2006 48" X 60" REPLACEMENT VALUE $5000 Philip Craig (1951) Biography from Koyman Galleries Philip Craig was born in Ottawa in 1951.

308 - "ICE PATTERNS, PEGGY'S COVE", C. ANTHONY LAW OIL ON BOARD, 20" X 24" IN MAT ESTIMATED VALUE: $700-$900 BIOGRAPHY FROM THE ART GALLERY OF NOVA SCOTIA: "...Law’s post-war works provide the viewers with Nova Scotian and Canadian landscapes in a vigorous and bold realism, where colour is the primary concern. Influenced by the Group of Seven tradition, his works are a robust and distinctly Canadian approach to landscape painting. Law made several trips to the north while serving with the Royal Canadian Navy and it was in the Arctic that Law found the landscape that spoke to him the most - a raw and primal land that enhanced and heightened his desire for rendering a landscape at its most simple, yet monumental and powerful. Law and his wife, the artist Jane Shaw, settled in Halifax in the 1950s. A vital force in the Nova Scotia art community, Law played an active role in the creation of both the Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. He was Chairman of the AGNS’s Board of Governors from 1977 to 1979 and artist-in-residence at Saint Mary’s University from 1967 to 1980..."

FREDERIC MARLETT BELL-SMITH (1846-1923) WATERCOLOUR ON PAPER, 11.25" X 17.25" BIOGRAPHY FROM THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF CANADA: "Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith was a well-known painter, working in watercolour and oil. He was the first Canadian to be granted a personal sitting by Queen Victoria, resulting in Queen Victoria (1895). Bell-Smith was born in London, England. He trained at the South Kensington School of Art, and with his father John Bell-Smith, a portrait painter. F. M. Bell-Smith immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1867, following his father who had settled there the year prior.  In Montreal, Bell-Smith found work as a photo retoucher. In 1871, he married and relocated to Hamilton, Ontario, where he again worked in a photographer’s studio and as a freelance illustrator. Bell-Smith and his wife would briefly relocate to Toronto, where he taught at the Ontario School of Art, after which they returned to Hamilton. At this time, he exhibited mostly watercolours like Montreal from St. Helen’s Island (1874). After 1877, he also painted in oil. In 1881, Bell-Smith moved to London, Ontario, where he was an art instructor in public schools and at Alma College. From 1887, with free passes from the Canadian Pacific Railway, Bell-Smith painted in the Canadian Rockies. He was awestruck by the mountains and would return to western Canada throughout his remaining years to paint works like Mists and Glaciers of the Selkirks (1911).  Bell-Smith was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1886."

390 - ROSS RHEAUME, "MERCADO", OIL ON CANVAS, 2006 36" X 24" DEPICTION OF THE ORIGINAL OTTAWA TRAIN STATION. ESTIMATED VALUE: $1200-$1800 BIOGRAPHY FROM ROSSRHEAUME.COM: "Canadian Métis artist Ross Rheaume was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan and spent his early years growing up in Canada’s far north. Upon election of his father Gene Rheaume to the House of Commons in 1963, the family moved to Ottawa where Ross spent his teen years before moving to Toronto in 1979 to form the rock band Roman Grey with best friend David Smith. Later years found  Ross travelling the world managing the design of large projects in the Middle East with a two year break  back in Ottawa to design and build Alanis Morissette’s Ottawa condo. Throughout his travels and experiences he continued to paint and sell his artwork, most notably with a commission from the Royal Ontario Museum. After returning to Canada in 2005 Ross decided to more seriously pursue his career as an oil painter, and complete the trio of disciplines of music, art and architecture. In 2008 he cofounded Ottawa Art Expo with Judith Savic, creating an artist run, not for profit corporation to stage the annual event. Subsequent highlights include receiving the ‘Emily Carr’ Legacy Award at 2010 OAEx and having several of his paintings become central to Veterans Affairs commemorative ceremonies. In 2012 Ross joined Galerie Old Chelsea, as an associate, where his work can now been seen on a permanent basis. The years in the North and his father’s stories of his Native ancestry and Lois Riel’s friendship with his great-great grandfather A.G.B Banatyne instilled in  Ross  a profound belief in the power of storytelling; a belief he shares with artist brother Dave Rheaume and recording artist, and niece, Amanda Rheaume.  In 2009 Ross and Dave formed the North Light Artists Group to promote their ideas of storytelling through painting."

447a - "TWO BIRDS" BY KENOJUAK ASHEVAK, 1927-2013 COLORED PENCIL ON PAPER 25"X19" ESTIMATED VALUE: $4000-$4500 BIOGRAPHY FROM THE CANADIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA: "Kenojuak Ashevak is perhaps the best-known Inuit artist because of her famous print The Enchanted Owl (1960), which was featured on a Canada Post stamp. She was also the first woman to become involved with the newly established printmaking shop at Cape Dorset. Kenojuak Ashevak, C.C., O.N., artist (born 3 October 1927 in Ikerrasak camp, South Baffin Island, NWT; died 8 January 2013, Cape Dorset, NU). A Companion of the Order of Canada and winner of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, Ashevak is perhaps the best-known Inuit artist because of her famous print The Enchanted Owl (1960), which was featured on a Canada Post stamp. She was also the first woman to become involved with the newly established printmaking shop at Cape Dorset. The Birth of an Artist Kenojuak Ashevak grew up on the land in the traditional, semi-nomadic hunting lifestyle, living in igloos and skin tents. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, she was hospitalized at Parc Savard Hospital in Québec City from 1952 to 1955. There, she was introduced to Harold Pfeiffer, who taught patients arts and crafts as a way to pass the time and also make extra money — the hospital sold work on behalf of the patients. When she returned to Cape Dorset, Ashevak was encouraged to continue making art by James Houston, who taught the Inuit printmaking techniques and founded the West Baffin Co-operative. Drawings and Prints Ashevak’s work gained almost immediate attention. Her first print, Rabbit Eating Seaweed (1958), for instance, was included in the Cape Dorset Print Collection and Catalogue. Ashevak’s early drawings had simple, bold forms, often featuring birds and creatures metamorphosing into one another. Her iconic The Enchanted Owl (1960), which was used on a postage stamp in the 1970s to commemorate the centennial of the Northwest Territories, has a spotted blue-grey owl gazing out at the viewer, feathers fanning out above its head and curving up from its tail. An untitled etching from 1962 features elongated twin bird-like creatures at the centre of which are a star and human faces. Another etching from 1962 features a spotted creature in the foreground that looks like a seal, its tail rising up into the neck and head of a bird, its head the head of a woman with a forking tongue; behind two apparently dancing birds is a child in a snowsuit with his or her back to the viewer. As Ashevak’s art evolved, it became more complicated and highly stylized, eschewing the directness and clarity of her earlier efforts. In the ink and colour pencil drawing Dog Caribou Spirit with Birds (1988/89) there is a female caribou with a human head and bird feet, a bird streaming out of its sides, and in the elaborate Dog Mother Shaman Transformation (1988/89) there is a dog barking and what appears to be a half man, half spiky dragon bursting out of it. The work of Ashevak’s last years returned to her early simplicity, but this time with vibrant colour. Fine Feathers (2013) is just the body of an owl with orange-tipped feathers fanning out behind, and “Above and Below” (2013) has an aquamarine bird flying above what looks like a blue and green sea creature swimming in the opposite direction. Awards, Exhibits and Other Work Although best known as a graphic artist, she also carved, designed blankets and (with her late husband Johnniebo Ashevak) created a mural for the 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Japan. In 2004, Ashevak designed a stained glass window for the chapel of Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario. The window has an owl gazing out at viewers, feathers fanning out beside it, and an Arctic char swimming beneath, all of it suffused in a deep blue. The window was dedicated to Rt. Rev. Andrew Atagotaaluk, Bishop of the Arctic. The recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Canada (Companion in 1982) and participant in many exhibitions, Ashevak travelled to southern Canada and Europe. She was featured in a National Film Board film in 1963 and in a limited-edition book published in 1981. She became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1974 and was given a 30-year retrospective of her work at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection Gallery (Kleinburg, Ontario) in 1986. In 2002, her work was featured in the exhibition Kenojuak Ashevak: To Make Something Beautiful at the National Gallery of Canada. She was awarded a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2008 and in 2012 was appointed to the Order of Nunavut.

462a - "MACKELLAR GROCERY", WALTER CAMPBELL, 1979 SIGNED GICLEE PRINT, 15.5"X19" BIOGRAPHY FROM ARTOFWALTERCAMPBELL.COM: "With the delicate stroke of a paintbrush, he tells stories through his intricately detailed watercolour originals. Gazing at his images evokes sweet nostalgic memories. His Gingerbread Collection of artwork, lovingly crafted over three decades, is a tribute to families throughout the generations, telling stories of everything from weddings to Christmas parties to skating on the pond. There’s the courting couple cozying under the fur wrap during an evening horse and sleigh ride in Moonlight Ride. A farmer takes in the familiar view from his barn, housing his trusty ‘ol John Deere, in Old Reliable. Little ghosts and goblins come to life in Walter’s collection of whimsical Hallowe’en prints. So many happy newlyweds have been thrilled about receiving Wedding Day, Wedding Ring or California Dreaming as a tribute to their special day. Relive those sunny spring days teeing off in Fairways or warm your heart with Seasons of Love. Other paintings capture memories of maple sugaring, fishing on a misty summer’s morn, the family trip to the general store, kids playing in the pumpkin patch or with the fresh fallen snow. Walter’s painted stories warm the hearts of all generations, weaving memories from our grandparents’ era with modern times. "

Hembling was born on April 29, 1950, from a well established Rumson, New Jersey family. With a long line of creative family members it was no surprise that his interest in art, architecture, and design.   In the early 1970's he went to Lafayette College in Easton PA, and graduated with his degrees in Art History and Literature.  Fresh out of college he moved to Toronto, Canada and began his pursuit of his passion of painting.  Self taught, he traveled the world gaining experience, and recognition for his work as a painter and printmaker.  He studied different styles around the world and found exactly who he was as an artist. Hembling maximizes impressionist textures and warm luminescent colors, fused in oriental and tropical designs.  Much like the early Fauvist, and Tonalist painters, his work represents a new synthesis of traditional and forward thinking modern influences.  His exhibition history includes The Salmagundi Club, NY; The United States Embassy, San Jose, Costa Rica; Club de Colon, Costa Rica; Ta-Nisa Galleries NYC; University of Maine, Franklin County, Maine; and Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey.  While exhibiting in San Jose, Costa Rico, his work was chosen by the Costa Rican Government to represent Costa Rica at the 1979 World Trade Exhibitions in Brussels, Belgium."

482 - SALLY LAIDLAW, "ABSTRACT", OIL ON CANVAS 36" X 32" BIOGRAPHY FROM SALLYLAIDLAW.CA: Westcoast artist Sally Laidlaw creates impressionistic, acrylic paintings on large canvasses. Although most of her paintings conjure up images of the ocean and coastal life, they are only inspired by the atmosphere, not drawn directly from it. Some of Sally's pieces resemble collage and her work is comprised of soft, blended colours, resembling watercolour washes, but they contain accents and bolder areas where a riot of colour occurs. Her paintings often look like landscapes, but those of heart and mind, not created by working on location. Walking through a room of her paintings is like discovering another world of nature's bliss. Sally's works hang in private collections in Canada as well as in France, Mexico, Japan and England
