The house was built in 1810 by Bildad Bradley and owned by prominent Newbury citizens over the years. James A. Garfield slept three nights in the house in 1857 (documentation provided in Garfields dairy). The Union Chapel across the street was built in 1858 and dedicated to free speech. Many suffragettes spoke there including Louisa May Alcott and Susan B. Anthony. A large centennial oak tree was planted in 1876 by the suffragettes on the neighbors property and is beautifully visible from the house with its canopy spanning the north yard.
