Lot 130.       Judaica Sefer Torah Scroll; appears to be over 200 years old; scroll is attached to matching pair of wooden hand held staffs measuring 21 inches, with scroll being 12.5 inches, and appears to include the entire Torah. Each section is 20 inches in length, and is connected with hand woven stitches. The pages appear to be gevil, where the Torah is entirely hand written in quill and ink. This Torah possibly took over a year to complete. Strict rules were to be followed in scribing the Torah, including the position and appearance of the Hebrew alphabet, the number of lines allowed on the page, and the word of God used properly. If any of these mistakes are present, the page is to be removed, hand written again, and stitched back into place. One of the 613 Commandments states that every Jewish male should scribe a Sefer Torah in his lifetime. Accompanying this Torah is the original mantle, which is embroidered with gold weaving depicting Hebrew words and a symbol of the Star of David. Embroidered on the mantle says that it was given in memory of Tzvi Melman. Bachor is depicted before the name, which means teenager or young adult. The bottom lists the Hebrew month and day. This scroll was possibly presented as a memorial gift for a young man. Provenance: Recently Discovered in Private NC Collection

Has beautiful silver inlay highlights throughout. Ark is titled in top center in Hebrew, that translates to “Know before whom you stand.” Upper panel is reticulated with same repeating pattern as marquee, artwork is depicting star of David symbol in center, flanked by two embossed crowns with leaping deer in corners. Below has matching pair of hinged cathedral doors that are fully reticulated, with matching lit Menorahs and Judah Lions standing at base. Matching pair of hand spun solid brass candleholders, with silver inlay flanking seven steps with engraved bricks. Side panels are exquisite, and beautifully inlayed, depicting embossed vase with center stem holding 22 rosebuds. Flowers are embossed, and appear to be silver, gold, bronze and copper. Top of center rosebud has embossed star of David, with fields having matching scroll work throughout, that repeat same pattern on both sides. Interior of Ark shows evidence of shelf bracket. Overall condition appears to be complete and overall original, with removable steps at base and marquee. After close examination, both knobs at door panels have been replaced and re-soldered in the past 50 years. Overall condition is excellent, with very minor scratches, separations of solder, minor staining, and front candlesticks possibly re-polished 100 years ago. Overall in outstanding condition. This Ark has outstanding eye appeal and shows a master of engraving and craftsmanship. Due to the depictions of deer on this ark, and the word Tzvi, which means deer, present on the Torah Scroll Mantle in Lot 130, it is very possible that the Torah scroll and this ark have been together. We encourage all collectors of Judaic art to please send a representative to inspect this item.
